Shop smart Secrets for a healthy lifestyle

January 5th, 2008

A big part of enjoying healthier eating is buying healthier
foods, and that means making smart choices where it matters most
- at the supermarket. Choosing the freshest, healthiest foods is
an important first step toward making healthy and delicious
meals your whole family will love.

In general, most supermarkets are laid out with the healthiest,
most nutritious foods around the perimeter of the store. That is
where most stores locate their produce section, their dairy
section, their meat counter, and the like. Of course, the middle
aisles of the grocery store also contain nutritious foods, such
as canned and frozen vegetables, whole grain cereals and more.

And of course each shelf of the grocery store also contains both
good and bad choices for healthy eating. For instance, the
cereal aisle is home to both the healthy, home grain cereal, and
those cereals that contain more sugar than corn. In many cases,
the difference will be obvious from the packaging, while at
other times you will need to read the nutritional information
carefully to ensure the food is healthy for your family.

As a matter of fact, learning to read nutritional labels is one
of the most important skills any health oriented shopper must
learn. This government mandated labels contain a wealth of
information if you know what to look for. Not only do
nutritional labels contain vital information on calorie counts,
fat grams and sodium content, but they contain detailed
information on the percentage of each vitamin an mineral a
serving contains.

When looking at nutritional labels, however, pay careful
attention to the portion size listed. This is particularly
important when looking at calories, fat grams and the amount of
sodium. For instance, a serving of juice is generally 8 ounces,
while the average juice glass at your home may be 12 or even 16
ounces. It is important to carefully look at serving size, and
to do the mental calculation necessary to reflect how much of
each product will actually be consumed at one sitting.

When shopping for healthy foods, it is usually better to opt for
les processed foods. For instance, 100% fruit juice would be
better than a fruit juice blend that may contain as little as 5%
or 10% fruit juice. And plain frozen vegetables would be
healthier than vegetables in a butter sauce. When shopping for
meat, try to buy fresh meat whenever possible. Frozen meat
products, or those already seasoned, heat and eat products,
often contain unhealthy ingredients as well as preservatives.

When it comes to dairy products, it is best to buy low fat and
non fat varieties when at all possible. The one exception to
this rule is feeding babies and young children. Their growing
bodies need the fat and calories contained in whole milk
products, but adults and older children are better served by low
fat alternatives.

When choosing canned soups, there are a number of fat free and
low sodium varieties. Try to choose these soups for a healthier
lifestyle. Other high protein, low calorie soup choices include
black bean soup, lentil soup and split pea soup. These healthy
soups are good sources of protein, fiber and folate.

Ethnic foods, such as Mexican and Chinese, can be excellent
sources of healthy meals, and the traditional ways of preparing
such foods are generally very healthy. It is important to stay
as authentic as possible when choosing and preparing Mexican,
Asian, Middle Eastern and Italian food. This will help guarantee
both great taste and healthy eating. For instance, traditional
salsa is an excellent, low calorie, and nutritious dip, and the
traditional Mexican black bean dip is usually fat free.

Seasonings can be an excellent way to spice up healthy cooking
without adding additional fat and calories. Herbs and spices are
a great way to add zest to any meal, and starting an herb garden
of your own is a great way to save both time and money while
providing fresh tasting, healthy meals for your family. When
buying spices in the grocery store, be especially careful about
sodium content. Read the label carefully, since the first
ingredient on many bottled spices is actually salt (another
great reason to start that herb garden).

Valentines Gift Ideas

December 12th, 2007

It’s that time of year again when we are all in search of the
ultimate Valentines Gift ideas for that special day. Valentines
Day comes year after year and let’s face it most of us are
reduced to uninspired purchases such as heart shaped chocolates,
flowers, or we get really desperate and buy the all popular red
teddy bear. You’re not alone we have all made the mistake of
repeat gift giving for no other reason than…last minute
shopping.

Last minute shopping is at an all time high for most occasions
including Valentines day and Christmas. Statistics revealed that
the majority of Americans only start their shopping at least two
days before the big day. Does this mean that we are living
mechanically, barely getting through the daily grind, or are we
just simply uninspired?

Most of us live in a blur of events, a hustle and bustle that
weaves our existence from one day to the next. Work, school,
kids, programs, birthdays, holidays…there’s so much going on
that we live uninspired lives.

Well it’s never too late. You can still pull it together if you
allow yourself to be inspired with new and original Valentines
gift ideas. Start by taking some time to really absorb the
richness of the holiday. It’s a day of love, of appreciation for
those we care for. It’s a day set aside from all other days when
we can stand up to the plate and really declare our love for
that special someone.

You need a plan before you go into a store and succumb to buying
something you didn’t give any thought to. Think about the one
you love and how that person makes you feel. Your gift should
reflect that. Think about what that person values, what they
treasure and what will put a smile on their face.

Here are a few Valentines gift ideas that might inspire you to
reach a little further to make somebody’s day one they will
never forget.

1. Write a love letter and attach it to your present -
this way you’re not just signing your name to something someone
else wrote. (If you want to add to that you can spray the
envelope with a romantic scent to create the mood).

2. Make a coupon book - you can get as creative as you
want!

3. Valentines Day treasure hunt - leave notes with clues
your special someone can follow that will lead them to a special
treasure.

4. Put together a basket - with a theme of course, filled
with treasures like candles, wine and other trinkets.

5. Turn a picture into a painting - you can have a
painting created from a photo done right at your local photo
developing studio.

6. Valentine Love Plaque - cards gets stored in drawers
and boxes but a plaque hangs on a wall or shelf where it can be
read everyday.

Whatever way you choose to celebrate the holiday make it count
for something special. Get inspired, be inventive, and most
importantly, give from the heart!

Why do some people start stuttering

November 27th, 2007

The are many reasons why a person may develop a stutter, and I
am going to explain a few of them in this article.

We learn to talk by observing the people around us. This happens
from birth and when our vocal chords are fully formed we start
to speak. If a member of our close family has a stuttering
problem, there is a good chance that we could pick up their bad
habits and also start to stutter. I have met many people who
stutter, who inform me that somebody in their family also
suffers with stuttering and for some reason it is normally their
father.

Many parents have stated to me, that even though they do have a
stutter, that they have always been able to speak fluently to
and around their child. Unfortunately children listen to
conversations when we least expect it (when we think they are in
bed, for example) and are likely to hear the stutter at various
time, like during a phone call.

How a parent reacts when their child first starts to stutter is
very important. If they are calm and patient and do not
over-react, there is a good chance the child won’t panic and
worry. If the parent reacts shocked and responds sharply, with
words to the effect of, get your words out boy, this can have a
very damaging effect. The child is likely to panic and is more
than likely to stutter again out of nerves and tension.

The third reason people start to stutter is a response to a
shock reaction. I have in the past number of years come into
contact with people who have started stuttering after a serious
car crash, after being mugged and even after giving birth.

The fourth reason is copying someone else who has a stutter. I
have heard in a number of cases where children have started to
stutter after copying a friend at school. This friend had a
stutter, and they copied them as if it was some kind of game. In
one story I heard, a fluent man joined the navy, accompanying
him on the ship was a man who had a stutter. During one trip
overseas, the fluent person constantly mocked and mimicked the
stutterer, and to his horror, by the end of the trip could not
stop stuttering himself. He eventually ended up killing himself,
so the story goes.

Resume WorkShop — Resume Content Is King

November 24th, 2007

We’ll now take a good look at how to build the heading, job objectives, summary of qualifications, and work history sections of a résumé.

It really goes without saying that it’s vital to build a résumé heading that gives all the necessary contact information:

Legal name

Address
Including Street number and name
Apartment designation, if that’s appropriate

City, state and zip code – include zip + 4 if you are able, as it facilitates faster mail delivery, and also indicates to your reader that you are thorough and detail oriented
Home phone

Cell phone, if applicable

Fax number, if you have one

Office number, if you can reasonably expect a certain degree of privacy

Email address

Avoid personal email addresses that carry inside jokes or strange and unusual nicknames. It’s easy to understand that someone would hesitate to email you about a substantial management position if your email address contains nicknames like “daddy’s little girl” or “Alabama horny toad” at domination lounge dot com. Take advantage of any of the many sources of free email addresses and establish one email account that you use for personal business communications. Keep the address simple, as in jsmith at geo dot com.

On the subject of a Job Objectives section under the heading at the top of the résumé, the experts we polled were mixed in their reactions. Half the experts, lead by Peter Newfield at Career Résumés dot Com, advocated that, unless you are completely changing industries, or you have graduated from a degree program within the last couple of years, an Objective statement is inappropriate, and a waste of the reader’s time. The other half of the experts, lead by Susan Ireland of Susan Ireland dot com, firmly maintain that the Objective statement is in fact helpful to the reader, as it immediately informs several of a prospective employer’s expectations:

What position you are looking for
To whom this document should be directed, in the event it will be read first by a gatekeeper
What level of responsibility you are seeking
The perspective from which to interpret all the information on the resume
What we believe is most effective is a virtual compromise between the two opinions: including a descriptive job title underneath your name in the heading, which will convey the same information

Geraldine Smith
Senior Marketing Vice President
Josiah Bartlett
8 Year Veteran, Presidency of the United States

In order to inspire the interest necessary to generate an invitation for a job interview, all the experts urged jobseekers to create a summary of qualifications that makes the résumé stand out from the crowd. The Summary of Qualifications lists, Internet Keyword style, the features (such as skillsets, experience, outstanding achievements) you most want the hiring authority to see immediately. The Summary of Qualifications goes immediately below the heading of the résumé, or just following the statement of your objective, should you decide to include one.

As to the Professional Experience section of the résumé, design a work history listing that shows off your experience:

List the company name and location (city, state)
List the dates of your employment, including month and year
Prominently display your job title

Instead of a description of your job duties, or at least in addition to them, include key accomplishments you achieved in that position
The accomplishments you include need to be quantifiable and verifiable
Include any relevant awards received while in the position in question
Finish out your reverse chronology with and Education and Training section. When referencing your college and university studies, list the name of the school, city and state, the degree, and the field of study in which it was earned. Unless you’ve earned your degree recently, say in the last three years, it is considered superfluous to include your graduation date. Also list any certifications, specialized training, technical or industry training that you’ve completed in this section as well.

Finally, in this digital age, most experts recommend a section entitled Computer Skills. Be sure to list the standard suites of office software with which you are proficient, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Netscape, etc. Also include any specialized software packages with which you are familiar, as they may well be in demand from industry to industry:

Macromedia Dream Weaver
Adobe Photoshop
Quark Express
Auto CAD

That about does it for the necessary content on your résumé. According to the experts, do not list your references, do not include personal information (such as your social security number or marital status), don’t even put a picture of yourself. Keep it short, sweet, and to the point.

Top 7 Ways to Profit from Foreign Trade

October 17th, 2007

Here are seven excellent ways to earn income from
international trade.

1. Importing: Retail store owners can find additional
products to sell from foreign manufacturers, distributors,
and other suppliers. You may even decide to go exclusively
into the import business and become a wholesale distributor.

2. Exporting: Manufacturers can find new customers for their
products in foreign countries. You could also become an Export
Management Agent. Arrange for other domestic companies to sell
their products to foreign corporations and earn a commission.

3. Licensing: Consider becoming a licensing agent. Earn
royalties by arranging for foreign corporations to manufacture
and sell the products of domestic companies.

4. Finder`s Fees: You can earn fees from domestic companies
for finding foreign buyers (or for finding suitable imports
from foreign suppliers). You can also earn fees from foreign
companies for finding domestic corporations that will buy their
products (or for finding suitable suppliers and products from
domestic corporations).

5. Drop Shipping: Visualize receiving an order from a customer
based in a foreign country and not having to be bothered with
shipping and handling the product. No customs declarations or
brokers are required by you. This is because your drop ship
supplier is handling those details.

6. Mail Order: Add a mail order service to your existing
business operation. Manufacturers, retail stores, and other
businesses can increase their sales by using this additional
method of selling that is very conducive to international trade.

7. Internet Marketing: You can also extend your reach to worldwide
customers by means of the Internet. Methods of obtaining foreign
business include affiliate marketing, online auctions, online
stores, and websites.

Get It Done-OR 3 Ways To Advance Your Goal

October 11th, 2007

1. WORK WITH THE END IN MIND- OR FOCUS ON SUCCESS

“Beginning with the end in mind is the endowment of imagination
. If you are the programmer, write the program”, says, goal
expert- Stephen R. Covey. Goals help us to focus, and the
quality of our attention is enhanced by a having a project so
cool and interesting that we can’t help but make a leap. Let’s
say, you want to organize your workspace so that everyone is
inspired to do their best work. The in-between steps: like
ergonomic concerns & planning comfortable lighting, in-and-of
itself can seem mundane, but joined together they name a bigger
accomplishment and by doing so, asks us to spice up our
expectations & upgrade who we are. Focus on success & keep in
mind how you want things to end up–And you’ll soon enough be
successful.

a. name the accomplishment

b. give your project a title

c. identify upbeat reasons for pursuing your goal

d. what needs to be done by when

e. how would you like things to end up

2. RAISE THE BAR-OR SHOOT FOR THE MOON Define greatness,
challenge the limits, double the goal, or try something
new…These are just some of the sentiments that put our plans
into action and move us towards revolutionary results. Look
around and you can see the the very essence of commonplace
activities being tested and re-imagined. Such as schools
re-defining Physical Education by bringing in activities
“ranging from kickboxing to more esoteric offerings like tai chi
and yoga”. And with the introduction of Blogs an international
conversation is in full swing with millions of links and a
central clearing house inspired by immediacy, intrigue and
tension. Raising the bar on a project can simply mean taking one
extra step, having an allegiance to a weird idea, or devoting to
a regular practice. Commit to a goal in a meaningful way,
personalize it & make it your own, and then watch an otherwise
sleepy project wake up and give way to a new found energy,
creativity and distinction .“Shoot for the moon. Even if you
miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

a. double the goal

b. challenge the limits

c. create a regular practice

d. raise your standards, values or beliefs

e. make it a game

3. GO THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE-OR SHOW ME THE SHORTCUT
Sometimes a goal deserves a break. TIME MAGAZINE reported that
after 8 hours of sleep you’d be more than twice as likely to
find a shortcut for solving a problem. Suggesting that taking it
easy is good for the brain, and what’s good for the brain is
good for the overall psyche and soul. Are you doing too much,
not getting nourished and being exhausted? Well perhaps its time
to consider another path. Don’t re-invent the wheel. Pick up a
book written by an expert, join a group that’s geared around
your project, sign up for an informational newsletter , or ask
someone to buddy up & help. For instance, if I was writing a
screen-play and struggling with a self imposed deadline, I could
simplify my project just by signing up for a writing class. What
with weekly writing tasks & in-class exercises this alone would
expedite the development of my script. Another over looked short
cut is to consider smaller steps. The smaller the increments the
easier the goal. Deng Ming-Dao, writes in EVERYDAY TAO, “An inch
in one direction, then an inch in another already makes a span
of 2 inches. Gradually we can improve on that.” Go the path of
least resistance, it’s a gift of energy.

a. don’t reinvent the wheel-find someone who’s done it before

b. slow down or change the pace

c. keep to minimum daily standards

d. write everything down–loose ideas vs. lost ideas

e. the smaller the increments the easier the goal

Top 7 Tips For Writing Your Marketing Plan

October 7th, 2007

A lot of people are at a loss when it comes to deciding how to approach the marketing plan process and how to stay within time and budget constraints. To make for a less stressful marketing plan process, keep these 7 tips in mind:

Think Strategy First

An overall marketing strategy drives many decisions. If you first identify general goals, choosing appropriate marketing programs for a small business plan becomes much easier.

Decide Format

Putting together a general outline and deciding how you will publish the plan can help you better visualize steps you need to take. Examples are (a) a full, detailed report including Executive Summary, the plan itself, and back-up data, (b) a single summary sheet, or (c) something in between. Size and structure of the small business can help determine the scope of the plan.

Set Aside Time

A good, strategic marketing plan requires a certain amount of analysis. Early stages in the process go smoother with minimal interruptions. Make it easier for those working on the plan to concentrate by setting aside “closed” time during early planning stages. In a busy, small business environment, this can be accomplished by working during off hours or putting aside a short time - 30 minutes to an hour - each day.

Brainstorm

New, creative ideas flow more freely when people are not inhibited by preconceptions. Hold a brainstorming session, with two rules: (a) there are no bad ideas and (b) everyone’s ideas carry equal weight.

Shorten The List

Implementation suffers severely when there is an overload of marketing projects, especially in small businesses with a small or one-person marketing department.. The list of potential projects generated in the brainstorming session can be shortened by concentrating on those likely to be the most profitable and those that take advantage of the company’s internal strengths.

Make The Plan Flexible

Business does not operate in a vacuum, so your plan needn’t exist in one. For example, the business environment may change during the year or additional marketing opportunities may arise. Building in flexibility to adjust throughout the year can avoid the pitfall of continuing down an unproductive path.

Have Measurements In Place

Knowing if and how well a program works can help you identify opportunities for improvement. In your marketing plan or in back-up documents, set explicit goals and measurements.

To VoIP or not to VoIP ?

October 4th, 2007

Unless you live under a rock somewhere in Antarctica, you
already know VoIP is an abbreviation for voice over Internet
protocol, also known as broadband telephone. That being said,
should one use VoIP ? How does it work ? What are some benefits
? Are there any problems with VoIP ?

To answer this question we first need to know how broadband
telephone works. First and foremost VoIP works on a broadband
Internet connection like high speed cable or dsl, a DTA (
digital terminal adapter ), and just about any average home
telephone will do.

Most long distance telephone calls are carried over the Internet
(yes, traditional calls). The DTA box transmits and receives all
calls directly to the Internet, bypassing the telephone company
all together, consequently; bypassing all the taxes and sir
charges too.

With most VoIP services, the big benefit for the consumer is
significant cost savings. Service ranges from between nine and
thirty dollars a month depending on the plan you choose. Many
VoIP companies offer flat rate calling, and some for under
twenty dollars a month. See
http://www.cheapest-service.com/broadband-phone/

As with any new technology, there are still a few bugs to be
worked out. Some VoIP services don’t offer 911 service in all
areas. The FCC has passed legislation to have VoIP companies
make 911 service available to all consumers by November 2005.

The DTA only connects to one telephone. A fix is plugging the
outgoing DTA line into the network interface telephone box
outside. Unplug the telephone companies line and plug in your
own. If the telephone company tries to reconnect, it might fry
your DTA box. Put a warning sign up.

This technique will propagate the VoIP signals throughout all
the lines in your home. Another quirk is when Internet service
or electricity goes out so does your broadband telephone. If you
don’t already have cell-phone service, a cheap pre-paid works
nicely as a back up.

All in all, my experience has been VoIP is worth what you pay
for it. Knowing the bugs and their fixes can lead to substantial
cost savings in telephone service. Even if one doesn’t
completely replace their traditional telephone company, VoIP is
an excellent choice for a second telephone line or even just as
a long distance plan.

VoIP could even be a good excuse to upgrade your dial-up
Internet connection to high speed Internet. The reasoning behind
it being, the savings in telephone service could offset the rise
in the cost to upgrade to broadband Internet service. You be the
judge.

Bookkeeping Techniques For “Morons”

October 1st, 2007

Please don’t think I am calling you a “moron” to hurt your feelings in any way. I was a moron when I first started setting up my files. You have to force yourself to do it NOW — right at the beginning! Many of a business has collapsed simply because they lacked organization in their basic accounting business practices. Don’t be one of them!

As a small business you don’t have to really do much in the beginning. Here is how to set up your files from ground zero:

1. Take out a hanging file folder and a label of any kind. (Hanging folders and labels for them can be purchased at K-Mart, Wal-Mart and any office supply store.)

2. Type or hand print “Receipts” on the label and place it on the hanging folder.

3. Now, place 5 MANILA file folders inside the hanging file folder (which you labeled “Receipts”) and label each of the manila file folders with the following headings:

a. Advertising
b. Postage
c. Office Supplies
d. Utilities and Rent for the Office
e. Miscellaneous

You now have one large hanging file folder with 5 separate manila file folders inside it. Carefully place your hanging file folder in your metal file cabinet or cardboard banker’s box. (A banker’s box can be purchased at any office supply store also and normally cost around $4.)

Now, wasn’t that easy? Some of you reading this will think that I am attempting to insult your intelligence. This is NOT my intention. This report is broken down in a simple, step-by-step way so everybody can understand it — regardless of their previous knowledge and experience. Remember, some people have never worked in an office their entire life. What seems simple and accepted to some of us, may be something another person would never have known.

Okay, let’s go back to where we were. You now have one master file completed and we’re ready to make another just like it. This time we’ll name the hanging file folder “Income” and label 3 manila folders inside it with the following headings: a. Completed and Shipped Orders b. Inquiries and Correspondence c. Open Orders Still Pending

See how easy? From now on, you simply make another folder as the need arrives and you’re files will always be easy to maintain. (Once you get this concept down pat — you can easily think about getting a computer. A computer organizes its information in the SAME manner. Believe me — this same system works! You’ll be amazed at how many mistakes it will help you prevent.)

Yes — bookkeeping is a very simple process. All you have to do is keep the system going. For instance, every order that I process, I completely finish before moving on to the next order. Example:

1. Mail is received and opened. As each piece is opened it is placed into individual piles. Orders with pre-payment are placed in one pile, information and daily correspondence in another, and so forth.

2. Each order that has been pre-paid for is processed first — with each one being processed individually to completion. (That means it is in an envelope, a label typed out and the completed order is ready to be mailed at the post office.)

3. During the process, the “date,” “amount of check or payment” and “product ordered” is recorded on the outside of the envelope — making sure the customer’s full name, address and telephone number (if available) is on the envelope too.

4. Just before closing up the office for the evening, the envelopes are then keyed into the database on our computer (you can substitute a computer for the hanging files in the beginning.) We record all the information that was written on the envelopes during the processing of the order. (Don’t think you will remember “what” the order was. That thinking will open you up to make human errors.)

If you operate an Internet business, you are going to use computer and email a lot. You need do following:

1. Create different folder in your computer, name it with different resources: marketing, search engine tools, articles and tips, ebooks, ezine lists, picture files…

2. Create folders in your email account, you can save useful emails for different purpose: training, sales, purchase receipt, new customers, prospects… As your business grows, your understanding and abilities will grow also. At that time you can grow into a more sophisticated means of keeping the books.

In the meantime — keep good records. They are the lifeblood of any business and can eventually make or break you. You’ll thank yourself in the long run.
