Have You Been Dropped By Yahoo?

October 10th, 2007

Yahoo has fairly recently updated its guidelines. You can read the full list at:

http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/basics/basics-18.html

I thought that a few points were of great interest to you because we have discussed these issue in the past when describing the best way to future-proof your site against search engine algorithm changes.

Here are some of the new guidelines:

Pages Yahoo! Wants Included in Its Index

________________________________________

1. Original and unique content of genuine value

2. Pages designed primarily for humans, with search engine considerations secondary

3. Hyperlinks intended to help people find interesting, related content, when applicable

4. Metadata (including title and description) that accurately describes the contents of a web page

5. Good web design in general

It seems content is now King for Yahoo, and unique content at that. As I have always told you, develop webpages with unique content and your sites will do well.

Here is a summary of some of the guidelines Yahoo makes on what not to do. I have added my own comments in brackets afterwards:

1. redirects (targeting smart pages and similar cloaking techniques).

2.Pages that have substantially the same content as other pages (pages generated by page generators that substitute one keyword for another).

3. Pages in great quantity, automatically generated or of little value (data feed sites that are built in a day by someone wanting to put out thousands of pages quickly).

4. Excessively cross-linking sites to inflate a site’s apparent popularity (webmasters who cross link all their sites in an effort to rank better).

5. Pages built primarily for the search engines (highly optimized pages).

Read the full set of guidelines for yourself as they offer a great insight as to why your site may have been dropped by Yahoo.

SEO India: Tips & Techniques

October 4th, 2007

SEO is all about “Individualism”

According to me SEO is not only getting rank for keywords (Of course that is the primary objective) but apart from ranking your objective should be “Conversion” getting “Sales” (No matter if its personal site or clients site)

SEO Steps:

1. Understanding Business.

# What is your business all about

# How is it going to Operate.

# Target audience (Global/Local)

# Opportunity

# Competitor study operating in same business.

# “Core competence”

2. Target Keywords.

# Getting a good list of keywords. (More keywords maximum number of ppl can be targeted)

# This is something that will directly reflect your efforts (targeting wrong keyword will get all your efforts in vain)

3. WEB Designing.

# Navigation

# Page size

# looks n feel

# inter linking

# HTML Code validation*

4. Meta tags & Content

# Title

# Description

# Keywords

# Content

*This is something all seo do in their style, some do not emphasis more on 1st point (according to me which is very important) & shoot up with 3rd step then 2nd & 4th.

5. Directories

# They are the boss (More the submission to directories more the chance to rank top for targeted keyword)

6. Link Building

# I am very bad at this (This is something which can do wonders for you)

I am still in process to transferring my skills & knowledge to a Brand “SEO Expert” or “SEO Specialist”

Linking for Fun and Profit

September 15th, 2007

Well actually, linking isn’t fun at all. In fact, it’s quite tedious. Seeking, responding to requests and adding links takes time and effort. But, if you’re not actively building links the RIGHT way you are going to be left behind. In other words, your site will be “Lost in Cyberspace”. The plain fact is Google, and to a lesser extent, other important search engines, reward sites with links from relevant and important pages.

If you want your site to deliver lots of targeted search engine traffic (and who doesn’t?) there are two equally important factors:

1) lots of keyword-rich, search engine friendly content
2) lots of relevant, incoming links from the RIGHT sources

For real success you need to cover BOTH of these strategies. Don’t concentrate on one and not the other.

So, how do you go about building your links? It’s not rocket science, but as I said, it does take time and effort. From my own experiences, here’s what you should do:

1) Download and install the Google Toolbar:

http://toolbar.google.com/

This will show you the PageRank of the page you are viewing. PageRank is a measure, rated from 1 to 10, of the “importance” that Google gives to that page. There has been a lot written about PageRank. You don’t need to become obsessed with it but it IS an important consideration when determining WHO to link to. A link from a PR-5 page is worth FAR more than a PR-0 page.

2) Establish a resource or links directory for your site. This lets potential link partners see that you are willing to exchange links. You should make it clear on your links pages what your linking policy is i.e. under what conditions you will agree to exchange links.

3) Your aim should be to build a resource directory that is relevent to your business. Don’t try to build a mini Yahoo with umpteen different categories. Keep your directory focussed on your site theme. When you first start out you will be inclined to link to anybody in exchange for a link FROM anybody. This is a mistake. Be patient and choose your link partners carefully.

4) Before requesting a link from another site, add that site to your directory. Contact the webmaster and tell them you added their link because you believe their site would be of interest to your visitors (and so it should). Give the url where your link is located and ask for a return link, along with instructions on how you would like your link worded. NEVER demand by saying things like “if you do not link to us we will remove your link”.

5) If you have not received a reply after 2 - 3 weeks send a polite follow up. Again, don’t demand. No one is under any obligation to link to you. If you do not receive a reply to your second request it means that the webmaster does not want to link to you, or they are simply too busy to respond. In that case, leave it and move on. I receive dozens of link requests a day. Sometimes it takes me many weeks to get around to responding. You’ll go mad worrying about links that have not been reciprocated. Your time is better spent.

6) When you receive a link request visit the site and check that it meets with your requirements as set down on your link pages. Is it a quality site with good content or just a “link farm”? If it doesn’t meet your requirements don’t link to it.

The webmaster SHOULD have already linked to your site but be prepared to overlook that breech of linking protocol if it’s from a good quality, high PR site.

7) Beware of webmasters who add your site to their “directory” which turns out to nothing but a link farm i.e. has no useful content, just a bunch of links, and asks you to link to an entirely different site, one that HAS good content. These webmasters are playing you for a sucker. The benefit is all theirs.

8) As I said in point #1, links from high PR pages are worth more than links from low or no PR pages. Seek out high PR linking partners but keep in mind it is the PR of the actual page your link is on that matters, NOT the PR of the home page. In other words if the home page PR is 5, but the page your link is on is several layers deep in the directory, it will probably have a PR of 0 and be of little benefit to you. Check the PR of the actual page your link is on, or is going to be on, before agreeing to exchange links.

Each page on your links directory should be no more than one click away from your home page, and your linking partner’s site should be the same. If your link is placed on a page which looks something like this - directory/category/subcategory/subcategory with your link - you will derive NO value from that link.

9) Be prepared to negotiate your links. Savvy webmasters understand the value of links from high PR pages. If you add a link to a PR-0 page on your site don’t expect your link partner to put your link on a PR-6 page, and your link partner shouldn’t expect the same from you. Exchange value for like value.

When you first start out your site may not have any PR due to a lack of incoming links. This reduces your bargaining power. However, you can overcome this by getting your site listed in as many large business directories as possible. Some of these you will have to pay, such as Yahoo and Microsoft’s Business Directory, but many others are free. You’ll find a good list here:

http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php

10) Be specific about how you want your link partner to link to you. It is MOST important that the link to you contain your targeted keywords in the anchor (linked) text. When I ask for a link to my site I don’t want the link title to be:

Steve Pronger Web Business Solutions

Instead, I ask for:

Create Website | Small Business Website Designer

or whichever keywords I am targeting at the time. A search for those keywords at Google will illustrate my point!

11) And finally, here is an excellent resource to help you find quality link partners. It’s called Value Exchange, and will put you in contact with like-minded webmasters:

New Site and Sandbox: How to Get Rid of It

August 30th, 2007

You have put lot of sweat in making your site. Now you want it to engender revenues and only source of traffic is search engines. You have completed your seo optimization well but there is no precursor of any traffic. Yes Google places new sites in “Sandbox” and this means that your site would not rank well for high traffic keywords for a certain period. This phenomenon is called as “Sandbox”. What if your site is in “Sandbox” or on hold? Should you hang around or is there any way out. Lets look at few of them:

Have a slow and sturdy link campaign (taking Google new patent into consideration)

Google’s new patent indicates some of the point clearly why many sites are thrown into sandbox for long. By keeping below points into consideration, you could shorten the time span of sandbox for your site.

# Go for everlasting link exchange. Don’t buy links, which will evaporate once you stop payments.

# Have a slow and steady enlargement of links. Don’t do it fast.

# Have a permanent anchor text in your links. Think well before you make use of one.

# Use multiple anchor text

# Have links from the pages, which are updated regularly

Start a PPC campaign

Get traffic from PPC campaign starting from Google Adwords and you could get instant traffic from the day you launched your site. You could work on your budget and come up with a figure where you could make some money after spending on Pay per click. In the mean time, you could make the list of keywords, which works, for you in the Adwords campaign and incorporate them into your site.

Add new pages

Get into habit of adding minimum of 1 content rich page to your site every day. This will not only prepare your site for higher traffic but also get your site crawled by search engines regularly. This could bring your site out of sandbox faster.

How and Why to Avoid the SEO Mania

August 27th, 2007

The Why

But what is the reality of reaching a number 1 position on any of the big three search engines – Google, Yahoo, and MSN – and staying there? Somewhere between a remote possibility to impossible.

Why? Because there are well over 16 million websites battling for the number 1 position on “any” given day. Talk about too much competition for one, unique goal. You’d have more luck betting on the lottery, a game of blackjack, or a horse race.

It’s true, my opinion runs against the tide of SEO advocates – but let your own experience speak for itself. Are you number one on any of the big three? Do you understand the Google sandbox? Most people don’t. It is absolutely a waste of your online time to get caught up in this mania when there are sane alternatives available.

“So Gary, what’s the solution”? I am glad you asked. Let’s take a look at some “realistic” and doable activities that will bring you increased web traffic.

The How

You can…

1) Develop or buy a valuable, high demand product to sell (Ex: Microsoft Windows software)

2) Write great, useful news content for your readers (CNN.com and USA Today.com)

3) Create a web tool with great content that people need (Yahoo.com)

4) Devise a unique business model for an old market concept (auctions on ebay.com)

5) Get a cutting edge product or service that has an absolute or near monopoly and has mass-market appeal.

6) Write content-rich articles in an area in which you are the expert and submit them to related websites.

7) Write a weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly newsletter related to your interests.

8) Ask other webmasters to exchange their website addresses with yours.

9) Submit a free ebook that you have written to other websites with your website address and contact information included in the ebook.

10) Provide a free service to your niche market and submit ads to other websites.

11) Sell hard-to-find products at an attractive price.

12) Advertise on other websites, like Dollarsforever.com

These dozen ideas are only a handful of traffic attracting solutions for your website. Choose as many as you like. The end result should be more visitors to your website who are interested in what YOU have to offer.

Good luck and success!

How to make a link page and outbound link structure?

August 15th, 2007

This is a major question, which comes in mind of every SEO, link
building company and webmaster’s that what kind of link page
should be on their site or what is the best way of giving
outbound link. Every body need links and to get it one has to
give back some thing in return unless your contents are so good
that the site is voluntarily linked by others. To give back link
you need some link page or some other way of giving outbound
links. What method should be adopted for outbound links
structuring. In my opinion you can adopt following:

1. The best way to give outbound link is to give links within
the content page as it is most useful for users who read your
site contents. This method of linking is natural and long
lasting as search engines want that the pages should be made for
users and not for the search engines.

2. You can make 4 to 6 resources pages but each page should be
on particular theme and object of the page should match the
theme of your site. In such a way you will provide the users
more related resources on same topic at one place. It will help
you in making an authority page.

3. You can also adopt the traditional style which is used in
research papers as well as books also where links are given at
the end of the page referred to as more references and
resources. It gives more information to the users about any
particular topic thus enriching their knowledge more. There are
many other ways of making link page but the most common is to
have a long page with huge list of sites on one single page and
linking each site with its title or optimized anchor text
without having any relevance between the sites. Such pages never
bring traffic rather we just make it only for search engines,
which is no doubt a Spam. Google mentioned in its SEO guidelines
“Make pages for users, not for search engines “. Search engines
are well aware of such kind of link pages and are definitely to
be treated by search engines as “Link Farm” and will be
penalized.

Search Engine Visibility - The Mantra of Corporate Profitability

August 7th, 2007

The corporate fundamentals are par excellence! The product is unsurpassable and the website is a web designer’s dream in creativity and design – but there is a vacuum – of potential online customers! – The website lacks the basic ingredient of success – Search Engine Visibility! – which is what search engine optimization is all about.

Increasing the search engine visibility is vital to any online business. To illustrate Google alone gets as many as 250 million searches a day – visualize the magnitude of the potential market out there if one were to get the all important visibility factor right!

Search engine visibility is not merely about obtaining top positions in search results – rather it is about designing, writing, conceptualizing and creating a website. This is done exclusively for the site visitors and helping them find what they are searching for using the modality of search engines – the basic navigation tool over the internet.

The concept of building the site first and focusing on the visibility factor later is like building the car first and worrying about the quality index later! This fallacy can translate into a financial loss to the Corporate amounting to thousands of dollars.

Web designing should be executed with in - built user and search engine friendly parameters.

The reason to exist for any business enterprise is profitability both financial and social. The cornerstone of financial profitability is predictably maximizing profits, which is governed by an array of management and marketing tools.

The exponential growth of the web into an ocean of information has ushered in the era of the potential online customer turning to exploring the websites.

The corporate of today then is anonymous without a corporate website. The website provides an insight to the corporate profile, information and services. A strong website without search engine visibility is an untapped potential, which can only hurt the corporate bottom line and the stakeholders. Consequently, a strong website coupled with high search engine visibility is a near invisible weapon in the hands of a dynamic corporate.

The search engines are the basic navigation aids for the potential online customer and are entrusted with the daunting task of selecting from millions of web sites and pages when responding to online queries. The search engines undoubtedly favor “search friendly” sites and this is where search engine visibility comes into play.

Search engine optimization and increasing the visibility is then the order of the day if the corporate visibility is to sustain and co – exist.

The search engine centric approach cannot be utilized in isolation. It should ideally strike a delicate balance between being a search engine friendly and a user-friendly website.

Increase that Search engine visibility and watch the queries pour in, then work on the conversion index for without the potential customer queries there will be no conversion Index!

SEO For Ecommerce

July 25th, 2007

Ranking well under the free listings in the major search engines basically mean one thing – Lots of free, recurring, and targeted traffic. Major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN can be very powerful weapons in your internet marketing, if you know how to optimize your website to rank highly for your keywords. This article will focus on how you can optimize your website to rank on the top positions in search engines.

Getting listed on search engines is one thing, optimizing for top rankings is a totally different thing altogether. If you type in any keyword, the results shown may run into the millions of pages. Visitors would normally focus their attention on the first page of their search results, and few would browse to more than the first three pages. It is thus crucial to rank your website on the first page for your target keywords, or visitors would not find your site at all.

The three major search engines you should focus on are Google, Yahoo and MSN. Together, these search engines constitute more than 90% of the searches done online. With an audience reach of more than 50% of the internet community, Google is, by far, the most powerful search engine for free listings. Because its results are completely determined by algorithms, its listings are totally unbiased and ‘pure’. Other search engines may contain sponsored listings as well as free listings. Thus, visitors are likely to go straight to Google when looking for ‘pure’ search results, and this is the search engine you should focus on for optimization.

Note that since Google changes its algorithm very frequently, you have to continually keep updated on the latest changes to the search engine industry to keep your site on the top of search engines.

Search engine optimization (especially for Google) basically comprises of two factors: on-page optimization and off-page optimization. On-page optimization involves the manipulation of page components like titles, content and text links, to rank well for Google. Off-page optimization involves getting more links from other websites directed to your website.

On-page optimization. There are several on-page ranking factors for your website:

1) Title tag. When giving your website your title, you should include only your main keywords. The title must also be as concise and short as possible, and not include many redundant words. Do not include words like ‘and’, you can instead use symbols like a ‘dash’ to separate your title words. Fewer unnecessary words would give each of the other title keywords greater weight, and thus a higher ranking for your site.

2) Good content. All search engines base their search results on the content you have on your webpages, and how well they relate to the keywords you want to optimize your website for. It is best if you write your website content on your own to prevent copyright violations, and to be able to control exactly the content you want to place on your website. Search engine spiders like Googlebot also determine your ranking based on the keyword density on your website. Keyword density is the ratio of the number of times that your keywords appear throughout your content to the total number of words. When writing the content, you should place your keywords evenly throughout your content. Use your keyword once in every one to two paragraphs, and also once in the first and last paragraphs.

3) Header tags. The Header 1 tags of your website should include your main keywords, and the Header 2 tags should include your secondary keywords.

4) Bolding and Italicizing. Whenever possible, you can bold or italicize your keywords throughout your content, as search engines to place greater weight on bold or italic words.

Off-page optimization. Off-page ranking factors are really what make a HUGE difference to your rankings, and search engines like Google may place up to 90% of their emphasis on off-page factors. They can mean a difference between ranked in the thousands, or on the first page. From this you can see the great importance of focusing on off-page optimization. The off-page factors are:

1) The number of websites linking to your website. Commonly known as ‘link popularity’, this is one of the prime factors that determine your ranking on search engines. Link popularity is the measure of the number of websites linking to your website, and search engines like Google place strong emphasis on it, because more backlinks to your website generally means that your website is a better or more important resource for people. Thus, as far as possible, try to secure as many links from as many websites as possible. The most common method is to write personal emails to webmasters to ask for their link to your website, and provide a reciprocal link back to their website if they require it. This is where your website content plays an important role as well. If your website is full of informative content and resources, then webmasters would be more than happy to link to your website, as their visitors would also benefit from your useful content.

You can also join link exchange communities like http://www.linkmetro.com. Such communities list many websites willing to exchange links with others. This free services only require you to provide a reciprocal link back to the website you are exchanging links with, in return.

2) The relevancy of the websites linking to your website. Search engines rank highly those websites with many relevant websites linking to them. The higher the number of relevant websites linking to your website, the higher your search engine rankings will be. It would not help your search engine rankings much if you have hundreds of unrelated websites linking to yours, but they may still boost your rankings a little because these are still considered valid links from many different websites. However, as far as possible, try to solicit links from relevant websites instead of non-relevant ones.

3) The importance of the websites linking to your website. Google measures the importance of websites with their PageRank (PR) system. It is a scale ranging from 1 to 10. Pages with very high importance are given a very high PR, and vice versa. The scale is exponential, which means that it gets increasingly harder to increase your PR. If a website with very high PR links to your website, that shows that their webmaster places a high value on your website, and your site has content worthy to be shown to their visitors. This will, in turn, give your webpage a higher PR. For example, if a website of PR 6 links to you, then your PR may rise from 1 to maybe 2 or 3. Thus, in addition to a higher PR, higher search engine results are also attained if many websites with high PR link to yours.

If you have a new website that has not been indexed in Google yet, then you should try to get links from high PR websites. Some experts claim that if you have many high PR websites linking to yours, your website would be indexed in Google automatically, even without using the Search Engine Submission Form.

4) The anchor text of the link pointing to your website. Links pointing to your website should have your main keywords in the link. For example, if you want to rank well for ‘search engine optimization’, then the link pointing to your website should read ‘search engine optimization’, and not other unrelated words.

5) The IP addresses of the websites linking to your website. Whenever possible, you should get links from many different websites, instead of links on many pages from the same website. Same websites would show the same IP address, and Google prefers many links located on different IP addresses.

Although this article focuses mainly on Google, the optimization techniques also apply well for Yahoo and MSN. That is why you find that websites of high popularity can be found among the first pages of most major search engines. Remember to place more emphasis on off-page optimization than on-page optimization. Your website would be well optimized for most search engines if you follow the guides on this article.

Search Engine Optimization Starts With The Competition

July 22nd, 2007

Analyzing your competition is a good place to start when
optimizing your web site for search engine placement. SEO or
search engine optimization is about topping your competition. By
looking first at web sites that rank high for your key word
phrases you will have an understanding of the time and cost
involved to have high rankings in the search engines. If you are
going after a competitive keyword phrase the amount of time
involved will dramatically increase.

When analyzing the competition, search for your keyword phrase
or phrases in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Look at the top sites and
especially look at the sites that rank high in all three of the
major search engines. You now have a list of competitor web
sites; these are your targets to pick off one by one.

Check your competitors’ backlinks or links to them from other
web sites; this is going to be the best indicator of how much
effort you are going to have to put into your search engine
optimization project. You can check backlinks in Google and MSN
by typing link:www.yourdomain.com. In Yahoo you would type
link:http://www.yourdomain.com. Yahoo also has a special command
that will show you all the links to an entire web site. This can
be done by typing linkdomain:www.yourdomain.com. Now you can see
all the links to the home page and sub-pages in a web site. The
linkdomain command is the most helpful when evaluating links. Be
sure to check links in all three major search engines so you do
not miss anything. Also check backlinks on competitors
sub-pages. You will not need as many deep links but this can
make a big difference when trying to get a keyword to rank on a
sub page.

When evaluating your competitors’ links, keep in mind that this
can be a link source for your web site. See if the web sites
linking to your competitors accept web site link submissions.
When submitting to other sites use your keyword phrase for your
anchor text when ever possible.

Using the Google toolbar can be helpful too when evaluating
links. Google assigns each page a page rank score based on a 1
to 10 scale with 10 being the highest. Do not solely look at a
page’s page rank score; it is better that the page be on topic
rather than an irrelevant topic and a high score.

Next look at the competitors’ title tags; are they using
keywords in the tag? Be sure to check the keywords tag and
description tag - I always find good keywords this way. There
are some great free SEO tools on the internet that will automate
these processes. Just do a search for free SEO tools and you
will have a lot of tools with different and unique features for
your needs.

Links are very important but if you are smart you will not need
as many to beat out the competition. Build your inbound links
slow and steady, and from a variety of sources. Make sure to use
your keyword phases in your anchor text and vary the text for
some of the links. This will appear natural to the search
engines and should help you to avoid over optimization or spam
penalties. If you are trying to acquire one hundred inbound
links to your web site, space your acquisitions out over a three
month period or longer. One hundred backlinks appearing all at
once looks very unnatural especially if you do not keep building
backlinks at that rate. Make sure you have well written relevant
content. When optimizing your web site stay with in all search
engine guidelines. The guidelines will give you a good idea of
what and what not to do for you web site to rank well in the
search engines. You do not want all your hard work to go to
waste because of an over aggressive tactic or simple mistake
that is outside of the search engine guidelines.

High Search Engine Rankings - A Long Term Strategy

July 16th, 2007

The last 1.5 years have shown major changes in search engine behavior across the board. Algorithms change at random dates. Websites that ranked great in search results are suddenly completely wiped out from the search index. It becomes less and less predictable what a certain change to your website will get for results. A major change to a website or the way how it is promoted could have a major impact on search engine success for that website.

Webmasters need to gear to up to stay ahead of the game. As changes cannot easily be reversed to re-establish search engine ranking a website could be dead in the water for 3-6 months before it eventually recovers. It might actually not recover at all and becomes dead internet real estate. The difficulty every webmaster is facing - each major search engine uses different criteria to judge a website and how high it will be listed in search results. Success in MSN does not necessarily mean success in Google or Yahoo and vice versa.

To further see the impact of search engine changes one also has to consider who is affected most. The “aggressive” webmaster with lots of affiliate shopping websites and websites mainly build to generate advertising income will certainly see a different impact compared to a webmaster that is going a much more conservative way. There is a major difference in building a website for short-term success (or mid-term for the matter in Internet terms) and in building a website for long-term success.

Search engines will (or partially already have) develop filters to sort out websites with certain type of content or that promote certain type of services. This way they hope to increase the quality of the search results and to provide better quality of service to their clients/visitors.

Webmasters looking for long-term success need to change the way how they operate to succeed. Unless you have a lot of money you can throw at the problem (advertising, marketing), you need to work very conservative in regards to search engine optimization and how to achieve high search engine listings/rankings. Plan projects a long time in advance. Buy domain names way ahead of schedule and place some content on them to get them indexed and accounted for. A domain name being 2 years old or more (and indexed for that period of time) is more valuable than a 2 week old domain name registration with some duplicate content. Slowly build back links to the new domain. Search engines seem to be looking at back links in a way that a large increase of back links in a very short period of time is less valuable or reason to suspect brute force search engine optimization (brute force SEO) which can result in complete removal from the search index. So, a strategy of slowly increasing the number of back links is more desirable and will be more effective for the long term success. Do not do anything on a website that does not look ‘natural’ in regards to growth. Adding 1,000+ pages in a day does not look natural. Adding 25 pages of content over a week looks much more natural. Time does a good thing. A site becomes more popular and also gets more back links. With the increased popularity an increase in the growth rate does not look as much problematic anymore. Now adding 50 pages of content in a week just matches the overall growth rate much better. And again - time passes by and the popularity goes up (ideal case). An increase in adding back links and content just looks more natural.

This sort of natural growth will be important to achieve search engine success in the future. The second key is good, high quality content and easy to read URLs. A combination of these two key ingredients will almost guarantee success in how your website is ranked in search engines.
