Mobile broadband searches hit peak

May 27th, 2008

The rapid update in the UK of mobile broadband internet as a consumer technology has (of course) been echo’d in the search engines with a seemingly inexorable increase in searches for “mobile broadband” over the past twelve months. However, a quick glance at the stats from both Hitwise and Google trends suggests that takeup has now fallen right off, or (at the very least) has hit a meaningful blip. Searches for “mobile broadband” and related phrases hit a peak in early April (or slightly earlier, according to Google Trends) and have fallen quite dramatically (rescued slightly by a recent rally).

Mobile broadband packages allow consumers to plug a ‘dongle’ (basically like a USB stick) into their laptop, and access broadband on the move from anywhere with a mobile phone signal. If you’re in a 3G area you can get up to 7.2Mb (according to the advertising), but even in 2G areas you can get a good, old-fashioned 56K dial up speed.

The fall off might simply be down the UK’s seasonal Q2 slump in broadband demand, which doesn’t really pick up again until the Autumn. However one might have expected the growth for such a new and trendy technology to be slightly more robust.

A quick glance at the Google SERPs for mobile broadband reveal that the main providers - T-Mobile, Orange, Three and Vodafone - all feature heavily, and also show significant competition in the paid search results. Several mobile broadband comparison sites are already up and running, plus the ubiquitous Wikipedia.

Why Cheap Dedicated Servers Are Not THAT Inexpensive

May 27th, 2008

Many web hosting businesses these days tend to use the cruel strategy of attracting customers to their dedicated servers by offering what appears to be a very low and virtually unbeatable price.

However many clients soon end up with a string of nasty surprises when they realize that there are many other necessities, obviously not included in the low price, that they require for the smooth and efficient running of their dedicated servers. The result is that a client who signs the dotted line quickly finds out that what they have done is to actually tie themselves down to a rather expensive dedicated server solution. Their total bill runs sky high when they finally finish paying for all the other stuff, without which the dedicated server service will not run.

So before you commit yourself to that low price dedicated server, here are a few things you should take a closer look at.

One of the most common tricks is to give you hardware configuration and specifications that are inadequate and will require an upgrade to run your dedicated server. For example you can get offered an Intel Pentium 4 server that only has 256 MB of RAM. When you realize this later, you will find that the web host has priced the necessary upgrades on the high side.

Then there is the control panel issue. One can hardly run a dedicated server without a control panel. You will definitely require it for yourself and for the clients whom you will resell hosting services to. In most cases you will find that the license fee for this control panel will not be included in your low priced dedicated server offer. Different hosts have their different prices for the same control panels. For instance the Cpanel license will cost you $15/m at one host and a staggering $50/m at another.

The backup solution is yet another nasty surprise that most folks purchasing cheap dedicated servers soon encounter. Cheap hosts will tend to do one of two things. Either tie you to a high cost per GB back up solution or alternatively offer backup in volume slabs that you will hardly require, especially as a start-up enterprise. You will need to know what your back-up options are before you go for the low cost dedicated server you have in mind.

It would also be prudent for you to find out, before committing yourself, what your web host charges per hour for emergency system administration tasks and other technical services. It is impossible to run a dedicated server without adequate technical support and services and this is therefore a very crucial issue to settle long before you make your move.

Then there are the many small but important details that will enable you to quickly understand what folks usually mean when they say that you will often get exactly what you pay for. Some of these factors can end up being very expensive to you in more ways than one. For instance how will your web host react when there is hardware failure or serious network connection issues? This is a critical question because you can easily lose lots of potential clients gained at great cost, if your server goes down for more than a few hours.

In fact the key to your success revolves around the back-up technical service behind your dedicated server.

These are the issues you really need top look at closely before considering a low cost supplier for your dedicated server.

Wine Gift Basket

May 27th, 2008

Gift baskets are very popular among the people having good taste and culture. The concept of gift basket was coming from fruit basket; while there are some other outcomes of gift basket-such as wine gift basket.

Wine is very important item to celebrate any occasion like wedding, birthday, anniversary etc.It gives a pleasant realisation of life and forces you to sing and dance while you can speak and walk. Wine and music are indispensable parts of every party. Wine is the only aspect which turns an occasion into a party.

A wine gift basket is a collection of excellent wines which is gifted to exhilarate the mood of any party. A wine gift basket is an ideal gift for the anniversary purpose; this will rejuvenate the conjugal life of the couple and share their experiences of year’s long relationship. A peg of wine is a great way to express one’s gratitude and thankfulness. Wine warms up a chilled Christmas evening into sizzling one. Wine is also very suitable for Valentine’s Day celebration. Wine represents the concealed romance of people’s life and makes them express their hidden feelings.

There are some people who consider this as the “last resort” gift type. But things are not always the same as a lot of hard work, concept and expertise are involved in this. The sender of the wine gift basket must remember that this is a gift and it should not be designed on the basis of his/her choices. The sender must know the choice and taste of the receiver so that the sender get an appreciation from the receiver.

These baskets are excellent presentations for both men and women as they are convenient for any occasions such as weddings, anniversaries or birthdays. Generally it is considered that men like their drinks in a can or twist top bottle which is very wrong guess. There are any men who like to prefer wine of different flavours and packages. It is not true that men are always not eager to spend extra times to uncork the bottles; many of them may prefer to give some extra effort to uncork their

adored bottles. As per the women are concerned they prefer the wine accessories such as crystal glasses, ice-pots or decanter. It is always recommended for the sender to gift wine on the basis of receiver’s knowledge. If the receiver is not so accustomed with the wine then a guideline book to enjoy the gift is a great idea. Wine accessories can also be send if the receiver is an epicure of wine. In addition of Wine, some wine accessories can be appended. Accessories like crystal glasses, crorkscrews can be added to make it a worthwhile and warm.

As there are verities of wine gift baskets for different festivals and occasions, but choosing wine baskets for the proper occasions is very important.Winebaskets should not contain wine or wine accessories only, other delicious snacks such as chocolate, cheeses or cookies can be send. The prices of the wine gift baskets are also very important. The senders may have tasty and lucrative wine baskets range between $22 to $55.

A wine gift basket can be gifted to anyone-to friend, to immediate boss or to superior boss, to parents, senior people and last but not the least to your beloved.

Why do I need a webmaster?

May 26th, 2008

Being involved in an Internet business for quite sometime, I
have had many instances where I need to explain to a client why
exactly it is that they require a webmaster or web maintenance
and I’d like to put it into simple terms which are easy to
understand.

I get this question so often, “Why do I need a webmaster?”

If you are running an online business there are a few things you
need to understand. Once you begin to add functionality to a
website, it becomes more of a responsibility and a worry than
your ordinary website in HTML. As soon as you start adding
programming to your site in php, asp, etc, you begin to create
what I like to call “doors”. Once these doors are installed you
must always make sure that these doors remain locked. People
will try to unlock these doors, or “break in”. In most cases
they do this to access your server to send spam email. Sometimes
they just do it for fun. They are “hackers” and they really just
want to break your things. These programming systems which are
sometimes classifieds, forums, shopping carts, etc, become a
problem only because of hackers…. Each manufacturer must
update their versions of software when new hacks or
vulnerabilities are discovered…. Sometimes vulnerability
requires an upgrade. Sometimes your modifications need to be
done over. It’s never a put it there and it’s there forever
deal. Once you add functionality to a website, you must pay more
attention to what is happening on the servers and always making
sure no-one is opening the doors.

Another point that seems to be misunderstood is the fact that
data is valuable. One of my clients whom I built a shopping cart
for didn’t realize that it was important to have a webmaster
keeping an eye on things. This particular client thought that a
web site was similar to the digital voice recorder he bought at
RadioShack a few months back. He thought that whenever he needed
his website, that it would be right there where he left it
months ago. “Why do I need to watch it?” He thought, “I bought
it and put it on the shelf so I can use it next time I need it?”

Well this client in particular thought he did not need a
webmaster. “I’ll just send the orders out when they come in.” He
said. So one day the orders stop coming. This sparks a phone
call to my office. “I’m not getting any orders and I looked for
my website and it isn’t there.” A little checking into things
and I discovered that his credit card was expired, he wasn’t
checking his email, and his entire website including his
database was gone! The hosting account was past 60 days and the
MySql database was erased.

Here is where we begin to understand the value of data.

Every order that was placed, email that was saved, and product
that was photographed, was gone. Now you may be thinking that
surely he had backups, where are the backups? If he had a
webmaster, more than likely they would have been saving hard
copy backups periodically, just in case, but no, all he had was
what was backed up at the hosting company and after 60 days of
not paying your bill or answering your emails you can kiss them
good-bye.

The point that I would really like to make here is that once you
decide to go into business on the Internet, it is important to
take it seriously. Like anything else, what you put into the
business, is what you will get out.

I had to explain to him again, why it is that he needs a
webmaster. This time he listened with a bit more understanding.

Your Power Of REAL Concentration

May 26th, 2008

Did you ever stop to think what an important part your
thoughts, I mean real concentrated thoughts, play in your life?

The ability to concentrate all your attention is so important,
no matter what task or job you have to get done… as nothing
great or significant can be accomplished without proper effort
and concentration.

And almost all of us have some sort of difficulty in the
concentration of our attention.

Workers in business and industry, students in high school and
college, and even professors in universities, complain of the
same difficulty.

It is said that the power to concentrate all your attention is
vital as it stands at the very centre of most (if not all)
mental activity. No matter from what angle we view the mind, its
excellence always seems to depend upon the power to concentrate
all our attention.

Concentration may be defined as being that state of mind in
which the entire energies of the individual, physical as well as
mental, are focused upon the thing they are doing or thinking.
All actions and all thoughts NOT connected with what they are
doing or thinking are kept out of the mind…

If we examine a growing child, one of the first things we will
see is the power they have in them to “pay attention or to
notice things”.

When we examine the ability of normal adults we do so by means
of tests that require close concentration of attention, and we
regard anyone who is able to maintain close focused and
concentrated attention for long periods of time as a person of
strong mind or will.

So real concentration may be broken down into just 2 parts:

1. The voluntary focusing of all our power and attention in the
selecting of certain objects to be attended to.

2. And the ignoring of other objects which act as distractions.

But even in spite of our most careful provisions, there will
still be distractions which cannot be eliminated. For example,
you cannot stop the noise of planes flying over or cars driving
past while you are trying to work, plan or study.

And you cannot build a fence around the thoughts and focus of
your mind so as to keep out unwanted and irrelevant ideas… the
best thing you can do is to accept the inevitable that the
presence of some distractions will always exist, and to realise
that in order to concentrate and pay attention properly, it is
necessary to form the habit of ignoring these distractions.

You can simply start out by making a strong determined effort to
ignore all distractions… practise ignoring them, and try your
best not to let a slip occur.

Also at the same time, try to develop interest in the object you
are concentrating all your attention on, because we tend to pay
more attention to those things in which we are most interested.

It’s easy for any one to say, “concentrate”… but you need to
know exactly how to concentrate. Remember that to concentrate is
merely the act of applying your entire body and mind, to the
task or action in hand.

Every effort of the mind, whether it’s to…

* Perceive something

* Recollect something

* Associate something

* Imagine something

* Even to judge something

Must all involve some concentration of the faculties of the mind
upon that particular action, task or act, whatever it may be!

As you start to develop a firm interest in your field of work or
study, and as you develop the habit of ignoring distractions -
you will be able to concentrate your powers of attention with
less and less effort.

Another important fact to note is that as you develop the power
to select objects for the concentration of all your attention,
you also develop (at the same time) other mind power processes
− you will improve the ability to memorize and recall much
more, to fine tune and manage better your time and effort.

And also the power to control your future thoughts and
actions…

In short “developing your power to concentrate and focus all
your attention means developing power in all the mental
processes”. With that being said, we want to finish by giving
you,

The 2 TOP Keys Of Concentration

For every one of us, concentration will always mean,

1. Selecting and focusing on what is most important to us, and
disregarding what is not… and also knowing which tasks and
jobs have top priority.

2. You must identify for yourself what is most important and
essential to you - and try to filter out everything else.

These are the two main steps towards developing strong
concentration… recognising the essential… and leaving out
the non-essential.

Dog Obedience Training

May 26th, 2008

Dog obedience training begins with the owner. There are several tips to keep in mind before starting any dog obedience training. First of all, understand that dogs have an attention span of no more than ten minutes. Training routines, therefore, should be limited to this time frame. Secondly, all training should be positive. Reward your dog for correct behavior and always end your obedience training sessions on a positive note.

Training for a dog is similar to going to work for a human; if you do not get anything good out of it, you will stop working. Having fun is a big plus! Third, remember to be consistent. For example, if you feed your dog from your plate, don’t expect him not to beg when company arrives.

Work with him each day reinforcing basic skills and behaviors. Use the same commands and hand signals each time. When his behaviors slip, look at how you may be responsible. Next, teach the action before labeling it with a command. For example, before you say, “Fido, sit,” show him with the technique below what a sit is. Then, reward him saying “good sit” when he is in a sit. After a while, you will be able to say “sit,” and he will know what that means.

Finally, remember that you will get more cooperation when you are positive and patient. Instead of forcing your dog into a sit position, bring a tasty treat above and then back over his head until he sits back to get it. Reward him not only with the treat, but with lots of praise. These general rules will help any dog owner apply the basic dog obedience training command with success.

Let’s look at these basic dog obedience training commands. We just learned sit. From a sitting position, lower a treat straight down under the dog’s neck, when the dog bends down to accept the treat pull it slowly out so that the dog can comfortably lie down. In the beginning, you may have to hold his butt down to let him know that you do not want him to get out of the sitting position. Gentle guidance during the first stages is okay. Reward when your dog has all four elbows on the floor.

It is important that your dog have a releasing command such as “Okay.” When you open doors, give him food, or let him in/out of the car, use this releasing command to signal permission. After a weak of hearing this word, practice his wait at a door, not allowing the dog to pass without hearing the releasing command.

Come is also an important dog obedience training command. Using a long lead, let Fido wander off and then call his name and begin reeling in. When he gets close to you, say “Come.” Try this repeatedly until Fido loves the command “Come” and you are no longer having to reel.

The Service Level Agreement - The Glass is Never (Completely) Full

May 25th, 2008

Positive or negative thinking is sometimes visualized by a person expression his or her vision about the level of a glass; being either half FULL or half EMPTY.

Try to remember a situation in which you thought you had a deal with someone, but in the end, there wasn’t such a deal, only an intention. For example:

  • You had stored 900 Mb at one of your free internet mail providers. You stored important documents and the next time you logged in it appears that they were no longer there. There was however 1Gb of free space on your account.
  • You are offering an internet service to your clients, they login to your tool environment, they pass the credit card payments and all of a sudden your server is down. You received the payment, but they didn’t find their service…

A service is — in difference with a product — a facility that is provided by someone, or a company which support the other (Company) in achieving its process. This (primary) process could be selling or to producing a product.

A special feature of a service is that — again in difference with a product — it is maximized; whatever effort you put ‘behind’ the service, there is one LEVEL that cannot be succeeded (and that is the level of a 100 percent). This is sometimes regarded as a frustrating feature and therefore called a dis-satisfier. If you provide the right level, you have just done what you should have done. Are you underperforming this level, than you could be in a mayor problems.

Unless you have thought about setting up a Service Level Agreement (SLA). This SLA describes the level of the glass under different circumstances and the consequences when the level is below the accepted criteria.

This provides both parties a clear definition when the glass is half full or half empty. The next step is to manage this agreement by means of service level management. And that is just another step to take.

6 Reasons Why Complaining Customers are Golden

May 25th, 2008

With Some Tips on How to Respond

Tt has probably happened to you if you own your own online business. You get an email or even a phone call from someone who is upset or unhappy with this or that about your business. Most of us don’t really care to deal with whiners or complainers, but, if you’ll just take a deep breath and take some time to think about it, many times they offer you some solid insight into your business that you would not have seen. If you just react to their complaint without taking the position that their concern might be legitimate, you will lose many valuable insights and may very likely lose a customer. After all, they are on the receiving end of your business, and you can’t disregard this. Whether they are just irritated or are really upset for some reason, you need to be prepared for how to respond. Take a deep breath and keep the following in mind the next time you have a run-in with a disgruntled or upset customer.

1. They often identify potential problem areas. The cause of most customer complaints is failed expectations. It could have been something you said, or failed to say. It could have been something you did or didn’t do. Or maybe your customer is simply confused. Whatever the case, customers are usually unhappy because they expected something from you that didn’t occur, and from their perspective, needs to be remedied. If the cause of their dissatisfaction is reasonable, guess what? They just helped you see something you missed, and now you can take care of it and make your business even better. And THAT is a blessing. It’s best to make sure you make things right by giving your customer what they expected (if it is reasonable) and then do something else - give an extra gift of value to your customer and a genuine THANK YOU for bringing it to your attention. Their jaw will usually hit the floor. You would be absolutely amazed at how this will turn even the most dissatisfied complainer into an extremely loyal and perhaps even a lifetime (and happy) customer.

2. The complaining customer represents others who won’t say a word. If you have a customer who makes a complaint about something related to your business, you should assume the there are others who probably had the same issue, but never said a word to you. It’s a well-established fact that the majority of your customers generally won’t utter a peep. They typically prefer to avoid confrontation, and so they will just leave and start doing business with one of your competitors. You want to avoid this like the plague. The best way to do that is to make sure you ask your customers regularly for their candid feedback. And then be sure to make adjustments and let them know what you did.

3. A complaint is often a wake-up call for what your customers really need. It’s one thing for you to figure out what you think your customers need, but it’s even better when they tell you. Since most customer complaints are based on failed expectations, a complaint is an excellent opportunity to assess how well you are actually meeting the needs of your customers. If more than one customer makes the same suggestion or complaint, guess what? That’s a clue you probably should take a closer look at an issue. You need to figure out if you need to tweak your sales message, your product or service, or the way you provide service and support. Whatever it is, its bound to improve your business because you will be responding to the stated needs of your customers.

4. When they are done complaining, they will talk with others. It’s SO important to remember that the way you handle a customer complaint is not the end of the matter! In fact, it’s actually much closer to the beginning. A complaint is a tremendous opportunity if you handle the situation tactfully. This is because if you listen and respond to a complaint by fixing what was wrong, and send your customer off with a gift and a thank you - they will tell at least 10 other people about their experience. That’s called word of mouth advertising - the most powerful form of advertising on the planet - and that’s where your opportunity lies. And though it may not result in more customers for you, it just might - and in any event, it sure can’t hurt. You need to keep in mind that this door swings both ways. If you fail to resolve a complaint, they will talk with even MORE people about it! This can cause great damage to your online reputation - a mortal blow to the trust you seek to cultivate with your customers and prospects, which, by the way, is the most important online commodity you have.

5. customer is far more important to your business than a prospect. With all the emphasis most online business owners put into marketing, it’s easy to overlook this simple fact. A focus on marketing can be a distraction from investing more time on and with your customers. If you treat a complaining customer with respect, tact, care, and genuine understanding - you might wind up keeping them in the end - especially if they believe that their concerns are appreciated and will be corrected immediately. Don’t forget, it’s FAR less expensive (both financially and in many other ways) to keep an existing customer than it is to find a new one. You might even want to follow up and tell your customer what actions you intend to take as a result of their complaint or suggestion. And then be sure to follow-up with them again and tell them what you actually did. If they see that kind of response from you, what will they think? They will know you value their feedback - and for many customers - that makes all the difference - even if you fail to remedy the issue completely. Keep in mind that ANY time you have an opportunity to connect in a positive way by giving a customer positive news is great for your business, and puts them in a better frame of mind towards you - which means they will be more likely to think of you the next time they need a solution you have to offer. Because you’ve effectively communicated that you are responsive to their needs.

6. Fixing complaints removes excuses to not buy from you. If you invest the time and energy to eliminate the cause(s) of failed expectations your customers come up with, guess what you’ve just done? You’ve just taken away more roadblocks that might otherwise prevent them from buying from you. So, my motto is, I want to hear all about it when my customers are unhappy! Because the more I hear, the more I can take action to demonstrate that what they want is important to me. Working to eliminate obstacles on their behalf causes my customers to see me as one of their solution providers - and ultimately, their BEST choice.

Choosing Sex Toys and Caring For Them

May 25th, 2008

Intended usage

Do you intend to use your sex toy by yourself or with your partner? Choosing a sex toy and using it together with your partner will foster better intimacy, understanding and openness. Some sex toys are used only for solo play, while some such as love swings can only be used with a partner.

Stimulation preference

Phallic sex toys can be designed for penetration or clitoral stimulation. Some can do both. Women are aroused differently and knowing which erogenous zones stimulate you more can help in choosing the right sex toys. For penetrative stimulation, the shaft type vibrators or dildos are a good choice. For clitoral stimulation, we recommend the most popular rabbit vibrator range. The rabbit range serves a dual purpose, penetration and clitoral stimulation. The base of the shaft has a bunny ear shaped soft like material designed to gently massage the clitoris while the shaft is inserted in the vagina. Rabbit vibrators are the most popular sex toys the world over and we highly recommend that you shop around for one.

Sound

Some sex toys like vibrators can be a bit noisy. You don’t want to rouse your neighbors and housemates, do you? For this, you can consider variable speed vibrators or vibrators that emit a low level of noise.

Material or texture

Sex toys generally come in porous or non-porous material. Porous materials such as cyberskin are extremely lifelike. They feel very realistic and are often molded after the real thing. Non-porous materials such as plastic, soft PVC, silicone and glass are smooth and come in varying textures. Either way, they should be used with lots of lubrication. Porous materials will require a bit more cleaning as bacteria can grow between the pores. Water and soap will be enough for non-porous materials.

Style

Everybody has a personal preference when it comes to color, shape, size, studded or smooth and elongated. It’s a matter of preference. Choose from a variety of characteristics including those that glow in the dark.

Wet and dry use

Are you planning to use your toy in the bath? Many people have discovered how much fun they can have in the bath. Waterproof toys such as the rubber duck or waterproof dildos make good companions.

Portability

Do you want to take your vibrator on the road with you or are you planning on keeping it at home? There are small battery powered vibrators such as the Pocket Rocket which can fit into the palm of your hand.

Cleaning and caring for your Sex Toys

Since sex toys are used on the most sensitive parts of your body, it makes sense to keep it well cleaned and cared for. With a few simple steps, you can prolong the life of your toy.

Lubricants

Water- and silicone-based lubricants are safe to use with sex toys. Avoid using oil- or petroleum-based lubricants as they break down latex material. Vaseline or olive oil are for external use only and are great for massaging. Never use oil-based lubricants for any penetration as they can cause infections if not properly cleaned.

Cleaning

Non-porous materials are smooth and warm water and soap usually does the trick. If needed, silicone sex toys can be sterilized by boiling it for 3 to 5 minutes. Porous materials such as cyberskin and rubber require a bit more care as bacteria can hide within the pores. Avoid using soap on cyberskin to maintain the texture. Instead, rinse with lots of warm water or sterilize with alcohol. It is best air-dried and sprinkled with cornstarch or talcum to maintain the smooth surface. To keep all your toys clean and ready to use, you can also pickup a care & cleaning kit.

Condoms

Condoms can be placed over sex toys so it can be safely shared with multiple partners. They also make cleaning that much easier. Rubber dildos are porous materials which must be sterilized if shared with multiple partners. Otherwise, use a condom over rubber dildos.

Storing

Try to store sex toys within reach of the bed. Nothing is more frustrating than interrupting foreplay and having to walk across the room to dig out the toy from a secret hidden spot. With that being said, sex toys should be stored in protective casing or wrapped in a piece of cloth, away from prying eyes. There are several novelty items available such as the Hide Your Vibe pillow to discreetly store your sex toys.
