Efficiency Equals Reduction

June 10th, 2007

Imagine that if at the grocery store the person bagging your purchases left empty, unused spaces in each bag causing you to carry 10 instead of 5 bags out to your car then into your home. You would be investing some extra time, energy and space when it was unnecessary. Now transfer that thought to the waste and recycling industry. Instead of filling a trash bag or bin with large empty spaces, we can all do some simple acts to help keep transportation costs down while reducing fossil fuel consumption and saving ourselves some time and money.

The flattening of boxes greatly increases space efficiency in a bin. This does not just apply to cardboard boxes, but also includes any paperboard (cereal or pet food) ones as well. Crushing cans before recycling is much more easily done if it is possible to remove both the top and bottom lids first. Foil products are easily flattened by hand.

Periodically crush your garbage bag down to its true size – you will find that it does not need to be placed on the curb as often. Fewer trips to the dump means less fossil fuel consumed and reduced curbside idling – idling is known to be terribly inefficient and more polluting than vehicles on the move. Garbage collection fees are more easily maintained by the company due to reduced costs per bag, and some companies even offer a discount for those who produce less waste. Also worth noting is that the household will go through fewer plastic garbage bags.

Some kitchen waste disposal units tend to put unnecessary pressure on overtaxed sewage plants. A much better option is to practice composting or vermiculture methods instead. Composting organic waste reduces household trash by approximately 30%. Go one step further by reusing various plastic bags to isolate smelly meat, bones and pet waste. By controlling odors in the garbage, the bag will not have to be put out on the curb as often.

So, imagine that if your waste and recycling was now half the size that it typically was before. That means in theory the waste pickup service would decrease costs by 50%, the landfill would be receiving half of what it used to, fewer trips to the recycling depot, less pollution…

Well you get the picture. It is easy to make a difference and we can all start at home. Right where we are.

Big Brother All Stars: Ratings Ploy?

June 10th, 2007

If you’re a fan of the reality TV show “Big Brother”, you undoubtedly already know that this season is one of the ultimate reality TV ratings boosters : the All Star cast. What does that mean? It means they’re bringing back America’s favorite cast members from seasons past in an effort to draw more existing viewers back, and to create enough buzz to also draw new fans.

Not only that, they’re letting America pick their favorite “characters”, and when I say that, I mean that literally and figuratively, by an online vote. They’ve put 20 past cast members up for the picking, and America gets to vote on their favorite twelve to become the cast for the newest season of Big Brother.

My personal top picks will be three people from the last season, my personal favorite. The first choice is the bitchy byt savvy and cunning Janelle, outrageously goofy Howie the “Jedi Master”, and the dark but cute and witty Kaysar. The three battled it out last season with the “Nerd Herd” who repeatedly stabbed them in the back, but who ultimately ended up ousting the close pack from the house.

BB, as Big Brother is affectionately known, was also smart in their nominations, since they picked the most nominees from the highest rated seasons, virtually guaranteeing those return viewers. So, that leaves one question. Who will America pick, and will the producers at BB add a twist this season?

Some of the previous twists included bringing in “the exes” in the Ex Factor season, where several of the player’s ex boyfriends and girlfriends were brought in to play and to throw the obligatory wrench in the original player’s gameplans, and of course cause more drama and ratings.

Then there was the season of undercover twins playing as one player, with other unbeknownst players having family members they didn’t know they had in the house. Oh, and who could forget last seasons twist where all players came into the game with secret partners who were previously acquainted?

What will the Big Brother twist be this year with the All Star cast, if anything? Will Julie Chen, the host of BB, continue to loosen up and have a good time hosting the show? Will eye candy win over the entertainment factor? This season should be interesting, to say the least, and if you aren’t already a Big Brother fan, you may want to start this season!

Frequently Asked Questions about Avaya Media Servers

June 10th, 2007

What is an Avaya Media Server?

A Media Server forms the backbone of a flexible communications system
for growing companies. It allows your company to take advantage of the increased
functionality of an IP network without replacing your existing infrastructure.

What does a Media Server do?

Media Servers work in conjunction with Media Gateways to provide a
streamlined voice and data network throughout your entire enterprise. Media
Servers and Gateways provide a network built on an industry- standard operating
system that supports distributed IP networking and centralized call processing.

What is the relationship between Media Servers and Media Gateways?

A Media Server works by controlling the Gateway; the Gateway allows branch
offices to connect to the network, and the Server powers the network.

Can Media Servers power more than one Gateway?

Absolutely. The total number depends on the model, but Media Servers can
support several Gateways, expanding with complete ease. In fact, the S8700 can
support up to 8,000 Media Gateways, offering up to 36,000 stations.

Can any Media Gateway work with any Media Server?

The S8300 Media Server only supports the G700 and G350 Media Gateways,
but both the S8500 and S8700 Media Servers support all Gateways. Both the G700
and G350 Media Gateways are compatible with every Media Server.

What are the benefits of installing a Media Server?

The immediate benefits are increased productivity, efficiency, and savings
across the entire enterprise. The branch office has access to the same features and
applications as the central office, and the Media Server consolidates multiple
systems into a single server, enabling you to manage the entire communications
infrastructure from one location.

What size of businesses can use Media Servers?

One of the hallmarks of Avaya Phone Systems products is scalability; Media
Servers can function as a single unit powering a single office, and Media Servers can
support an entire global enterprise.

Know Thine Enemy - Poker Players

June 10th, 2007

KNOW THINE ENEMY; KNOW THYSELF
The more poker you play, the better you will become at identifying certain types of players. Though it’s no guarantee of complete success, once you have an understanding of how a player approaches the game, you will have gained some much-needed knowledge that will help you read their cards and win some pots. While playing, observe your opponents’ style and betting patterns. Things to consider: Do they play slightly recklessly by staying in longer than they should? Are they too conservative and fold immediately if they think they have a bad hand? Do they have the guts to bluff? Keep these things in mind for your own playing as well. It’s good to vary your approach—you don’t want your opponents to get a handle on you.

• The loose poker player stays in round after round with less-than-perfect hands. In many cases, he is hoping that his hand will improve with new cards. Because he rarely folds, the loose player may win some pots, but by staying in too long, he also loses a lot of pots. After all, the word loose looks an awful
lot like lose and loser, doesn’t it?

• The tight casino player plays conservatively and gets out early unless he thinks he can win. Tight players rarely chase cards, and they hold on to their money until the time is right and raise bets when confident. It you adopt this style, be careful—it is wise
to mix it up just a little. By never straying from the “tight” style, other players will fold early when you bet, knowing that you only stay in with a good hand.

• The aggressive player, like the loose player, tends to stay in but is also likely to step up the betting with raises. However, this does not necessarily mean that he or she always has a good hand; the aggressive player may simply enjoy creating some action at the poker table, or he could be bluffing. However, if he does have a good hand, look out— if you stay in, it can cost you some big bucks.

• Passive players are less skilled versions of tight players. They don’t take risks, fold the poker hands early, are reluctant to raise, and rarely, if ever, bluff. These players may not feel fully confident of their poker skills, may have already lost some money, or may have simply not discovered the thrill of what gambling is all about.

Fly Fishing Gifts for Christmas

June 10th, 2007

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year unless you’re having problems coming up with gift ideas. Here are a few fly fishing gift ideas.

Okay, I’ll be the first one to admit publicly that buying gifts for the holidays can be a pain in derriere. When it comes right down to it, how well do you know someone and how do you know what he or she likes? Buying for kids is great because you can always peak at the letter to Santa. Unfortunately, most adults have given up writing to Santa and you really don’t want to read through there other letters. Fortunately, this isn’t a problem if you are buying for a fly fishing enthusiast.

Fly Fishing Gifts

Fly fishing is an extremely popular sport and a good way to become one with nature. Of course, you probably don’t care about any of that. Instead, you want to know what you should buy for guy or gal in your life that loves to go fly fishing. Well, here are a few ideas.

1. Flies – You lucky dog, the top gift you can give a fly fisherman is a fly. Flies are the “bait” that go on the end of the line and are used to attract fish. Flies come in a variety of types and forms. The most basic are Nymphs and Mayflies, which mimic a type of bug that lives in rivers and is considered fine dining by bass and other fish. You can expect to pay a couple of bucks per fly, so feel free to buy more than one.

2. Local Specialty Fly – Okay, this will take a bit of effort on your part. Every fishing area has a specialty fly that is known to have fish leaping out of the water before casting even begins. Since the exact fly varies from location to location, you need to stop by a local fishing store and ask for advice. Try to pick a beat up looking shop with gentlemen of an older persuasion. They’ll talk your ear off, but you’ll get something unique.

3. Fly Station – Okay, this is going to be a more costly item. A fly station looks like a small desk and for a good reason. The fly station is where your beloved angler will sit and create his or her own flies. Part of the allure of fly fishing is tying your own flies and fly stations are built for this purpose. You can expect to pay as low as $75 and as high as anyone has the never to charge.

4. Nomad Fly Fishing Journals – A little self-promotion here. Nomad Fly Fishing Journals are compact writing journals that let anglers keep notes on their efforts. They can note the fishing conditions, which flies worked the best, who the fished with and notes on what they should do differently next time. You can click the link at the bottom of this article to see the journals and expect to pay $25 for the journal and waterproof case.

If you’re looking for fly fishing gifts, consider yourself lucky. The equipment tends to be inexpensive and last a very long time.

Rick Chapo is with www.nomadjournals.com - makers of writing journals. Fly fishing journals are great fly fishing gifts for anglers and fly fishing trips and vacations. Visit www.nomadjournaltrips.com for more fly fishing articles and stories.

Stand Out as a Leader, Do 5 Things Better! Number One: Improve the Quality of Your Decision Making!

June 10th, 2007

The manager administers, the leader improves;
the manager maintains, the leader develops;
the manager relies on systems, the leader relies on people;
the manager counts on controls, the leader counts on trust;
the manager does things right, the leader does the right thing.
-Fortune Magazine

The intentions of our decisions are our brand of fertilizer that enables our results to flourish and amplify with time or, fade and wither! You got the record crop (number/result) this year. Can you do it again next year? At what cost? Is that acceptable?

What legacy did you sow to enable it to happen again? Did you strip the resources and need to start from scratch and build up the soil again? Or did you harvest sustainably so you can let it rest for a season, come back and crop it hard again?

The intention of our decision-making is the quality of the fertilizer we prepare to apply to our next crop!

Decisions made in fair times can be duly considered, socialized and delivered. They can readily add great fertilizer to a great team with outstanding results!

However, few of us work in these environments. Most of us have too many decisions to make in too little time, with out due consideration or thought. Most of us need to select what we think are the ‘big ones’ and focus on delivering these well. The quality of our selection gives critical feedback on our assumptions and therefore leadership style.

What “big ones’ do you select? Why? What are you seeking to create in these attributes, something positive or avoid something negative?

Most leaders rate themselves poorly, they have little objectivity in their assessment of the impact of their performance. Their boss is generally more objective and their direct reports most objective!

What would your direct reports say about you? Do you know? Have you collected any information? Well corporate life is about to!

IBM have an impressive management development tool that gives direct reports an opportunity to rate managers biannually. Managers that have a poor report are counseled to address the issues. Those that have two bad reports are usually removed, certainly three strikes and they are out! This is a very powerful message about leadership: that it is best assessed by those that are led!

In an effort to give leaders realistic feedback about their performance many corporations have offering 360 degree feedback. Often clients take the management feedback as more important, and pragmatically this can be true in the short term, than subordinate feedback. Is management going to continue to find this acceptable?

Staffing is most companies biggest expense. Leadership development, given 2 to 3 are developed for every one retained and placed, is therefore its greatest investment in this expense. The literature suggests 30-50% of external appointments fail. Now we are stuck between a rock and a hard place!

Corporate life is keen to assess a leaders talents and develop these, however if it can identify self limiting behavior – such as career de railers, maybe it will decide to be more cautious in the development of these individuals.

Hogan and Hogan, the most sought after leadership analysts in the USA’s Fortune 100 companies, indicate they are the inability to form a team, and a lack of understanding of your leadership style! (1)

Leadership-style is one of the most searched topics in leadership on the Internet. Now we know why! Leaders are being told to appreciate their leadership style so that they can consistently develop and apply it, thus avoiding the traps of leadership de railers!

However, leadership is intimately tied to personality, with sincerity of style being one of the most critical factors in allegiance being given! If it is personality based, how can the results of generic tools give us appropriate clarity and sense of contribution compared to what we know inside ourselves?

The answer lies in crafting our action-based leadership values into a foundation of our behavior for the ‘tough’ times. That we become the beacon of integrity we intended to be in these circumstances by doing “the right thing.”

It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.
Roy Disney

Finding The Perfect Mortgage

June 10th, 2007

Today, it seems as if everyone is offering a mortgage to those that are looking to purchase a home. There are mortgage lenders here and there, offering the ‘lowest rates’ the ‘best financing’ and the “best terms” but what is the truth to all of this? Many times, people find themselves lured into advertising and that is probably one of the worst things that you can do. Instead, when looking for a home loan, carefully think about what you are getting in the loan first.

There are several aspects that should be carefully considered when looking at a mortgage offered by any of the lenders there. Everyone should take the time to carefully consider these things as they will determine just how much money they will ultimately pay for their home as well as the experience they will have.

  • Interest rates are by far the most important aspect of the home loan. This is the charge, the cost of doing business with the financial lender. This dollar amount is going to cost a different amount of money from each lender as most will offer a different rate from each other. What is important to consider is the difference that is evident from one lender to the next. Often, cutting down the rate just slightly can save thousands of dollars in the long run.
  • The terms of the loan are also an important feature. The longer the loan is, the more interest will be charged to it and the more costly it will become. What many people think about though is the cost of the home’s monthly mortgage payment. The longer the terms of the loan are, the lower the monthly payment amount will be. Carefully find the best terms here so that you can make your monthly payments but that you can pay off your loan as quickly as possible too.
  • Customer service and experience is very important as well. If you do all of your banking on the web, you’ll want to make sure that this lender will offer that option to you as well. If you call the company to get a quote, they should provide you with the best of service. If they do not do it now (or you have to stay on hold for excessive time) then that is what you will get later on too.

The home loan that you select should have the best combination of these features. The better your interest rate is the lower the amount of money that you pay for your home is. There are many other things to consider as well, but this is the ideal topic that you need to know to get started with. Use the tools that are provided to you, such as a loan calculator to help you to determine what the loan will ultimately cost you. With so many lenders out there, looking for your business, you should provide your business to those that can offer you the best rates, the best terms and the overall best options to consider. A mortgage can be very costly if you do not pay attention to these details.

Maksim Fisher is a freelance writer, specialising in finance subjects such as loans, banking, mortgage, etc. He recommends use of a mortgage calculator for calculations at http://www.mortgagecalculatorplus.com.
