If You Want To REALLY Promote Your Site, Here’s How…

January 31st, 2008

Copyright 2006 Steve Shaw

Site promotion gimmicks and traffic techniques come and go, but
the ones that really work are those that stand the test of time.
This article highlights what I consider to be the most effective
methods to promote your web site of all time.

1. Get Your Site High In The Search Engines

Getting your site linked high in the search engines for your
keywords and keyphrases.

One of the best ways to do this is to ensure your site has a
good number of incoming links from quality sites - I discuss how
to achieve this with relative ease below.

Also make sure that your site reflects the keywords/keyphrases
that you are looking for - they should be in your title tag,
your headline tags, and in your initial paragraphs. Don’t
however over do it, or it will look like “keyword stuffing” and
you will do more damage than good - just make sure they are
there in a natural fashion.

Don’t aim for the most popular keywords, you will have a much
harder time achieving success. Do some analysis using a tool
such as WordTracker.com, and aim for keywords and keyphrases for
which you have a fighting chance.

2. Create A Buzz

If your site offers something new and exciting, it creates a wow
factor, and news about your site will spread far and wide with
very little further effort on your part.

I stumbled on how effective this was myself almost by accident,
when I created one of the very first popup generators online and
added it to my first very amateurish web site. It was free for
people to use, I did no promotion of it whatsoever, but people
came from far and wide to use it, it was mentioned in many high
profile ezines with large readerships, and it proved so
successful that with some further development it turned into a
piece of software that I still sell today on one of my sites.

3. Don’t Waste Your Visitors

Every visitor that comes to your site is hard-earned - so don’t
‘waste’ them. You want them to come back, to return time and
time again. This will ensure your traffic climbs over time,
rather than remains static.

Firstly, ensure your site doesn’t scare them away. Make it easy
to use, visually appealing, and treat critical emails that you
may receive from visitors from time to time like gold - while
not all criticisms are valid representations of how the majority
of visitors see your site, some of these emails can help you
turn your business around if you listen in a positive manner
instead of react negatively and defensively.

Secondly, try to subscribe as many visitors as possible to a
list, so that you can correspond with them time and time again.
Sending them news about your site for example will keep them
coming back.

4. Pay-Per-Click Engines

Bidding for keywords on PPCs like Google Adwords won’t usually
bring you large amounts of traffic, but if you do it carefully,
the traffic it does bring you should be highly targeted and
therefore very valuable.

The trick is to know your stats. Know exactly what your sales
conversion rates are per keyword, and how much investment on
each keyword is viable for you.

For example, let’s say your site sells artist pencils:

- If you are bidding $0.30 for the keyword ‘pencil’, each sale
of a box of pencils brings you $10 profit, but only 1 in 100
clicks for the keyword ‘pencil’ brings you a sale, you are
spending $30 for each sale of $10, which is losing you a large
amount of money.

- However, if you are bidding $0.10 for the keyphrase ‘artist
pencils’, and 1 in 25 buys from your site, you are spending
$2.50 on each sale that brings you a profit of $10, which is a
profitable investment - i.e. it brings you a net profit of $7.50
per sale.

5. Strategic linking

This can be one of the most important methods to generate
traffic over the long-term. Not only can you receive traffic
direct from the links, the more links there are, the higher your
position will tend to be in the search engines.

In my opinion, I’ve never found reciprocal linking strategies
particularly effective, i.e. you can spend a great deal of time
building up single links to your site, and as they are
reciprocal, they are not as effective as the non-reciprocal
links that the search engines prefer. The fact is that search
engines know about reciprocal linking strategies, and reciprocal
links only tell the search engines that you have a reciprocal
linking strategy, not that your site is an effective resource
that other sites are willingly linking to in a more natural
fashion.

The following two methods are in my opinion the most effective
ways to build up links, and concentrating on these can repay
dividends over the long-term:

a. Article Submissions

The idea here is that you write an article that other webmasters
and publishers can freely reprint on their web sites. Other
sites and publishers desperately need content - you simply
provide it. The pay-off for you is that to reprint it, they have
to include your resource box that contains a link to your web
site, and in the majority of cases, the link will be of the
valuable non-reciprocal kind.

By writing your article and then distributing it as widely as
possible, you can end up with hundreds of incoming links to your
site from other quality web sites. This can be the most
effective site promotion strategy there is.

(For more detailed information on how to do this, you can
subscribe to a free course at
http://www.takanomi.com/publish-articles.php )

b. Your Own Affiliate Program

With an affiliate program, people link to your site and receive
a commission on any sales that result from their referrals.

This provides a strong encouragement for others to provide links
to your site - the trick is to ensure the affiliate link
actually links direct to your domain and not through a
third-party site, otherwise they will get the benefit from the
link rather than you.

Coneflower or Echinacea - the Best Thing in Your Bed

January 31st, 2008

There are few things more exciting for gardeners at this time of year than dreaming of new plants. I’ll focus on a few of the better plants in the next few weeks but let’s start with the best example of new breeding.

Our old North American native friend Echinacea or purple coneflower is really letting loose this coming spring. The work of several major plant-breeding houses is coming to the market and while the plants will be expensive, they are wonderful. The double flowering ‘Razzmatazz’ with its double pink flowers are quite hardy as well as gorgeous. It will be complemented by ‘Doppelganger’ a coneflower that puts one blossom right on top of the first, resembling an apartment of flowers rather than a single bloom. Note that this double-decker flower usually comes into its own in the second year. This one has caught the imagination of the nursery trade almost as much as ‘Sparkler’ a variegated leaf coneflower. The variegation in ‘Sparkler’ is flecked throughout the leaf while the variegation in the equally new ‘Prairie Frost’ is a broad band of cream around each leaf.

I’m also looking forward to having ‘Fragrant Angel’ in my garden as its large white blooms are extremely fragrant. Add the ‘Rocky Top Hybrids’ to this list of coneflowers (mauve flowers and compact growth) and you have an entire menu of new Echinacea to find this coming summer. Two dwarf plants ‘Kim’s Mophead’ and ‘Kim’s Knee High’ will find themselves in my clay pots along with the ‘Rocky Top Hybrids’.

Echinacea ‘Big Sky Sunrise’ has soft lemon-yellow blooms and is a knock out plant in my garden while its cousin ‘Big Sky Sunset’ has wide, very bright orange petals. These are both plants to watch for and pay the price. Hardy in my zone 4 garden.

Plant all these in full sun in well-drained soils and you’ll enjoy them for years. They’re trouble free and easy to grow plants!

Hollywood Anti-Americans

January 31st, 2008

Just when you thought Hollywood could sink no lower, they outdo themselves. Over 100 Hollywood celebrities have written/signed a letter for President Bush filled with anti-war rhetoric. Words cannot do justice to describe these far left wing anti-American hypocrites.

These guys prefer to oppose President Bush at the expense of national security. If everyone thought like these cowards, millions would die or be enslaved by butchers. These simpletons have learned nothing from history. Would they have stood up against America instead of Hitler? Would these same people have turned their backs on the holocaust just as they are the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein? Where were they when Clinton made threats to Iraq? It was ok then, but not now? They seem to have forgotten the attacks of 9/11. Remember when some of these same people would not go to New York City because they were afraid? President Bush went to ground zero for the entire world to see while these foul mouthed hypocrites were cowering in fear. Now once again they have all the answers.

Mike Farrell and Janeane Garofalo went on Hannity and Colmes and said that we should let the inspectors do their jobs. Why can’t they let President Bush do his? I will never understand why they think they know more than the President about national security. What gives them the right to receive so much national news coverage to express their views? They go on these shows wearing glasses halfway down their noses. This gives them the scholarly look. We are then supposed to take their political views seriously. Why don’t they run for office if they have such good ideas? Why not go head to head against Rush Limbaugh on the radio. The answer is simple. They can only spout off short, prepared scripts full of old failed liberal beliefs. They cannot provide facts. They cannot take the heat. They do not want to debate. They have no answers and cannot distinguish between the fantasy of acting and the real world. They believe they are better than we are and thus we must listen to them. They are in fact, insecure, immoral people who need to be accepted for more than just being uneducated actors.

There is nothing wrong with having opinions. However, the anti-America, in your face politics has nothing to do with ideas. It may have more to do with hatred for Christians and Christian values. We are talking about Hollywood here. Their insults against the very people who are protecting their freedoms are just sick. These are cowards beyond comprehension. Many of these people must simply be told what to think. How can Hollywood consist of 90% far left-wingers? It used to be a widely accepted fact that many in Hollywood got there by way of the casting couch. Now it appears that becoming a fanatical liberal pacifist is part of the deal.

The list of mind numb spineless Hollywood liberals is large. Some of the Hollywood left include: Barbara Streisand, Martin Sheen, Harry Belafonte, Julia Roberts, Alec Baldwin, Janeane Garofalo, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robins, Woody Harrelson, Mike Farrell, Ed Asner and Richard Gere.

It wouldn’t be fair to Hollywood if I didn’t mention some of those brave enough to stand up for what they believe. This list includes Tom Selleck, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Patricia Heaton, Rick Schroder, Bo Derek and Charlton Heston. There are others, although it is much harder to add to than the list of the ignorant Hollywood crowd.

Many of the people criticizing President Bush for going after terrorists before they hit us are the same ones that want to blame him for not preventing the 9/11 attacks. They are the same ones who did not speak out against Bill Clinton when he tried talking tough about Iraq. If it was right then, how can it not be right now, given all that has happened?

The truth is, if we do things the Hollywood way, millions might die. Who really wants peace? The ones who would have us close our eyes and allow innocent citizens to be repeatedly attacked or those who believe in defending freedom? You might want to think about that when you decide what movies you want to see.

Poster, Print or Painting. Where Are You Going To Put It?

January 30th, 2008

If you are redesigning or decorating a room, or house, care has to be taken where your piece of art is to be displayed. Even if you have bought a picture on impulse there are a few tips that will not only enhance the picture but its surroundings.

As a good rule of thumb it is good to hang a picture so that its centre is roughly at eye level. If you have a grouping of pictures then also the centre of the group should be at approximate eye level.

Wall size.

For a narrow wall go for a smaller picture, or group of small pictures.

For large walls go for the larger pictures.

For walls that link to a low ceiling go for pictures that are vertically longer as this will help give the illusion that the ceiling is higher and open the room up.

Picture framing.

As a guide neutral coloured, plain or soft /delicate paintings will suit a more basic plain frame.

Dramatic pictures may deserve a much bolder frame.

Will the frames go together if pictures are hung in a group?

Picture grouping.

If you intend to hang more than one picture in a group then layout the pictures first, maybe on the floor to get a good idea as how they will interact. Bear in mind the layout and furniture in the proposed area as this may influence how you want the pictures laid out.

Measure the total height and width of the layout, and as a tip tape some lengths of string to the wall to mimic the outside of the layout to make sure you are happy with positioning, and to act as guide for hanging.

Consider the layout of the rest of the room. Do you want just one group of pictures in one area, or will one or two pictures elsewhere help balance the room?

Help, advice and ideas.

Look through magazines and notice peoples houses for styles and layouts you like. But an important point to remember is to look for what would be good for, and suit your home. Adapting what you want to fit your surroundings will give your home the stylish look you want. There is nothing worse than a picture that doesn’t suit a room hanging in a position that doesn’t look right.

If you know someone who has the layout of their home you love, get their opinion on your choice and layout. They will be flattered.

As a final tip - try to keep pictures away from bright sunshine, as they will fade over a period of time.

Positioning your pictures is not a science, but a bit of planning and attention will no doubt give you years of joy.

Are you interested in increasing your Google PageRank?

January 30th, 2008

You should be. If you have never heard of Google PageRank and
you have established a website, it is high time you learned
about Google PageRank and what it means to you and the success
of your website. Having an excellent Google PageRank can either
make or break a website in terms of overall success. Let’s take
a look at what Google PageRank is and why it is so important to
every website owner.

First, a word about the Google Search engine: Google is one of
the most popular search engines on the Internet. Not only is
Google’s search engine the absolute largest of its kind, the
company focuses on making web information easy to access and
even easier to find. Google has designed a unique system and the
search engine has yet to be surpassed in terms of the
information it provides. Google has grown immensely since its
early beginning in 1996 and it will continue to be a predominant
force on the Internet. Furthermore, because Google offers easy
access to immediate information, they own one of the top
Internet search engines in the world. Thus, it would serve a
webmaster well to become familiar with the Google PageRank
process-the Google PageRank is an algorithm that is based on
inbound links and other factors and will ultimately determine
the location of listing of your website in the Google Search
Engine.

What precisely is Google PageRank?

Google PageRank is a process the search engine’s uses as a way
of selecting sites to answer specific queries. Basically, when
an Internet user submits a query, the Google search engine will
attempt to match websites to the query that has been posed. Yet,
there is a bit more to this simple science than the act of
submitting a query suggests. Rather, behind the scenes, Google
uses specific algorithms to determine if a site specifically
address a web user’s needs by analyzing the content of a site by
keyword and by the number of inbound links associated with the
site-every inbound link is viewed as a vote and the more votes
one has, in conjunction with the more keywords one has, the
higher their Google PageRank is.

Why is Your Google PageRank Significant?

What does it mean to you when your Google PageRank is increased?
Does it really matter what your Google PageRank is at all? You
bet it does-the higher your Google PageRank is the higher on a
search engine’s listing your website will appear. Thus, if you
are looking for top billing, especially in a search engine as
popular as the one Google offers, you will definitely want to
maximize your efforts of getting your website visible and
improving your PageRank is the best way to accomplish such a
task. Moreover, the higher you appear on the search engine
listing offered by Google, or many other search engines, the
easier your website is to find. Essentially this equates to more
web traffic for your website and if you are running an online
business, more web traffic ultimately means more profit for
you.

Making Google PageRank Improvements

If you are looking to improve your Google PageRank you can do so
by starting a link campaign. A link campaign can help you
increase more inbound links to your website and in turn, more
inbound links will increase your Google PageRank. How do you
start a link campaign? Well, you can go the hard route by
scouring the Internet to find websites similar to your own. Or,
you can make your link campaign a far easier process by using
the services afforded to you by PageRank Browser and locate all
of the best, themed websites on the Internet with relative
ease.

Of course, there are few things you must bear in mind when you
begin your link campaign. Google actually rates various links
and holds some links higher than others. In other words, if you
link to 100 less than popular sites you may increase your Google
PageRank. Conversely, if you link to 50 extremely popular sites
and you get inbound links in return, you may significantly
increase your Google PageRank because the most popular sites on
the Internet are linking directly too you. Thus, when you begin
your link campaign, keep this popularity issue in the back of
your mind. Further, know that in using PageRank Browser, you
will be able to locate the popular sites with ease, and thereby
significantly increase your Google PageRank.

About Inbound Links

Quite frankly, some links that you will establish will be better
than others. You goal will be to establish the best links
possible by examining the quality of inbound links. Various
webmaster tools can help you determine the quality of the
reciprocal links you establish. You will want to work hard at
establishing direct inbound links to your site-direct links from
already popular websites. You will also need to establish links
to websites that are similar to yours-remember the search engine
algorithm used by Google to determine your page rank is based on
relevance. You will also find that the location of inbound links
is of significant importance. For example, when you establish
inbound links, those links that are buried deep within a website
will have less influence on the ranking of your website in
Google’s search engine.

What is clear is that your Google PageRank is of significant
importance. Thus, every effort should be used to improve your
Google PageRank-with the use of webmaster tools and the use of
sites like PageRank Browser you should have little difficulty
getting your PageRank right where it should be. Therefore, you
will not only improve your PageRank you will improve the web
traffic you receive by leaps and bounds. Moreover, your improved
PageRank will make you a force on the Internet to be reckoned
with-you will have a highly recognizable website for all your
efforts and you will ultimately improve your online business’
bottom line.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Review for the Playstation 2 (PS2), XBox and the PC

January 30th, 2008

GTA: Vice City is the fourth game in the Grand Theft Auto series. It takes place in the year 1986 in Vice City which is modeled after Miami, Florida. You could say that the theme is GoodFellas meets Miami Vice. Tommy Vercetti is the main character who was recently released from prison after doing a stint of 15 years. Tommy was and is involved with the mob so when he got busted he had the opportunity to rat them out for a lesser sentence, but didn’t. As a reward the mob boss sent Tommy to Vice City on a job, a really good job, but things were fouled up. Someone had obviously had it out for him in a bad way and they decided to double-cross him, only he doesn’t know who that someone is. Now the mob is none too pleased with him and he wants to find out who is at fault for everything that has gone wrong. Tommy is on a mission.

The mob that Tommy works for is the Forelli family and they sent him to Vice City to score some cocaine and then set up shop. Only his very first deal goes horribly wrong leaving him with absolutely nothing. So Tommy starts nosing around, trying to figure out who is behind all of this before he gets taken out himself.

The voice for Tommy Vercetti is done by Ray Liotta who has had some experience playing the part as a punk in the movie GoodFellas. He sounds like the genuine deal. Tommy comes from Liberty City and so does the Forelli family. Liberty City is where GTA: III takes place. There is some cohesiveness between GTA: III and GTA: Vice City.

Tommy Vercetti starts out living in a hotel room near the beach, this is his safe house, a place to take cover when being pursued by the police. If you change clothes the cops won’t recognize you when you reappear again. In the hotel room you can stock up on some weapons and save the game when you feel the need to do so. Throughout the game other places will go on the market that you can buy. Once you buy a place you can save your game there and hide out there if need be. Also you will begin getting missions at these places. Many interesting places will come up for sale such as a strip club, a taxi company, an ice cream delivery shop, a film studio, the Malibu Club, and even a car dealership. Once all of the missions have been completed for that particular building you will begin earning money there. Be sure to make your rounds to collect your money often.

There are plenty of side missions that have nothing at all to do with the story line, but will help you out by either giving you money or special abilities. Try out the fire-fighter missions, the vigilante missions, the ambulance missions, or the taxi missions which were in the previous game too. Also there are new missions such as pizza delivery and target practice. Don’t miss out on the dirt bike races and mini remote control car races down by the beach either.

This is the 1980’s so expect some very tacky styles such as pastel suits and buildings. You will even hook up with a band called Love Fist who looks and sounds very typical for the 1980’s. Tommy even wears a Hawaiian t-shirt for the better part of the game. The music on the radio stations play songs from around that time period and talk radio spouts off little quips about the era.

Ray Liotta is not the only big name on the casting list for this game. Look forward to hearing the voices of Gary Busey, Dennis Hopper, and Jenna Jameson. The voice actors did an outstanding job. In fact most of the sound in this game is spectacular. The sound effects for the guns, the vehicles, etc. make you feel like your in the game. The choice of songs from the 1980’s was a nice mix. I can honestly say that nothing is lacking in this department.

There is an array of choices for weaponry and vehicles alike. There are mopeds, dirt bikes, hogs, helicopters, seaplanes, tanks, race cars, trucks, and the list goes on. As for weapons look forward to guns, guns, guns, flamethrowers, chainsaws, screwdrivers, knives, machetes, baseball bats, etc. You can find these in the mall or at Ammu-Nation. Many of these will be needed for the 80 plus missions that there are to complete.

Look forward to the police being more difficult to escape from. They seem to be smarter in Vice City than they were in Liberty City. They come equipped with tack strips to pop your tires and roadblocks to get in your way. Prepare for war with the police because they mean business. When you draw too much attention to yourself the FBI and the army will join in on the chase, then your chances are slim to none. If too many cops come on the scene at once the game has a tendency to slow down which makes it even more difficult on you.

The graphics are splendid, the characters look more life-like, but not perfect. However you can find yourself facing a building that you didn’t even know was there because your going too fast for the game to catch up. You can see the sun shining on the windows of the cars. There are posters on the walls with pictures and writing that you can actually make out. Not to mention the area is huge once you have access to everything.

The gameplay is exciting although very similar to GTA: III. This is a spruced up version of a game already made, but it’s still fun to play again. The story is different of course and there are some new, innovative things about the game, but all in all it’s the same as the last one. It’s funny, it’s raunchy, it’s violent, and it’s definitely not for children. You will probably never run out of things to do, although you may get bored after awhile. The missions can be a bit difficult, but the game is pretty easy to figure out. When your feeling stressed out just bust out GTA: Vice City and take it out on some of these animated characters, after all that’s what their here for.

Tips On Choosing An Online College

January 29th, 2008

The dream of completing your college education or furthering your studies is no longer elusive. The World Wide Web boom has brought education to your key board. Many established and renowned universities are offering degrees in varied disciplines through online courses. Studies done by the Distance Education and Training Council in Washington and other regulatory institutions indicate that over 2.25 million people are registered for online courses at universities in the US.

Before registering for a course you need to spend some time thinking. Do I want to do a course that will further my career or learn something that I have an abiding interest in? Will I be devoted and complete the course work in time? Take a look at your schedules and find out where you will slot in time for study.

Online courses offer great conveniences, flexibility, and a world class education brought to your computer. While choosing a college consider the following:

• What are the basic qualifications you need to be eligible for a course are there any tests you need to take.

• Is the college reliable? Does it have the required accreditations?

• How large are the classes? When the class strength is smaller then each student will receive more time from the instructors. On the other hand a large enrollment indicates success of the course. So you need to carefully weigh all the different aspects.

• Research blogs and other online messaging centers to find out about the opinion and experiences of students who have satisfactorily complete courses or are disgruntled. Read surveys and analysis about online education. Ask the college for referrals. Examine alumni success. Find out what percentage of students successfully complete the program and how many work professionally in the field of study.

• Study the online curriculum as well as suggested time-frame carefully. Find out how many students have been able to complete the course work within the given time. Determine whether the coursework meets your educational needs and career goals. Check how current the course work is and whether the textbooks and study materials are relevant.

• Ask if the university has a 24/7 customer service program and whether you will be eligible for any technical help regarding the software or programs you will need to use. Many universities assign a personal advisor to students one who will answer questions willingly and take care all nitty gritties like enrollment procedures, course work submissions and so on right until graduation.

• Check out the credentials for the faculty, their qualifications and training to conduct an online class room with ease. Otherwise it may be a question of the “blind leading the blind.”

• Read the offer document carefully and ensure that the course is 100% online. Some universities are known to use mail, videotapes, and on-campus programs as part of “online course” work. Ask how long the online program has been in place and are there any rough spots they have encountered. Read carefully the institution’s ethical standard document, most reputed schools have a policy readily available for review.

• Check thoroughly the institutions financial history and current position. Make sure you are not registering with a fly-by-night operator.

• Find out what the accreditations of the university are. In the US accreditations come from Middle States, New England, North Central, Northwest, and Southern Western. They have a membership program as well as a system wherein each others accreditations are acknowledged.

• Most important ask about fees and financial aid. Find out what the tuitions fees are and whether any other costs like lab fees, technology fees and so on are to be paid. You will also have to cost expenses towards maintaining your computer and its peripherals like scanners, printers, and fax modem, as well as Internet costs and provider fees.

Surf the World Wide web and visit directories like : http://www.collegenet.com/ ; http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/rankindex_brief.php ; as well as http://www.forbes.com/online_colleges.html among thousand other sites. See official sites like http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cool/ and http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/infousa/educ/edlinks.htm and http://www.ed.gov/index.jhtml . It is an important decision to be made and should be made with knowledge and concrete facts.

Comforter Choices

January 29th, 2008

There are a wide variety of comforters to choose from. In
choosing a comforter or comforter set that’s right for your
sleeping quarters and you, there are things to consider.

Silk Comforters - are whats considered a luxury comforter.
Today being more health conscious, many people are choosing silk
comforters because there soft and luxurious. Silk duvets are
also hypoallergenic and not attractive to dust mites. So those
that are allergic or chemically sensitive, the silk comforter is
an excellent choice.

Down Comforter - usually filled with duck or goose feathers in
a cotton shell. The down comforter is warm in the winter but hot
in the summer. The higher the fill count the softer and warmer
the comforter. Goose feathers provide a softer feeling than duck
feathers. Make sure you check to make sure that the thread count
on the shell is high to prevent feathers from protruding through
the shell.

Synthetic Down Comforters - are also hypoallergenic and
simulate the feel and softness of real down. The benefit to
synthetic down is laundering unlike real down it is low
maintenance and easy to wash.

Cotton Comforter - is a 100% cotton fill and shell. Cotton
does not provide a light feeling. If you like something heavy on
top then this is an excellent choice. A cotton comforter breaths
so they are best used in warm weather. Insulating properties are
not like the down and silk comforters.

Please keep in mind that the right comforter might just keep you

January 29th, 2008

My husband and I tried an experiment one night. We were invited to a dinner party with three other couples we didn’t know. What we did know is that we were all around the same age. We also knew what we were having for dinner. The purpose of the dinner party was to have an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.

That evening as we were heading to the party, we decided to try a communication experiment: we agreed that our role that evening was to ask questions to keep the conversation rolling. You know those 7-minute lulls that occur in conversation? Rather than to allow those lulls and to keep the conversation interesting we’d simply ask questions.

The dinner party lasted two and a half hours. During our time together, my husband and I simply kept the conversation going by asking various members at the table what their interests were, where they’d been on their last vacation, what pets they had as children, describe a memorable experience from their childhood, etc. The mood of the evening was general, casual conversation. Each time we asked a question of one person, it inspired a flow of conversation from the others along similar lines.

At the end of the evening, when my husband and I were leaving the hosts’ home the hosts stopped us at the door to ask a question. They asked: “How did you become such good conversationalists?” We just looked at one another and smiled. The interesting thing about that evening is that we learned a tremendous amount about those six other people, but they learned virtually nothing about us. We had kept the conversation on them and about them, which kept them talking. Consequently, they thought we were amazing!

If you want to get a conversation going with people, talk to them about their favorite subjectsthemselves. Most people get the sense they are never fully listened to. We can increase the level of respect we show them and show that we care about them individually by getting them talking about themselves, their interests, their thoughts, their desires. When we do that, not only are we gathering information about the people; we are also putting their needs before our owna huge sign of respect.

Practice with Conversations at Work

Think about that in terms of your professionalism. If you can discover the needs, wants, and desires of your internal and external clients, you can help to fulfill those needs. When their needs are fulfilled they are generally more cooperative and more productive workers. Your goal, however, cannot be to feign interest in them in order to get more work out of them. People see through that false interest in a heartbeat.

Instead, practice putting the conversations of others ahead of your own just for the sake of showing and giving respect. That in itself is enough of a reason to allow others to speak fully and completely about their topics of interest. When they are allowed that gift, you will benefit from the relationship. You will be learning the value of giving the gift of listening to others, which results in improved rapport.
