How to Use Windows XP ‘System Restore’ System Tools

August 30th, 2007

Well, we all have been there. We turn on our computer (boot up) getting ready to type that school report, or business presentation and guess what, our computer just does not want to work today. Whether it’s the word processor, spreadsheet, or financial package that isn’t working, most people do not know that Microsoft Windows XP has a built in feature that just may come and save the day. That feature is called “System Restore.”

Basically, System Restore is like a little hound that runs behind the scenes taking “snapshots” of various parts of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. So, if a part of Microsoft Windows XP stops working one day, the System Restore utility is able to reference one of the “snapshots” it took and restore your system from a previous day (a day when your computer worked). It’s kind of like going back in time to a day when your computer worked. All your current data (Microsoft Word files, etc.) are still retained, so you don’t have to worry about losing any present day files.

In order to restore your computer just follow these simple steps:

1. Close any open programs.

2. Click on the Windows “Start” button (normally located on the bottom of your computer desktop)

3. Click on “All Programs”

4. Click on “Accessories”

5. Click on “System Tools”

6. Then click on “System Restore”

7. At this point the System Restore wizard will launch. You will have two options:

a. “Restore my system from an earlier date”

b. “Create a system restore point”

If you just need to restore your system and get it working correctly again, just select option “a” and click “Next.”

8. On this screen you can select a date from the calendar that you would like to try and restore from. So, if you knew that your computer worked fine two days ago, just pick that date on the calendar and click “Next.”

9. The next screen is the confirmation window. Just verify the information on the screen and click “Next.” Windows XP will then reboot and try to restore your system with the settings from the date you selected.

The System Restore process can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on how much reconfiguration Windows XP needs to do and how fast of a PC you have. When System Restore is done, a screen will popup with the results of the restore. If it was successful, you can then log into the system and start using the computer again. Any quirky issues that you were having are now hopefully gone.

Now, on step 7b above, I mentioned the “Create a system restore point” option. This option is for when you want to force Windows XP to take a snapshot of your system just before you install a program or alter any system settings that you are not sure of. It is like a safety net for when you install any internet programs (sometimes riddled with spyware) or system drivers (video, audio, etc). If you want to revert back to a virgin state just create a restore point “before” installing any software. This way, if your machine starts acting weird, you can just restore your settings from the selected point.

With a little practise, the System Restore utility is easy to use and a great way to help ensure the safety of your computer.

Exercise, for your Health Sake

August 29th, 2007

Exercise is a crucial part of improving your health, especially as an individual gets older. Some benefits of exercise include:

 Weight loss
 Sleep better
 Reduces risk of disease
 Increases aerobic capacity
 Makes your heart stronger by increasing the stroke volume.
 Increases high density lipoprotein (HDL) or the GOOD cholesterol.
 Lowers high blood pressure.
 Strengthens the bones
 Decreases levels of triglycerides (fat) in your blood.
 Increase immune strength
 Reduces stress and depression
 Increases the quality of circulation throughout your body making your skin look healthier.

There is no excuse for not getting your daily exercise in. The average person wouldn’t make excuses for no eating, so they shouldn’t make excuses for not exercising. If you would substitute a T.V show for your exercise time than that should be all you need. The common three excuses I hear about avoiding exercise include:

 Lack of Time. I heard this countless of times and people always say that they have prior commitments.
 Costly equipment and gym membership.
 Bad weather or inefficient lights at night-time.

The truth of the matter is if you were really desperate to find a way to exercise you would find a way, no doubt. If cost is an issue than just invest in a new pair of running shoes. You could run around your neighborhood and perform some calisthenics when you get home.

Tips to Remember when exercising

Start off slowly: If you have been sedentary for quite some time, do not try to run a marathon, your body won’t appreciate it and it could be dangerous for your health. Start off walking than pick up the pace as you progress. There is no need to go overboard when starting off, take your time and make gradual increases. If you’re overweight I would suggest starting off walking.

Be constant: Don’t exercise for an hour on Monday and wait till the next Monday to exercise again. That’s two long of a break if you’re trying to get in shape, or loss weight. It has been researched that 30 minutes of exercise a day is the minimum needed to reap any weight loss benefits. I personally would recommend 60 minutes if you want to lose weight more quickly. Of course, don’t do it all in one shot. Do one 30 minute session in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

Gradually increase your intensity: After you get use to a particular exercise your body won’t gain any benefits, its time to change the intensity. As again, give your body as long as it needs for it to get use to a program, than after it has plateau move on to something more challenging.

Have fun: If you’re doing exercise and are not having fun, than I would guess that you will not stick to it for long. Find something exciting to do, so that you can kill two birds with one stone. You will get your exercise in, and you will also have a good time.

Set goals: There is no point in doing something without a purpose or meaning to you. Always set goals for yourself, and never stop doing it. When you set goals you have something specific to aim for and you will be more determined during exercise.

Summer has come and so have the swimming pool trips. Put on your swimsuits.

August 29th, 2007

Summer has come and so have the swimming pool trips. Put on your
swimsuits.

Swimming pools in summer feel like a heaven. Cannot imagine a
summer without swimming pools. Getting in the pool is not only a
great feel but a swimming pool is also a treat for your eyes {I
mean the cool water}.

In tropical and warm areas of the world there are wonderful
beaches and they offer a great place to swim. But not all parts
of the world have this great blessing and swimming pools makes
these deficiencies vanish to some extent. Although given a
choice I will be off to the beach. Afternoons and late
afternoons and also early evenings are the best times to jump
into a swimming pool.

If you are interested in starting your own pool for the season
then it’s a great way to go. First drain all the water in the
swimming pool. Use cleaning agents to clean the water clean.
Throughout the swimming season you should be brushing the sides
of your pool to loosen debris that collects there, you should be
reversing your pumping system to help clean out any build up,
and you should be vacuuming the water and skimming the surface.
This will keep your pool in tip top shape through out the season
and it will make your pool an enjoyable place to be near.
Although working on the pool may seem a lot of work its not.
Also you can hire swimming experts to do the job for you but its
not recommended unless you are rich and no time on these
activities.

Swimming is very dangerous for children. Never leave your
children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment. You must
put up a fence to separate your house from the pool.

Power safety cover that meets the standards of the American
Society for Testing and Materials should be installed. Always
rescue equipments and telephone by the pool in case of an
emergency.

When trying to teach children how to swim be with them all the
time and do not permit to go alone even with a tube. Children
have to be carefully monitored during their stay at the swimming
pool.

Swimming pools come with the gift of convenience. Also beware
of the swimming pool leaks. Presence of algae indicates a pool
leak. When in doubt call a leak detection company to further
assist you in determining if you pool has a leak.

If everything is fine then enjoy the swimming in your favorite
swimsuits.

Music Industry & Music Industry Contacts

August 29th, 2007

There is no way to avoid the saying “It’s all about who you know.” We’ve heard that phrase all over the place and specifically anytime we wanted to break into anything new. This philosophy tells me that I can get a great car at a great price depending on who I know. It also tells me I may be able to get my foot in the door with Universal Records, depending on who I know.

But that’s very broad to me because any and everything can be boiled down to - who you know. When it comes to music industry contacts I’m very skeptical and I think alot of the selling points are manipulative.
The one thing that is needed most in the music industry is a directory of individuals who can actually help you with your career. Even if you do have the contact information for Steve Lunt , you still need to get his attention and get an incredibly good product.

I tend to think that if a contact is easy to get, then it’s probably easy for thousands upon thousands of other people just like me to get the same contact information. That’s actually just a fact because anyone serious about their career should be able to scrape up 40bucks to get a directory full of contacts.
I would spend more time making sure I am familiar with publicists, A&Rs, A&R assistants, and Interns.

When you do obtain contact information for an exec, you are sure to spend more time talking to their assistant or an intern anyway. So instead of talking to them on a (secretarial or assistant) level, make sure to get them actively involved in what you have to present.

People always say know the names of the assistants, as they are “gatekeepers”, but it’s more important to be able to get as much information as you can about what’s happening in the department, which projects are most important to them at the moment, what’s going on in their week, etc. This information is just as valuable as the contact and will help you in your decision making.

A few resources I am most familiar with:

  • A&R Directory
  • Indie Bible
  • Galaris

When I need to be very specific about contacts for a specific artist or celebrity - I use - Celebrity Access; although they are out of reach for most people - this is still another advantage. Most people will work so much longer and harder to get this kind of quality information that is not offered in the above resources.

Howard Britt is the owner of Music Oxygen, a music industry resource that unsigned bands and independent artists use to promote their music and connect with fans. More information and resources can be found on his Music Industry Blog.

Truck Tonneau Covers Shield More Than You Would Think

August 29th, 2007

If you’ve got a truck, adding a tonneau cover to your bed is an absolute must. Not only are tonneaus useful in any situation, they provide loads of essential benefits, including:

• Organized storage for whatever you’re hauling in your truck bed, plus the bonus of keeping a lid on loose items

• Coverage from potentially damaging weather conditions, like rain, snow and extreme sun

• Complete coverage of your payload that keeps your cargo out of sight from potential theft

• An immediate improvement in gas mileage with tight, aerodynamic materials covering your otherwise drag-prone open bed

• Sleek looks that range from smooth leather grain patterns to ultra-custom color matched style

Tonneau Cover Storage Basics

You haul everything from hardware to the occasional load of groceries in the back of your truck. A tonneau cover helps keep a lid on all of it, shielding your cargo from the blowing winds of freeway driving and all kinds of pounding wet weather. It’s an easy way to make sure nothing disappears from your bed while you’re driving or parked.

A guide to protecting your gear from the weather with a tonneau cover

Even simple cover over your gear can help prevent weather damage. Tonneau covers take protection a few steps further though, with some ingenious design features. For instance, most tonneau covers employ strategically-placed weather seals that channel water away from your cargo. And, many models use raised and arched support bows to encourage moisture runoff. While no bed cover is completely water-tight, most will do an outstanding job of keeping your gear high and dry in nasty weather.

Tonneau Security: A Quick Reference

When your cargo is out of sight, it’s out of a would-be thief’s mind. Tonneau covers make the contents of your truck bed a mystery, giving you confidence that your belongings will be right where you left them.

Beyond simple coverage, tonneau covers offer higher levels of security, depending on the model. Most hinged (lift-up) tonneau covers can be fully-secured using a locking tailgate. Hard top and retractable tonneaus generally have secure key locking systems that latch closed at the tailgate.

With a variety of security measures, a good tonneau cover makes your truck bed far more versatile than ever before — ideal for use as a hauler or hiding spot.

Gas Mileage and Tonneau Covers: The Basics

Trucks are getting taller, engines are bigger, payloads are getting deeper and the traffic is thicker than ever. You can probably hear big oil companies laughing with their fistfuls of cash every time the pump takes a big bite from your spending money. A tonneau cover helps you even the score in one of the only ways you can - by prolonging your next trip to the service station.

Open truck beds can be a huge drag on your gas mileage. As air flows over the aerodynamic front end of your vehicle, it can swirl into your bed and catch on your tailgate — stealing several miles off your latest tank.

Covering your truck bed with a tight tonneau cover — even a soft model — stops the tailgate drag. Air hits the taut surface of a hard or soft tonneau cover and continues past your vehicle with nothing to catch. And, it saves you mileage without crazy tailgate removal or potentially damaging open-gate driving.

How much savings? A 5% improvement in fuel economy is the industry-wide accepted number, though up to 10% is possible. Your vehicle could see bigger or smaller effects. Still, the idea is simple: a tonneau cover will save gas and eventually pay for itself.

Great tonneau cover looks: a quick guide

A smooth tonneau cover adds custom truck style to bland uncovered truck beds. Each tonneau cover we offer sports a custom fit to the dimensions of your specific year, make and model. The result is a special fit and exact appearance that was made for your truck.

Tonneau covers can add any level of extra smart appearance to your truck. Soft tonneau covers stretch tight, not just for improved mileage but also for style. With a variety of lid materials, retractable tonneau covers are the kings of the low-profile smooth factor. Hard top tonneau covers are the ultimate in custom looks: molded-over edges, seamless fitting and optional paint matching.

A Guide to the History of Tonneau Covers

Tonneau covers (also known as truck bed covers, bed lids or truck lids) have evolved from a number of versions designed for a variety of uses. Because many crude bed cover designs existed over the years, no one person or company can lay claim as the originator of the tonneau cover.

Soft covers gained prominence while playing an important roll on major speedways. Top-class sport truck racers used these flexible bed covers as a lightweight way to improve their aerodynamics and reduce drag. These racetrack tonneau covers sat flush with the top of the bed and employed the same heavy-duty materials used in today’s soft covers.

Hard top tonneau covers grew in popularity as an alternative to full-size camper shells. These highly-customized truck bed lids, most commonly made from fiberglass, have evolved into tonneaus using a variety of materials and opening mechanisms.

With every vehicle and every lifestyle kept in mind, Andrew Bernhardt hopes that this information will help you find the right tonneau cover to customize your pickup truck. For more information about soft roll up tonneau covers and more to upgrade your vehicle, please visit AutoAnything.com.

Beacon Verse Series, Article One

August 29th, 2007

I am but a ‘Beacon,’
Like a lighthouse in the storm;
So, when it’s a friend you’re seekin’,
Come on in, I’ll keep you warm…

Like a fleece,
I will enfold you
To protect you from the gale;
‘though release,
No, I’ll not hold you,
When it’s time that you set sail…
Beacon Verse Series – Beacon© 1977 (part one)

The above poem is the first page of Beacon© Verse By Russ Miles which I published in 1977. Very well received within the local Portland, Oregon bookstores – which I had set up for distribution – I was ready to publish another 5,000 copies. I knew that the “Limited Edition,” hand numbered 1,000 copies would be sold out within a couple of months…

Then, I had – what I call – “An attack of conscience.” What if an unforgiving God were to hold me responsible for corrupting the minds – and influencing the actions – of innocents?

Frightening, purgatorial – and worse – images twisted my self-seeking, 29-year-old scruples. I’d only seen pictures – until that time – of Dante’s Inferno. Yet, having been raised a Catholic – I knew that hell was hot – and that the devil would administer no mercy.

I didn’t pray – back then. Certainly, I hadn’t seen the inside of a confessional – in years. I just hoped that I hadn’t already done too much damage. Immediately, I removed all remaining copies of Beacon© and my 2nd poetry book, Imperfections©, from the market – in early 1979. I felt my actions were consistent with the last poem’s promise in my 48 page, Beacon poetry book – as included below:

Beacon (part two)

When the waves break high around you,
And you fear you might capsize;
When the world is out to drown you,
And the storm clouds black your skies…

When adrift
Upon life’s oceans
So, your waters all seem strange,
Eyes uplift,
Dispel such notions,
With God’s help, you’ll find your ‘Range.’

Is Your Rewards Credit Card The Right One?

August 29th, 2007

A rewards credit card is a great way for you to get something back for all of the money you have been spending. These rewards can come in many different forms such as gift cards, points etc. If you already have a rewards card, is it the right one? If you don’t already have a rewards credit card, then you could be missing out on offers that could be to your advantage. There’s an old saying that you don’t get anything in life for free, but some credit card companies contradict that saying by offering rewards every time you use their card.

The card companies make offers like those of their best rewards credit cards to attract new business. They also do it to hold onto their existing customers. The credit card business is very competitive and companies are constantly thinking up new ways to attract new customers and reward old customers for their loyalty. The reward credit card is only the latest in a long line of great ways to promote their cards.

Some of the best reward credit cards on offer give the customer savings on items like travel with air miles, groceries, gasoline, even hotel bills. If you want to take advantage of what these rewards credit cards offer, it’s best to find one that will give you the most benefit. It’s no good getting a card that offers free air miles for instance, if you’re afraid of flying. Go online, or look for adverts that offer you something you need. Take your time in choosing a card that’s going to be beneficial to you. Have a look at your normal spending habits. Is there any of the rewards credit cards on offer that can make you a weekly saving on items you normally buy?

Rewards credit cards that offer rebates on gasoline purchases are commonly available. Surely, you are all well aware of the continuing rise in prices of gas. Wouldn’t it be great to offset some of these price increases by getting some cash returned to you every time you make a purchase of gasoline? Many a gasoline rewards credit card will guarantee you a flat percentage cash back on every purchase. Some of the best rewards credit cards will give you 5% back on every purchase of gasoline, as well as another 1% back on all other purchases. If you do a lot of traveling by automobile then this type of card could save you a considerable amount of money throughout the year.

Why not look for a card that offers you the best of both worlds. Some lenders will offer 0% APR credit cards that also offer rewards. Even if you have a rewards credit card you could change it for another that is offering 0% interest. Many of the lenders will let you transfer your existing balance to a new card which can be of great benefit. Doing so could reduce your monthly outgoings as well as giving you the benefit of a rewards scheme.

There is also more than one rewards credit card that offers the customer points. Every time you use your rewards credit card to make a purchase you are given points. These are normally offered at a rate of 1 point to every dollar you spend. Some companies offer you more if you shop at a partner company. The difference between the offers lenders make is when you come to redeem your points. Some will redeem your points for gift certificates, others will have an online shopping portal where you can go and choose gifts that have a value in points. Your rewards credit cards points can then be exchanged for these goods. Banks and lenders have partnered with many retail companies to offer rewards credit cards that can be redeemed against the partner’s goods. Partners include retail stores, hotels and airlines. If any of these are products which you regularly use, then these could be the best rewards credit cards for you. Apply today for your best rewards credit cards and find out that you can get something for nothing.
