Easter and the Rabbit on the Moon

March 25th, 2008

Happy Easter!

Long time ago around Lithuanian there was a goddess named Eostre that was brought to the Norse along with Perkunas by the people of the Historic Odin; being Eostare and Thor. Eostare was a fertility Goddess of Spring and the word east is named after her because of the rise of the sun. Now tonight, look up at the moon and you will see her little friend with an Easter basket. The Moon is tilted just right and is almost full. You will see a profile of a Rabbit with its ears back and a basket in his hand (The right eye of the Moon being the ears and the nose the body). The egg is the soul and the chick is the resurrection. The Snake is in there too, as the moon fades away it could be thought that a snake with his mouth open is swallowing the moon. Only too begin to birth it out again as an egg in three days time. From Crescent moon to full it will labor for the month just to come back around on it from the other side to swallow it once more.

In ancient Mesopotamia, they practiced regicide. On a astrological cycle they would kill the king and his court and partake of the kings blood and body. Christ reenacted the metaphor at the last supper by breaking the bread and passing the wine.

Also in ancient cultures, Men had three births by ritual. Woman had them as well but by nature through life, menstruation, and motherhood. But Men needed the mind. Boys were born of their mothers. Adolescents were initiated into Manhood in caves and pits by Men. Then to reach enlightenment, Men were initiated by three women and a tomb. The womb and the Tomb through willing sacrifice to the universe. To have such powers had to have a commitment to use it for the benefit of all society. So you had to become selfless and an individual at the same time. All for one, one for all. Odin hung from the world tree for nine days giving himself unto himself. He knew when he hung that he was god, as was Christ on the cross, or as you and me when we realize it. “Lift that stone you will find me.” Said Christ in the Gospel of Thomas. Buddha sat under the Boddhi (illumination) tree to gain enlightenment. All three sat at the tree of knowledge.

Now Christ hung to be followed by three hours of darkness by the moon eclipsing the sun (Which in reality the jews did a yearly calendar fix of three hours, like fall back and spring forward of our day light saving time, which would of made it evening quick). Also he was in the tomb for three days. Lazarerous sat in the tomb for the same duration, but for his Manhood initiation. The Moon, the symbol of resurrection and cycles, is vacant for three days in the night sky to be born again by the snake. Christ rose on the new moon, the Crescent, as a gardener. Men might not give birth to children, but give birth to trillions of little lives that think for themselves and swim to lesser or greater degrees. They might be no more intelligent than bacteria, which is also alive. But being the opposite of an egg that is inert and just rolls down hill. So also maybe ten trillion little swimmers might give men some equality to woman in the matter of birth over time? So we see Christ as the sower in the Garden when he finds the Magdalean (The Watchtower one climbs to protect the sheep).

This Easter we have allot to think about with the Da Vinci Code coming out next month and the release of the tossed back and forth between thief and collector of the Gospel of Judas. A Gospel that the Muslims might of known about, for their always was an old tradition of a sacred order from Christ to fulfill his ritual of Crucifixtion, or regicide. From Donkey at Jerusalem to the thirty pieces of silver, reflecting the three women at the tomb , three hours of darkness, three nights of darkness in the tomb. Jesus had said “The man I give this sop of bread to will betray me.” He hands it then to Judas and says be quick. Now a man who was the treasurer of the disciples who held their money already, what would he need with another thirty pieces? The new gospel will ask these questions again.

Some speculation, did Judas hang himself by the neck or foot like Odin. Could he have gone through the same ceremony as Odin or Christ?

One day we might find out.

Cheers and happy Easter,

Chris

A MISSIONARY IN THE PINEY WOODS OF GEORGIA

March 11th, 2008

When one in the U.S.A things of missionaries, we tend to think of a foreign country. My mission field is in the piney woods of Georgia, where I grew up. This is the “Bible Belt”, so we have many churches of all denominations…but what is sad, is that many of these folks are not saved, and many in this area do not go to church. When the LORD called me, he told me to go back home, I have a mission for you. During the past 18 years, He has used me greatly here, witnessing to many (even some preachers, Sunday school teachers, deacons, and choir directors). I have led many to Jesus.

What is bewildering to me, is that I am not recognized as a missionary. If I was in Brazil, China, or some other country, then I would be. The LORD has missionaries everywhere, even in your home town.

Pray for all who are bringing the message of good news.

String of Pearls — A Call for Intercessors

January 21st, 2008

My wife had a vision recently of a string of pearls, adorning a bride
at her wedding.

The “pearls” were the pastors in a given region. Not all
the pastors, but those who are allowing the Lord to “string them
together” in unity.

In the vision, she saw these pearls were “double-
knotted” — that’s where each pearl on a necklace is knotted on both
sides so if the string ever breaks, pearls don’t slide off to be lost… At most,
only the one pearl where the string breaks may be lost.

Interpretation:

Pastors are the “Pearls”! The pastors are vital to your
region, and must be upheld at all costs. These “pastor pearls” are
spiritual gates, as in Rev. 21:21 “The 12 gates were 12 pearls, each gate made
of a single pearl…”

There are 12 gates/pearls because there are 12 Apostles. That
doesn’t mean there are only 12 “pastors” in your region in unity, nor
does it mean that these are “five-fold apostles” either. That these gates/
pearls are the Twelve Apostles, points to our pastors as ministers of God’s spiritual
authority over your region… Not “apostles” who inappropriately
“control” the lives of others, but as spiritual authority maintaining and
extending the Victory over the principalities and powers in your region.

Also, these “pastor pearls” are “gates” into
the Presence of God for your region. Now, everyone knows a pearl isn’t the size of
one of Heaven’s “gates” and if it were, no person could walk through one
because they’re quite solid. But this Heavenly “pearl” represents that
Suffering which Releases God’s Mercy — and every pastor who is led by the
Spirit of God, is a “suffering servant” through whom God’s ”
mercy” is released into the lives of God’s children. Through honoring our
pastors, every Child of God who desires a greater release into the Life and Presence
of Christ can find it through the shepherd God has given to each of us.

Knots help keep the pastors lifted up into the places God has put
them. The “knots” are “tied” by the prayers and intercessions
of the saints…but the “knots” are not the prayers themselves. The “knots” are
“Honor”. Believers who intercede for
their pastors bring honor both to God and to these servants who have suffered for
the sake of bringing Christ to your region. As Believers continue to pray for their
pastors, they fulfill the role of Aaron and Hur who honored the God of Moses by
upholding Moses’ authority (his staff, held in his hands — Ex. 17.12.)

A necklace adorning the Bride! The bride in the vision is the “Bride of
Christ”! The unity of the pearls, each held in place in honor by the Believers, is
part of the Preparation of the Bride in your region!

The Prophetic Promise

The vision is that of a string of pearls, strung together and each one
double-knotted. The Lord is setting before us a strategic opportunity (Gk.
topos) — a koinonia (a project “co-owned” by all
who participate.) This is an opportunity to not only press into the Unity of Christ,
but for Believers to uphold their pastors in power and authority and thereby release
the Preparation of the Bride of Christ throughout this Age!

How The Bible Addresses Your “Interpersonal Issues”

January 14th, 2008

In the interest of transparency, I’ll share that whenever I write or speak about a principle or situation, God arranges for me to have an experience that helps me understand it on a deeper level. It makes me careful about what I say. It also keeps me aware that whatever I think I know has more depth and dimensions that I can personally grasp.

I pray for my lessons to come gently. Through His Grace I am prepared to receive lessons in the way that I will understand them. That’s how I know that the lesson was for me. Yvonne 101, Remedial Dr. LaMar, Intro to Sisterly Love, or Romantic Relationships for the Beginner.

Then, every once in a while, I get a life lesson that I did not know I needed. Honestly, sometimes I don’t want to get the bottom of the issue. I can accept that I will always have shortcomings. Everyone has issues. Who wants to be in the middle of a lesson that they didn’t ask for? Then reality sets in and I realize that until the lesson is learned it will only repeat itself.

My most recent revelation has been that our issues are reflected in the company we keep. Have you ever left a conversation or gathering wondering why you feel a certain way? Those life lessons that catch me off guard are usually the result of interacting with other people. There two ways to look at the way these issues surface.

First, there are some things you would never know about yourself unless you are around other people. Yes, interpersonal issues! Yankees have no idea how fast we talk or what accent we have until Texans inform us. The entire social food chain is built on one’s ability to interact with certain types of other people. “Get in where you fit in” is an old expression that my mother used. If an issue is persistent, you might be spending time in the wrong crowd.

If not fitting in were more noticeable, it would be easy to remedy. The hard part about this issue is that you can look like everyone, sound like them, share lots of experiences, and still manage to have problems relating. It is hard to avoid blaming yourself when everybody else seems happy about the way things are going.

Second, some attitudes are contagious. It’s easy to think it’s your problem when it really is not. This life lesson is especially painful because you waste a great deal of time working on yourself only to have the issues resurface again and again. People are so important, both socially and on a personal level. Its amazing how much these simple interactions can affect our days and sometimes our whole lives.

The worst thing about bad attitudes is that the people who possess them refuse to keep it to themselves. I think they need proof that their terrible outlook really exists and they bring you down so they can get a verbal confirmation. Just a theory! OK, a theory from someone who has fallen for this trick too many times.

No matter what life lesson is brought to my attention, I know that it always comes down to faith. God supplies for all of our needs, so why are other people so important? It’s a Sunday kind of question that finds me all through the week. I blame my profession. I do research. I rely on statistics. Observations of every day events are what mold my views. Wanting to know why is a gift and a burden. I’ll leave certainty to the Bible.

It is not good for man to be alone. Dealing with people can be complicated. If you are the self-reflecting type, just make sure that you are working on the right person.

“My, What Big ‘I’s’ You Have!”

January 4th, 2008

I made the mistake of listeningreally listeningto myself
wishing the other day, and I thought (paraphrasing Red Riding
Hood’s comment to her wolfish grandmother), “My, what big “I’s
you have!”

I wanted a newer car (a 1987) with a tapedeck; I wanted new
siding and insulation for the back part of the house. I wanted a
new mattress for our bed, to replace the sagging, split and
lumpy one we had had for five years. (We bought it used for
fifty dollars.) I wanted relief for Archie’s paining back and
arm. I wantedwell, the list went on.

Then I realized what an ingrate I was. I have a nice little car,
a comfortable home, a bed to lie on and a supply of food. I have
a husband whose love, compassion and sensitivity are second to
none . We have our animals (pets all, from the dogs, cats and
raccoon to the horses, goats and chickens) and our neighbours
and friends. Once again, the list went on.

Am I really so different from you? Do you too find yourself
focusing on what you want, instead of thanking God for what you
have already? Do you, too, forget the millions of souls on our
weary planet who could live for a week on your daily diet? Do
you, too, sometimes think that because you live in a Western
society, you are entitled to share an affluent lifestyle? Do
you, too, think that a camcorder is a need? a remote for your
television, a necessity? a top-fashion outfit a prerequisite to
your happiness?

If so, I beg you to stop with me a while, and look around at
where we are right now. We are dwelling in a fool’s paradise,
ignoring Lazarus at our gateLazarus in the form of street
children, outcasts, and the poverty-stricken individuals who
make their homes under bridges and in subway stations. These
people are our burden. Our mandate from the Lord is to share our
possessions with them; to comfort and encourage them; to ease
their suffering in whatever way we can.

We live in troubled times. We cannot ignore the sorrow around
us. We must be like the Good Samaritan, if we would follow
Christ.

We cannot turn our eyes inward to see what we would like to
havewe must rather open our eyes outward, to see what they MUST
have to live.

We must indeed have big eyesbig to see, and big with
compassionate tears. We must indeed have big I’sI can do this
little bit to help; I can do that little bit to help, and I will
do what I can. Thus will our I’s serve us.

I pray that our returning Lord will not find us “seeing, but
perceiving not” the need around us. I pray that our returning
Lord will not find us sulking in a fit of gloom because our
pride is hurt. I pray that as we turn to others to share His
love and bounty, we will find such peace that our eyes will see
His face in all we help.

“Even so, come, Lord Jesus” but until You do, we shall do what
You would have us do.

Let us do all we can, as we can, and pray that others will join
us as we do.

[Note: The above article was written close to a decade ago, but
unfortunately hasn’t lost any of its immediacy in the
intervening years. As a society we’re *still* putting things
before people’s needs far too often in our daily lives… aren’t
we? - DEH]

Jesus: King of Kings!

December 21st, 2007

With Christmas just around the corner our thoughts turn
naturally to the birth of Jesus. Most people think of Jesus as a
teacher and a healer, and of course they would be right. The
Bible also tells us that God promised King David a son who would
reign over Israel for ever. That son was Jesus Christ.

We often forget that Jesus can claim the title “King of the
Jews”. When Jesus was born, the wise men asked Herod “Where is
he that is born King of the Jews?” Nobody laughed, for the
Jewish priests knew from scriptures that one day a special king
would be born in Bethlehem. (Micah 5:2,4)

We know in hindsight that the last time Jesus was on earth it
was not God’s will for Jesus to become King of Israel at that
time. The gospel had to be preached to the whole earth first, as
it now has been. That does not mean Jesus will not be king over
Israel though.

The Bible tells us that when Jesus returns, his claim to the
throne of David will not be like the kings we see in our world
today - Jesus will have the authority and power to lay claim to
the throne.

The Bible gives us a wonderful hope for our world. It will not
always be in the sad state - the violence, the corruption and
the evil ways of men - that we see today.

The Bible teaches us that we can have that wonderful hope
ourselves and that we will have the opportunity to help Christ
when he returns, but we need to do something about it now. We
need to understand, to believe and be baptised into the saving
name of Christ, if we are to live forever with Jesus in the
world to come.

This is what the apostle Paul said when he explained what he was
looking forward to:

“Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that
Day, and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved
his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:8)

So, think about the birth of Jesus this Christmas, but also
consider the reasons why he was born and the joy that the coming
King will bring!

Satan’s Grip: Why Children Go Bad

December 3rd, 2007

To understand our children’s fall from grace we must look at whom they serve. Many parents ask and even blame themselves,”What did I do wrong?” Parents do have a certain amount of responsibility to guide their children into the righteousness which is God, they must teach and explain, what salvation is, further more this must begin at a young age.

But after you’ve done these things, forget about blaming yourself on the state of your children. We cannot make the decisions for them and we cant hold their hand forever. A child goes bad many times, by choice, per- pressure and a falling society. There comes a time in each child’s life that they must choose their walk in life. Then you say, “Who’s to Blame?”

Its not really blame that we must look for but Circumstances that have surrounded them. Its easy to see the, cause and or circumstances, for our children to fall away from the teachings of their parents. Lets look at a few things before we get into the scripture.

1. The government, because of one woman, took God out of the class room.

2. The media has brought in sex and violence into the children’s everyday life.

3. The Church has failed them because of so much Hypocrisy within its walls.

4. The entire education system has let the children down by not discouraging binge drinking, pre-marital sex and violence on campus. The emphasis is more on sports and less on education. Then who is this man our children follow? Let take a close look.

Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Satan was a teacher in Heaven, an Archangel, a Spirit of Beauty and Light. But Jesus stated that Satan’s fall was because of Pride. 2nd Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. (Sometimes beauty kills.) Luke 22:31-32 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you ( Satan’s desire is to cause the fall of anyone that will believe his lies.

For He cannot return to the Kingdom of Heaven and will prevent as many as He can from doing so.) , that he may sift you as wheat (To tear into peaces.): But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. (Prayer is the best defense against the wiles of the Devil.)

When a name is repeated in the Bible it is a sign that the event will take place twice, it also signifies, love and also a warning, just as we did when our children were out side playing and were about to get themselves into trouble. The first is to get their attention and the second is a warning. Satan is trying to destroy all who will not listen to the warning.

Lets look at 2nd Corinthians 2:11; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. Many times our children fall because they do not know how cunning Satan is, nor what devices he uses to intimidate and confuse. Satan’s grip on not only our children but mankind today has grown because of lack of social integrity. Society in large has become uncaring and disinterested in God. Wars and rumors of wars. Society has taught of children that gain is more important than the soul. The social decline and Lack of reverence to God has caused this world to come into turmoil.

When I was a child, my parents taught me about, right and wrong, Jesus and God, responsibility and patriotism. Thou it took me many years after leaving home to realize for myself that I was missing something in my life. I had it all but still felt empty. When the Holy Spirit reminded me of who Jesus was and I was converted, I found that that empty place in my Heart was gone. If you’ve taught your children about the Bible, the word will never leave them, its still there in their mind. Many times children fall because what they see their parents do, just because a parent does something wrong doesn’t mean that the parent cant explain what he did wrong, why he did it and the consequences of their actions to their child to help prevent another wrong.

If the parents live in sin, the child will believe this action is normal, so we must be careful how we live and what kind of example we give. Children go bad, basically, because of lack of leadership.

1. From the parents.

2. From the Schools and

3. From their minister. The Minister is the last line of defense for a child. A good minister, after trying all prayers, will do as Paul had to do to save those that were hard hearted. Lets read 1st Corinthians 5:5; “To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.”

A minister that is well informed in the scriptures has the power to turn an individual over to Satan to teach the other side of life.

And if this method doesn’t work, He has no other recourse but to turn them over to God, to preform His will.

1Titus 1:20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. Society has taught teenagers that it is natural to have intercourse before marriage, it has taught them that getting pregnant and aborting the pregnancy is natural, it has taught them, having a baby hinders their fun in life (I.E. You can have the pleasure of sex but you don’t have to accept the responsibility for it.) Ars.

The New World Order - Part 1

November 14th, 2007

The Supposed Threat

While Jeffrey sees a New World Order of global domination of economic, political and military power the greatest threat to our national security, he writes that God will intervene before the last seven years of this age and sweep the church off the earth before the Tribulation begins. This is precisely the kind of “crystal ball” fortune-telling modern prophecy pundits engage in when they ignore or overlook the first century fulfillment of the end-time.

Whatever may be on the horizon in a “New World Order” it has nothing to do the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. It sounds great, it makes news headlines, it sells books and tapes, but it is flawed from the very outset. Most importantly, it breeds the kind of negative worldview that Jeffrey sees for the future. It creates a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom and gloom, a stigma which Jeffrey labors to overcome.

Sound The Alarm

When will the alarm sound? Hal Lindsey, Harold Camping, Edgar Whisenant and others all offered doom and gloom signs of an imminent end, carefully calculating it to occur within one generation (40 years) after modern Israel’s rebirth as a nation in 1948. Thus, 1988 was the year on their prophetic clock, one that ticked right on by without the need for a rewind.

As a matter of fact, Whisenant wrote that his calculations were so sure that “Only if the Bible was wrong, could he be in error, and I say that unequivocally.” There is no way that I can be wrong and I say that to every preacher in town.” (Quoted in Ralph Lyman, A Critique on the 1988 Rapture Theory).

After 1988 came, Whisenant recapitualted, blaming the error on the Gregorian calendar which is always one year in advance of the true year. Therefore, Whisenants prediction should have scored mightily in 1989, but it passed without a fizzle.

Hello! It’s 2006, well beyond even that magical end-time destruction year of 2000. Where’s the beef! Yet many sleep, never calling these false prophets into question (Deuteronomy 18:18-20), and continually allow them to rant and rave about their fanatical, fanciful theories of futuristic falsehood.

Let Her Be Covered Part Three

November 5th, 2007

Now, let’s recall again the text: “Let her be covered.” That is God’s decree.

All right, let who be covered? That is question number 4. “Who is to be covered?” If this is for Mennonites only, as some wrongly suppose, then it ought to read “let every Mennonite sister be covered.” But the text has in it no such limitation. This is not a denominational teaching. This is a Bible teaching.

Already in verse 3 we are being prepared to think in a much broader scope, for there, where the principle is in focus, it is stated that the head of EVERY man is Christ. No exception is made. Christ is the authority figure for every man, whether or not he obeys Him, Christ is his head. And, by the same token, man remains woman’s God-appointed head, whether or not she submits. And then when we come to the application, verses 4-6, again it’s EVERY woman and EVERY man, indicating the widest possible application, conveying the idea that this practice is intended to be universal. There’s also no reference here to marriage, which eliminates the idea that this is applicable only to women who are married. You may sometime be confronted with that idea. Really, the headship of man over woman is an aspect of God’s government in this world. And, as such, it is not limited only to life in the Kingdom of God. But, since judgment begins at the house of God, Paul is here singling out an instance that would constitute a violation in the context of church life.

I’m driven to the conclusion that EVERY woman who wants to take her God-assigned place under man is duty-bound to signify that purpose of heart by being covered. “Who is to be covered?” SHE is to be covered — the woman who recognizes and submits to her God-ordained place in God’s arrangement.

Growing out of this is a fifth question: “With what shall she be covered?”

An increasing number of voices are responding to this question with this easy answer: “With her hair. Let her be covered with her hair.” But this answer simply cannot survive close scrutiny. To begin with, at the time of this writing [of 1 Corinthians 11] there was practically no need in Christian circles for a plea to retain the hair covering. Long hair had been the long-accepted practice, and to my knowledge was not even being challenged.

Furthermore, those who claim that this passage has in view no other covering but the hair are knowingly discrediting about 1900 years of Christian practice and Biblical scholarship. For that long of time, the wearing of an additional covering was taught and practiced on a very wide scope. Those who argue for the hair only are thereby implying that in respect to this issue the Christian church started out wrong and has been wrong for most of her history. I’m not ready to believe that.

Verse 15 does speak of long hair as “A” covering, nature’s covering, but it’s not “THE” covering called for in verses 5-6. And that conclusion is substantiated by the fact that, in the Greek, the word for covering in verses 5-6 is not the same word as is used in verse 15. And this difference comes to light in a number of the more reliable modern versions. They actually use the term “veil” in verses 5-6.

But a careful reading of verse 6, even in the King James Version, should convince anyone that another covering beside the hair is in view. Let’s right now take a moment to look at that verse. Verse 6: “For if the woman be not covered”. Let’s stop right there. If, as some claim, the hair is the only covering in view, than this clause would envision a woman whose hair has been removed, right? “For if the woman be not covered.” That envisions a case where the hair has been removed, if the hair is the covering called for. Now, look at the next clause: “Let her also be shorn.” Now you have a problem on your hands, for how can you remove something that has already been removed? How can there be two successive removals of the same thing? What the statement really means is this: a woman ought to wear both the hair covering and the sign covering, or none at all. If she refuses to be veiled, she deserves a second mark of disgrace: that of being shorn.

And here is a still further consideration: If the only covering in view is the hair, the Christian man would need to remove his hair in order to comply with God’s will.

Now remember the question was “With what shall she be covered?” Here are possible ways of stating the simple answer. She is to voluntarily cover her head with a material covering. It ought to be distinguishable from protection coverings. It ought to be identifiable as one that carries religious significance. To think of it only as a symbol allows for it to become too small. The terminology employed here requires that it be also a covering, that which “covers”. Although it is a symbol, it must be a symbol that covers.

And now I raise question number 6: “When is she to be covered?” And in response to this, I can imagine someone saying, “Well that’s an easy one, your answer’s right there in the text. ‘Every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head’. There’s your answer – she’s to be covered when she prays or prophesies.” As far as it goes that’s an acceptable answer, but I don’t think the evidence is conclusive that this practice is to be limited to such times. That would reduce it to a “devotional covering” or a “worship covering”, when actually the larger context supports the view that it’s primarily a “headship covering”. And, since the headship of man extends to all of life, and since the world so much needs the awareness that the covering creates, isn’t it logical to conclude that the wearing of the covering should be constant?

But why does Paul single out times of praying and prophesying? That is a valid question. Although we can’t know for sure, it may be that those were the occasions when the Corinthian women were beginning to think that they would be justified in throwing off their veil in the name of their newfound Christian liberty. I’m simply suggesting that Paul might have received reports of violations occurring at such times. If so, that would explain why he would name these specific times.

Students of the Greek language have pointed out that the words of my text, “Let her be covered,” are in the present active imperative form, so that, by grammatical structure, it really means “let her continue to be covered.”

In relation to this question, I would conclude with these remarks. The veiled head does not necessarily signify that “here is a soul that is presently praying or prophesying.” Rather, it signifies that “here is a woman who seeks to honour God in all of life.” So, it’s not really a prayer veiling, but a woman’s veiling, worn to show that the wearer is in God’s order. Let’s think of it in those terms. Not a “devotional covering”. Not a “worship covering”. But a “woman’s covering”. A “headship covering”. That, I think, is the main thrust of the passage as a whole.

How To Pray The Rosary

October 23rd, 2007

Many years ago, I attended a Catholic mass with a (non-Catholic) boy I was dating at the time. When leaving the church, my boyfriend turned to me and asked why we were constantly changing positions as the priest spoke. To be honest, I didn’t have an answer for him. After attending church weekly (or twice weekly when school was in session) for so many years, the words can often become rote, and when to sit, stand, or kneel is almost a Pavlovian response. To this day, I don’t know the reason behind all of the motions, but in spite of attending various churches over many years, the movements have been consistent in all of them.

Many of the Catholic practices have evolved over time, and how to pray the rosary is one example. Most Catholics believe that the Rosary prayer originated when the Virgin Mary appeared before St. Dominic (the founder of the Dominicans) in the early 1200s with a wreath of roses which she used to teach him to pray the rosary. Although, today’s Catholics use Rosaries, pocket Rosaries, or Rosary bracelets rather than wreaths of roses, the basic form of saying the Rosary has remained nearly unchanged in the eight centuries since Mary taught it to St. Dominic.

Begin by making the sign of the cross (briefly touching the fingertips of your right hand to your forehead, the center of your chest over your heart, your left shoulder, and finally your right shoulder while reciting, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”)

Next Recite the Apostle’s Creed.
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth
Of all that is seen and unseen.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
And born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again,
He ascended into heaven
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Catholic Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And life everlasting.
Amen

The Apostle’s Creed is followed by the Our Father prayer

Our Father who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
Now and forever.
Amen

After saying the Our Father once, recite the Hail Mary prayer three times.

Hail Mary full of grace
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed are Thou amongst women
And blessed is the fruit of they womb, Jesus
Holy Mary, mother of God,
Pray for us sinners
Now and at the hour of our deaths.
Amen

Follow this with a single recitation of the Glory Be to the Father prayer.

Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning,
Is now and ever shall be
World without end.
Amen

After these prayers are said at the beginning, the following prayers are repeated for each of five decades. Recite the Our Father prayer once, followed by the Hail Mary prayer ten times, and the Glory Be to the Father prayer. Although these prayers can be said without accompaniment, most Catholics use a Rosary, Rosary bracelet, pocket Rosary, or Rosary ring to track the prayers on the beads while praying.

Rosaries, pocket Rosaries, and Rosary bracelets are offered in a large variety of materials ranging from inexpensive plastic and string beaded rosaries to more ornate designs which incorporate lampwork glass beads, Swarovski crystals, and gemstones such as black onyx or amethyst. Some rosary bracelets even incorporate more unusual materials like Bali silver to show that even a religious piece of jewelry rooted in centuries of tradition does not need to look traditional.
