Custom Chopper Kit

September 14th, 2007

There has been an absolutely phenomenal growth of interest in custom chopper motorcycles over the recent years along with an increased price tag that these custom choppers are being sold at!

A really nice looking motorcycle, complete with beefed up engine, 6-speed transmission and custom paint job is way out of the reach of the average Joe. If you don’t have serious wads of cash, a benevolent granny or a clean sheet on your credit file then there is probably not much chance of getting a brand new custom chopper motorcycle out of the show room. So what can you do if you are hopelessly in love with the chopper dream and without the financial resources to back you up? Well, why not consider building your own custom chopper, based on a factory standard motorcycle and get a custom chopper kit fitted.

You can convert your Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, or Yamaha Motorcycle into a Custom Chopper in one day, using tried and tested chopper kit equipment. Make sure you use a safe and reliable system to transform your motorcycle into a custom chopper using the standard factory frame.

An approved system will actually change the steering head angle on your frame without cutting or welding. Use a patented set of triple trees, bearings, fork tubes and offset components that provide the correct geometry. It has been stated that the most important aspect of a chopper motorcycle is the trail dimension because a motorcycle that simply relies on a raked or adjustable tree cannot achieve more then 5 or 6 degrees of additional rake before the trial becomes so small that the handling becomes dangerous. A chopper kit that is a bolt-on system eliminates the guesswork by providing your chopper with the same trail as the standard factory motorcycle.

What does this actually mean to the not so mechanically minded biker? Dude, it will look great & ride totally safe. This is a very important aspect to consider. Don’t go cutting, welding or hacking away at a factory built motorcycle as this will result in a dangerous wreck and not that much wanted, cool looking, head turning dream machine you are really looking for. We all need to ride safe to keep riding!

2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000 vs 2006 Yamaha YZF-R1

September 9th, 2007

Buying a motorbike can be very hard at times. One probable reason for this is the numerous brands that all promise to sell the best bike model. At present, two of these leading motorbike manufacturers are Suzuki and Yamaha. The products of both companies have been tried and tested by a lot of people because they have dependable and high-quality machines.

With the Suzuki brand, one of its leading brands is the 2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000. This is not surprising since this bike boasts of having a powerful engine and torque. As such, the buyer can be assured that it will have an incredible acceleration or speed. Due to its lighter weight and easy to understand functions, the bike is easy to handle. Another change with the Suzuki GSX-R1000 is the 4.8 gallon fuel capacity. As such, there is no more need to make frequent stops at gasoline stations.

At an affordable price of 10,999 dollars, the buyer can buy it in the color combinations blue and white, silver and gray, as well as red and black. He can purchase the bike online or in Suzuki stores near his or her house. No matter where he buys the bike, he is still guaranteed to receive the one-year warranty with an unlimited mileage. No doubt about it, every penny he spends on this bike will be worth it.

As one of the leading bike producers of today, the model that Yamaha is proud to have created is the 2006 Yamaha YZF-R1. The bike model’s interior engine and exterior look have been perfected by Yamaha with its 50 years of experience in racing. During this time, the creators have made the bike faster by creating its advanced engine firepower. Like the Suzuki model, the Yamaha YZF-R1 also weighs lighter than most motor bikes in the market.

It seems like the two bikes have only a few things in common. Aside from their powerful engine and light weight, both bikes are also easy to handle. As such, riding these bikes will be such a breeze.

A Hazardous Sport - BE PREPARED!

August 31st, 2007

Quality motorcycle gear combines comfort, style, fit, durability, weather protection, and armor. The bottom line with equipment is, you WILL eventually fall, and when you do, you will most likely become very close friends with the pavement. So you need the “maximum impact and abrasion resistance” as possible.

Armor is extra padding sewn into the jacket or pants to cushion likely spots of impact. Road rash is the not so fun part about riding a motorcycle. It is painful and bloody, but impacts can cause serious and sometimes fatal internal damage. So shoulders, elbows, buttocks, and knees are spots that you want to be well protected, as they are the most common of impact points. In any serious crash it isn’t hard to get a bruise on all of these body locations. Other common regions of impact are the chest, back, and collar bone. So as you can see armor placement is crucial.

Material used for armor is another major concern. They are usually composites of plastic and foam. Simple plastic plates would slash through the material and expose you to injury, so they put hard plastic plates inside a thick layer of firm foam. Some garments also have built in spine protectors. If not, however, and you feel that you are not properly protected, jacket liners with armor pads are available for purchase, which are called “body guard jackets”.

For the most part, jackets off the rack consist of small, medium, large, and extra large. But there is more to a well fitting jacket than that. Your protection depends on how well your equipment fits. If you luck out and find a jacket that you like and fits well off the rack, you’re in business. But if you don’t you can order custom made leathers. There is 5 companies worldwide that can do your custom fit; Langlitz, Bates, Z Custom Leather, Vanson, and Aerostitch. But don’t expect to order up your jacket and have it in a week. Each company can only produce about 1600 custom jackets per year, so there is a waiting list as long as the dictionary. So make sure you place your order well before you need to ride, or you could be hooped.

My Motorcycle Won’t Start!! What Now?

August 19th, 2007

Maintain your Battery and check your charging system!

9 times out of 10 the reason why your bike won’t start is usually because of the battery condition or loose connections. A charging system failure is less likely but is still possible.

I will talk about both of them here.

First look at your battery connections. Check for obvious and easiest to fix problems first. A loose connection, poor ground etc. will likely cause intermittent operation of the starting and charging systems. If you find a loose connection and/or corrosion, clean the connections with a wire brush.

Before re-attaching apply a little grease to the contact points. The grease helps to prevent any of the white corrosion residues building up around the battery terminals.

Try and start her up now. You still have a problem? Go down to the mall and buy yourself a small electronic multimeter. (Make sure it has both AC and DC volt functions, as well as a continuity (or OHMS)function. Pull out the battery and set it on a counter. Set your multimeter to DC volts. Measure the Battery voltage by placing the red lead on the positive and the Black on the negative.

The voltage read should be around 12.5 volts (higher is OK) If the voltage is less than this it may indicate a poor battery. Notice I say, “may” here because the bike’s charging system might be at fault. In this case the battery will most likely be OK.

Confirm that the electrolyte level in each cell of the battery is good. Add distilled water only to cell’s with a low level. (Obviously you cannot add water to a maintenance free battery) Charge the battery overnight with a slow charger only. Motorcycle batteries cannot handle a fast charge. Make sure the charger only charges at a rate of 2 amps or less.

Install the battery and try and start her again. If she still won’t go buy a new battery and your problem will likely be fixed. If she starts and runs like a charm, then you have to find out why the battery went dead. You need to check the charging system.

With the engine running, place the multimeter leads on the battery. Rev the engine a little. The system voltage should rise with engine RPM. A voltage of around 13.5 to about 14.5 should be displayed. If the voltage stays constant and/or is slowly decreasing, or if the voltage rises above 14.7 volts the charging system is not functioning.

What do you do now? You have to check two things. The Stator and the Regulator. The stator creates an AC voltage. The regulator changes the AC to DC voltage and also maintains that voltage at the proper level.

The Stator can be checked with the Ohms function on your meter. Locate and remove the plug for the stator on the front of the engine block. You will see two or three pins inside.

Set the meter for low Ohms, and measure the continuity between these pins. 5 Ohms or less is what you are looking for here. Set the meter to the highest setting. With 1 lead attached to a metal part of bike check for continuity to each pin. You meter should read infinite, or no continuity. If these tests check out then your stator is fine. If there is a fault in any of these tests, then see your dealer

The regulator is the easiest of all to check. The regulator is made of solid state electronics and can’t be opened. Replace the regulator if everything else on the charging system checks out or if there is an overcharging situation.

On most Harley’s you will not know if the charging system is beginning to fail. The evidence shows up when you have dim lights or she just won’t start. There are aftermarket accessories that you can install on your bike that will tell you the current state of the charging system.

Save yourself some bucks here!! With a simple multimeter available from any Electronics parts store you can troubleshoot your charging system and check your battery and most likely repair any problems yourself.

Motorcycle Thoughts

August 3rd, 2007

I’ve heard many non-motorcyclists make stereo-typical and condescending remarks alluding to the mentality of motorcyclists. Comments which classify riders into groups depending on what type or make of motorcycle one rides. What kind of pessimistic person would deem a “Harley” rider a ‘bad-boy, looking for a fight’ or a sport-bike rider an ‘irresponsible punk, trying to go fast’? It seems to me that most people who have never ridden a motorcycle make these types of interpretations out of fear or ignorance. While it is true that there are those motorcycle riders who DO fit the stereo-typical persona, it is also true that there are more absent-minded and oblivious drivers of gas-guzzling SUVs.

I was once told that “after riding motorcycles for a while, you will become a better motorist.” I really did not believe this to be true. However, after a couple of years and several thousands of miles later, I not only understand, but also fully believe its accuracy. Without the protection of a car’s safety features and encasement from the elements, motorcyclists are forced to develop a 6th sense. Our skills are honed to recognize the difference between a driver’s absent minded swaying and one who intends to quickly switch lanes.

While this skill is not inherent, it is very wide spread throughout the motorcycle community. Personally I think this is one of the biggest reasons that passing motorcyclists wave to each other; we all know what its like to be on two wheels and cut off, or worse yet have a driver switch lanes while we are right next to them.

Of course dealing with these issues comes with the territory; offset by one’s personal love for motorcycles. Riding motorcycles have many advantages. Including splitting traffic (where allowed by law), extremely good fuel economy, relaxation as well as many others. I have often wondered how substantial big-city traffic jams would be reduced if 30 – 40% would just ride a motorcycle. I’m sure this would greatly impact the smog pollution as well. Maybe this could also offset the summer gas price increases.

While my thoughts may go unheeded, perhaps they will give non-motorcyclists a different point of view from which they may expound their narrow-mindedness. I am an AMA member and I would recommend all motorcyclists to join, street or dirt. The AMA organization has done a lot to support and further protect us. Representing / supporting this organization can only better all of our experiences.

More to Learn about Spark Plugs

July 23rd, 2007

Size

Let us distinguish the important difference in spark plugs threaded ends. They come in four diameters and lengths. They come in nominal 14, 10, 12 and 18 millimeters diameters. Previously, there was a slight difference in thread configuration especially in different countries. However, the international standardization of the thread forms made it uniform. These new dimensions are now being followed by motorcycle parts manufacturers.

Usual Errors

There can be lots of error in selecting the best motorcycle parts especially in the case of spark plugs. The very usual error is using 3/4-inch plugs in 1/2 –inch holes. The result of the same is horrible.

When the plug threads are exposed in combustion, they become filled with deposits. Consequently, it will be hard to remove the plug without removing the hole threads. Quite the reverse, if you use a short plug to a deep hole, the deposit will fill the hole and it will be hard to re-install the right size plug.

The worst error is the use of overly-long plug. The exposed threads absorb great amount of heat from the combustion process which improve the plug-nose temperatures. As a consequence, the side electrode functions as a glow plug. Early ignition or runaway pre-ignition causes higher combustion chamber temperatures that can destroy the engine.

Heat Range Demands

Hot plugs come with a long insular nose. They lead heat high into the plug body before it returns to the cylinder head. Short-nosed plugs, on the other hand, have shorter heat path. Consulting the spark plug manufacturers regarding the plug’s heat range can be of great help.

This may somehow clear the cobwebs at the back of your mind regarding heat range demands. Knowing which plugs are colder or hotter may be easy if you stick to the same brand however, it becomes perplexing when you change from one brand to another.

There is more to spark plugs than the three aforementioned aspects. There are still areas that we need to master like its installations, different plug configurations and maintenance work. Nonetheless, we have to be first acquainted with these three aspects.

You must know more about spark plugs to pick the best type. Another, you have to complement your choice with your bike engine’s condition. These factors are hard to acquire and do, thus, we have to instill lots facts all at once. When you get it right, you will be greatly benefited.

Liquid Cooled Minimotos (PocketBikes), How Fast Are They and Are They Affordable?

July 12th, 2007

As the latest craze of Minimoto Madness continues in the United Kingdom. The demand for pocket bikes means that the consumer is now looking for more better quality products which are not only affordable for the average earner but also produce great horsepower and fast speeds.

Price range of liquid cooled minimotos?

Only a few months ago it would have been almost impossible to get a quality liquid cooled minimoto for less than £600, however due to reliable UK based companies who have started to import liquid cooled pocket bikes of great quality, you can now get a liquid cooled minimoto for as little as £250. (See below for a minimoto importer website who sells all four of the liquid cooled pocket bikes discussed below)

Currently there are lots of liquid cooled minimoto’s available from big companies such as GRC, Polini, Blata etc… as these are of the highest available quality they will cost you thousands of pounds! However UK based companies who now import directly from Asia can offer the consumer fast pocketbikes as low as £250!

What models are available under £350?

Discussed here are four of the most popular liquid cooled minimoto’s which are all available for under £350! Pictures of all these are provided in the link at the end of this article.

Polini style liquid cooled minimoto

For those just progressing from the air cooled minimoto’s the next step up is the Polini 911 style liquid cooled minimoto. This is a reliable bike with a super cast aluminum quality frame. This minimoto hits approximately 55 – 60mph. As it is similar in style to the air cooled minimoto’s and not a dramatic speed increase it is just the right mini moto to use to give you the extra thrill but not make your hair stand up!
Also it is an ideal minimoto to learn how to tweak and tune up, as the parts availability is high for this model and many original minimoto parts will fit straight on. These pocketbikes have the least problems out the box and are easiest to maintain.

Specification of a Polini style minimoto

ENGINE: 39cc 2 Stroke Water Cooled (6.2hp)
BRAKES: Twin front & single rear discs

FRAME: Aluminum
START: Pull cord
TYRES: Semi slicks
COOLING: Water cooled radiator with water pump
EXHAUST: Performance exhaust with large expansion chamber
SPEED: Up to 60mph (depending on weight / weather & road conditions)

Blata Origami Style liquid cooled minimoto

Next in the range, and slightly faster is the Origami style minimoto. This is slightly faster than the Polini style bike and has what’s known as a mk 3 frame. It is a more squarer frame than the usual air cooled minimoto frames. When the first batch of these originally came from China they had many problems including overheating issues however since then they have been upgraded and modifications now done on them mean they no longer have these problems. If its reliability you want as the next step up then the Polini style minimoto is better to go for than the Origami style minimoto, however if you want more speed and know a little more about minimoto’s and are willing to fine tune these Origami style ones they will serve you well and you will not be disappointed!

Specification of an origami style minimoto:

ENGINE: 39cc 2 Stroke Water Cooled
BRAKES: Wavy Twin front & single rear discs

FILTER: Large K&N Style performance cone filter
START: Pull cord
TYRES: Street Tyres
COOLING: Water cooled radiator with water pump
EXHAUST: Performance exhaust with large expansion chamber
SPEED: Up to 60mph (depending on weight / weather & road conditions)

Blata Elite style liquid cooled minimoto

The Elite rep has the same spec engine as the Origami rep however due to its light frame and half fairing this bike is scary! Smaller and lighter than the other water cooled bikes you will struggle to keep the front wheel down due to sheer power. Once mastered you will leave everyone with a face full of exhaust fumes as you shoot off into the distance. This bike is not suitable for inexperience riders and minors! Although the Elite rep is fast the downside is the frame, which needs to be made stronger with a bit more welding!

Specification of the Elite style minimoto:

ENGINE: 39cc 2 Stroke Water cooled
COOLING: Water cooled radiator with water pump
FILTER: Large K&N Style performance cone filter
EXHAUST: Performance exhaust with large expansion chamber
SPEED: 60+mph (Dependant on rider weight, weather, surface conditions)
BRAKES: Front & Rear Disc
MAX LOAD: 110kg
TYRES: slick tyres
TANK CAPACITY: 1.5l
STARTER: Pull Cord
POWER: 8.5 BHP/15000rm (manufacturer claim – tested to be very very fast)

Banshee Sho (GRC style - liquid cooled minimoto)

Last but not least is the newest water / liquid cooled minimoto to come out from China. There’s many similarities style wise between this BANSHEE SHO rep and the GRC minimoto’s. This has to be the ultimate bike for thrill seekers. This bike gets the adrenaline pumping like no other. Super high quality mini moto with a full aluminium frame. This minimoto oozes style & the paintwork on most is just fabulous! This pocketbike boosts an amazing 11 bhp and has a 50cc 2 stroke engine compared to the others which have a 39cc engine.

This bike would only be suited to those very comfortable on minimoto’s they are Not suitable for inexperience riders and minors! A Caution comes with this bike as it is extremely fast! This minimoto also has 3 power bands and you will get the most out of it on a track with long straights.

Specification of the Banshee style minimoto:

ENGINE: 50cc 2 Stroke Water Cooled (11hp)
COOLING: Liquid Cooling
SPEED: 65+mph
BRAKES: Twin Front Brake Discs & Single Rear Disc
START: Pull Start
RADIATOR: Water cooled radiator with water pump & bleed valve
TYRES: semi slick tyres
FRAME: aluminum

Depending on your preference the above four pocket bikes will cater for most riders who want to move up from air cooled pocketbikes. The link provided below has pictures and further details on all liquid cooled minimotos.

What is a Kid ATV?

June 30th, 2007

Kids like to ride the allterain vehicles just like adults do. The adult ones are a little too big for some children and are not suited for them to ride. Some of the bigger atvs are more powerful and are too large for children to control. That is why there is a kid atv for younger children to ride and have fun with.

The kid atvs are made to be smaller so that they will be suitable for young children. They will be able to ride their atvs and enjoy them without worrying about the size of the machine and being too large for them. The smaller ones have handlebars that are closer to the seat and the foot pedals are easier for them to reach. This will make the ride for any child is safer and more fun.

There are many stores that have different kid atvs to choose from. There are many styles and brands of these fun vehicles for them too choose from. Each child is different and the needs for the ATV may be different as well. It is important to make sure that the child is comfortable on the atv and that all of the features are accessible for the child while riding.

There are many colors and designs of the kid atvs that are out there on the market. For some kids, they want to have a certain color or model. If you cannot find the right one in the stores, you can shop online to find the ones that fit your budget as well as your needs. There are many shops online or you can check out the auction sites for the right ATV for you.

A kid ATV is going to have a smaller engine and horsepower as well. This is so that the ATV is not more powerful than what the child can handle. This is important for safety reasons. A child should have the right ATV that has adequate power for them. Children do no need to ride at fast speeds that are dangerous for them. It is possible for the child to have fun with their kid ATV and not ride at high rates of speed. This is very important for parents to check into when they are deciding on the right ATV for their child.

It is also important to for the child to learn the proper safety so that their ride will be a good one. All children should know the right safety procedures so that they will not be in danger while on their kid ATV. Anyone can have a lot of fun as long as they are using common sense and safety first.
