Big Players Bring High Speed Laptops to Everybody

September 2nd, 2008

Are you able to think back to the era when laptops for gaming were not so accessible? They were small volume sellers and big turnover producing notebooks. They were the notebook computers you constantly thought of but were out of your reach. Perhaps they weren’t the most practical but I still believe they were the best laptop computers. They typically created a lot of excitement but I don’t believe loads of people would go out and buy laptop computers at high prices. Sales will pick up though now that established manufacturers are entering the sector.

Gaming laptops are traditionally not affordable by everyone and big brands know they can take advantage of the giant markup even more with their bulk buying. It is an excellent chance for them to regain gross margins as the margins on mainstream notebook computers are so small these days. Companies of that class are aware they can get purchasers to buy laptop computers at overblown prices providing they represent it well. I think smaller retailers are extremely troubled about this. I think once it becomes marketed to the masses it will lose some of the desirability. Obviously the value of a well known brand name comes into play here.

The manufacturers new notebook computers are getting a large amount of accolades as being the best laptop computers from the press. This is one opportunity the smaller competitors must use to their benefit. In my point of view being able to specify the components you desire should be a deciding factor. These specific buyers are traditionally extremely well educated with the technology and can compare each of the specs by themselves. In the majority of cases the power is way more important than the styling for particular types of people. This is amazing news from a customers perspective. In the near future top of the line technology for your investment will be the result of this change. Though I say that, I am not really assured with my claims. Mobile technology is always advancing and the new innovations will typically be expensive on launch. Strong Competition always forces companies to do more and give increased value so that sounds hopeful.

Gaming Notebooks, Custom Built Notebooks And Budget Portables An Increasing Business

June 26th, 2008

Notebook computer shipments are approximately estimated to be approaching 127million units this year, which is massive! Taiwan, which is the capital manufacturing country of laptop computers is having trouble with the demand at present. It looks like once there are pending orders those will only escalate because demand for laptops is not dropping at all. It’s a rapidly changing market that is witnessing new trends all the time.

One of the popular trends is gaming laptops. You can actually get a very high spec for your money these days because even the up market technology is falling into the mass market area very quickly. I play games on my laptop on a frequent basis and must say I’m surprised how playable few of the demanding games are. Past problems with bulky, hot laptops for gaming are vanishing and new slimmer, attractive units are coming out. Extreme game players will always be more partial to their desktop gaming setup for performance and rightly so but it’s the usability laptops provide that influences people compromise on frame rates. Gaming laptops are the gauge of speed for the laptop computer trade and it will be good to see how the future technology fairs.

For the niche consumers using notebooks. With international manufacturers you normally don’t have an idea what they put into the notebook. By being able to decide exactly what you need you can even hold back some money in a couple of deals. The models found in stores are traditionally prebuilt based average, mass market users and well not everybody is standard now are they? You can get a far suitable notebook by getting it custom built. I like that idea that there are plenty of small sized brands giving good customer care for custom laptops. Yet a further good factor.

The forthcoming notebook technology will be exciting. Laptops purely for using the world wide web etc are being released in the market wave after wave. total new market has developed suddenly it looks. Ideally people would prefer a slim laptop computer with a 15″ screen. There are notebooks resembling this in the market already, just at costly prices. I am sure we’ll see ultra mobile gaming laptops in the near future. New ideas are seen every couple of months and I’m sure the next couple of months already holds a lot of promise for us geeks.

Peru wants archeology back from Yale

June 20th, 2008

Rising proudly at over 7500 feet high ( 2300 meters ), Inca citadel of Machu Picchu was so inaccessible that the Spanish conquerors were never able to found it. But in 1911 Yale historian Hiram Bingham rediscovered it, and between 1912 and 1915, directed the National Geographic Society in a series of expeditions that ended in many archaeological finds that were transferred to Yale University, allegedly with the permission of Peruvian president, Augusto Legua.

90 years later, Peruvian authorities wants all those objects back, and had notified the Yale University President that a lawsuit is being prepared in case that an amicable resolution would not be reached.

Although I found this kind of matters very, very complex, I think that the Peruvian claim must be taken in consideration. This would not only be a case of historical justice (in 1911 Peruvians authorities were not conscious of the artistic and historical value of the Inca artefacts) but also an uncommon opportunity to end with an old case of “art without context”.

This kind of claims had been historically futile. From the old one made by the Greek government to the British Museum asking for the Elgin marbles, to the recent demand made by the Nigeria government around stolen Nok objects. But also remember that the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Atlanta has recently returned to Egypt the mummy of Pharaoh Ramesses I, given the “historical importance” of the object. So I will raise one question here: is it more historically important to a country the old, nasty corpse of an ancient King or the artistic artifacts from its most famous heritage city?

Mobile broadband searches hit peak

May 27th, 2008

The rapid update in the UK of mobile broadband internet as a consumer technology has (of course) been echo’d in the search engines with a seemingly inexorable increase in searches for “mobile broadband” over the past twelve months. However, a quick glance at the stats from both Hitwise and Google trends suggests that takeup has now fallen right off, or (at the very least) has hit a meaningful blip. Searches for “mobile broadband” and related phrases hit a peak in early April (or slightly earlier, according to Google Trends) and have fallen quite dramatically (rescued slightly by a recent rally).

Mobile broadband packages allow consumers to plug a ‘dongle’ (basically like a USB stick) into their laptop, and access broadband on the move from anywhere with a mobile phone signal. If you’re in a 3G area you can get up to 7.2Mb (according to the advertising), but even in 2G areas you can get a good, old-fashioned 56K dial up speed.

The fall off might simply be down the UK’s seasonal Q2 slump in broadband demand, which doesn’t really pick up again until the Autumn. However one might have expected the growth for such a new and trendy technology to be slightly more robust.

A quick glance at the Google SERPs for mobile broadband reveal that the main providers - T-Mobile, Orange, Three and Vodafone - all feature heavily, and also show significant competition in the paid search results. Several mobile broadband comparison sites are already up and running, plus the ubiquitous Wikipedia.

Buying An Energy Efficient Home Appliance

May 21st, 2008

With too many brands powered with each one’s aggressive marketing strategies conquering the market, the hapless consumer is terribly confused in his selection of a new energy efficient home appliance. If you are more concerned about your hard earned money, then the choice becomes a difficult task indeed. Ultimately, quite often, you end up buying the cheapest item available in the market.

The cost of owning a home appliance has three basic components viz, the initial purchase price, the cost of repairs & maintenance and the cost involved in operating it. To determine how much one will spend over the lifetime of the home appliance, one has to necessarily take cognizance of all these costs. The appliance with the lowest initial purchase price, or even the one with the best repair record, need not necessarily be the one that costs the least to operate.

The more energy efficient an appliance is, the less it costs to run, and the lower your utility bills. Using less energy is good for the environment too and you can reduce air pollution and help conserve natural resources. Even if two models look the same from the outside, less-obvious inside features can mean a big difference in your monthly utility bills. Most of the differences are on the inside - in the motors, compressors, pumps, valves, gaskets and seals, or in electronic sensors that make appliances “smarter.”

Tips for shopping

1. Know where to shop.

Appliance outlets, electronics stores and local retailers stock different brands and models of home appliances. Dealers also sell appliances through print catalogs and the Internet. Do a little bit of market research first before resorting to real shopping.

2. Select the size and style.

Take the measurement of the appliance to make sure that your new purchase will fit into the available space with you. Make sure that you have enough room to open the door or lid fully and enough clearance for ventilation. This will help you in narrowing down your choices as you settle on the best capacity and style.

3. Compare the performance of different brands and models.

Glance through the manufacturer’s product literature. Decide which features are important to you. Do not hesitate to ask questions about how the different models operate, their repair history, safety features, extent of energy consumption etc. Manufacturers are expected to use standard test procedures to prove the energy use and efficiency of their products.

4. Estimate how much the appliance will cost to operate.

The more energy an appliance uses, the more it will cost to run. The difference on your monthly utility bill can be significant, especially when the life of the appliance runs over 10 years. Even if the purchase price is higher, you could save money over the long run by choosing a model that’s more energy efficient.

5. Ask about special energy efficiency offers.

Enquire with the salesperson about the availability of cash rebates, low-interest loans or other incentive programs for energy-efficient product purchases and explore the possibility of qualifying for such incentives.

Are You Ticking People Off With Your E-mails?

April 14th, 2008

Even now that e-mail has been around for several years, some of us
still aren’t “getting the message” when it comes to being both
effective and polite. While e-mail is a quick, easy, and informal way
to exchange information, it still needs some TLC in order to do its
job, which is to *communicate*!

One statistic says the average American worker receives approximately
50 e-mails a day — that’s a lot of information to read through. And
this number sounds low to me — I get around 100 a day! Numbers like
these mean that your little message is literally competing for your
recipient’s attention. You’d better make sure your e-mail tells her
what you want her to know — fast!

While I have a mile-long list of e-mail atrocities that I could
share, here are the four most common mistakes I see in my inbox every
day. By paying attention to these simple points, you can easily
ensure your messages come across clearly and professionally … and
that they actually get READ!

Mistake #1: “Dissing” the Subject

Ever receive an e-mail with an empty subject line? That drives me
nuts! It’s simply a courtesy to tell your reader what info you’re
delivering. When receiving a list of new e-mails, we all use the
subject lines to quickly determine what each one is about and whether
we need to open it right away.

The more info you give in the subject line, the better. For example,
instead of just titling your e-mail “Meeting,” give me the
details: “Marketing Meeting Set for Nov. 9.” This way I know
instantly that you’re talking about the Marketing Department, *and*
that I have a meeting to go to on Nov. 9.

Also keep in mind that many e-mail systems cut-off long subject
lines, so shoot for *six words or less.*

Mistake #2: Rambling On and On and On and…

Because we’re all receiving way too much information every day, it’s
important to make your point FAST and CLEARLY. Have you ever gotten
an e-mail that’s so long you put off reading it, and later discovered
it had some important information at the end? An associate of mine
used to do this — she’d send a drawn-out missive about her
enlightening trip to Bali, and at the very end of her message she’d
sneak in something urgent like, “Oh and the client will be here today
at 2 p.m. instead of 4.” Yikes!

Fire your “biggest gun” first. If you have something important to
tell me, or if you want me to take any sort of action, be sure to
make your point in the first few sentences. Otherwise I may not read
it.

Try to keep your entire e-mail shorter than *two computer screens* —
one screen is best. For long, detailed messages, provide a brief list
or summary at the top, and break up the copy below with subheads.

Or, better yet, split up your points into a few different e-mails.
For example, if you need to tell me something important about my
taxes, ask if I’m available for a conference call tomorrow, and fill
me in about your hot date from last weekend, make each subject a
separate e-mail. Not only will you ensure that I’ll read each point,
but if I need to get back to you on something, I can just save that
particular message.

Mistake #3: Funky Formatting

Your e-mail program may let you underline, italicize, boldface, and
color your words, but when your recipients read your messages, these
features may not carry through. Text formatting rarely translates
between e-mail systems, and your reader may instead get a garbled
mess of abstract characters (like this: “##@@!!&&&<<<>>>”) that
muddle your message.

A safe way to emphasize a word is to place an *asterisk* before and
after the word, as I do here often in my e-zine text. Typing words in
all-caps is another option. But while caps make an impact when used
occasionally, they’re extremely hard to read.

THE TOPS AND BOTTOMS OF CAPITAL LETTERS ARE COMPLETELY ALIGNED,
MAKING IT HARDER TO QUICKLY DIFFERENTIATE WORDS. NEVER TYPE YOUR
WHOLE MESSAGE IN ALL CAPS UNLESS YOU WANT TO IRRITATE SOMEONE,
BECAUSE IT COMES ACROSS AS “SCREAMING.”
ARE YOUR EYES HURTING YET?
OK, SORRY!

Typing in all caps also labels you as an Internet newbie — many
computer first-timers are inexplicably attracted to that caps lock
key. (Someone should start an intervention group for that.)

Mistake #4: Operating Undercover

Ever get an e-mail from someone and you just can’t figure out who it
is? I’ve had to explain many times to associates that e-mail
addresses like “fuzzybear4u@wackomail.net” don’t quite let your
recipients know whom is calling. Many people may even delete your e-
mail, mistaking your message for spam. (And goofy screen names don’t
do much good for your professional image either.)

Even if your identity is obvious based on your e-mail address, it’s
still a courtesy to sign your e-mail. And even better, include your
*signature file.* You know what a signature (or “sig”) file is,
right? It’s that little blurb with contact info that you can
automatically insert at the end of every e-mail you send.

Most e-mail programs now allow you to use sig files — even AOL 6.0.
At the least, just list your name, title, company, phone, e-mail
address, and Web site URL. And don’t think that including a sig file
in every e-mail is overkill — I find it wonderfully handy to grab a
client’s phone number off of her last e-mail to me.

The moon and the sun

April 2nd, 2008

Astronomers found that the moon movement is 18 kilometers per a second, the Earth movement is 15 kilometers per a second, whereas the sun movement is 12 kilometers per a second. The sun, the earth & the moon all run & the distance between them is regularized. Quran explained this fact before fourteen centuries. It says “And the sun Runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him) the exalted in Might, the All Knowing. And the moon we have measured for her Mansions (to traverse) Till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date - stalk. It is not permitted to the sun to catch up the moon, nor can the night outstrip the Fay: Each (just) swims along in (its own orbit) (According to Law) [36:38-40]. What does “Ali runs And Mohammed moves and Ali cannot reach Mohammed runs but Ali does not reach Mohammed. Here Allah the Excelled in might says “And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him” Then He says ” It is not permitted to the sun to catch-up the moon” This means that the moon is meant to be before the sun where as the sun runs and can not catch up it. Because the speed of the moon is 18 kilometers & that of the earth is 15 kilometers while that of the sun is 12 kilometers. Whatsoever the sun runs it will not catch up the moon. But what makes the moon also to retain its mansions while it can leave them? The astronomers found that the moon runs in a zigzag swing and not in a straightforward line. The moon runs in this manner to retain its mansions and locations. In this manner Allah organized and systemized the orbiting &more movements of all of them so that they retain their orbiting traces & do not depart them. Therefore, we have the regular succession of Night & Daytime, seasons etc…. Don’t you think it is an excellent determination? Is it possible that it has come only by chance? No, it has not come by chance because chance cannot create such excellent & systematic norms of the universe. Allah has created all this & creates this systemic cosmic norms. PHP Pear Packages :: Why they are so important to php developers?

March 22nd, 2008

PEAR is short for “PHP Extension and Application Repository”.
It is a standard and structured library of open-sourced code for
PHP users, All PHP code is written in standard style known as
PCS ( PEAR Coding Standards ),it helps in maintaining the
collaboration between PEAR developers. It is also helpful in
quality and portability management. Using PCS, PEAR contributors
can provide consistent and similar coding standard packages.

PEAR is a community-driven project. The project has been founded
by Stig S. Bakken in 1999 and quite a lot of people have joined
the project since then.

The code in PEAR is partitioned in “packages”. Each package is a
separate project with its own development team, version number,
release cycle, documentation and a defined relation to other
packages (including dependencies). Packages are distributed as
gzipped tar files with a description file inside, and can be
installed on your local system using the PEAR installer.

Nowadays it is included in the standard distribution of the PHP
installation and default include_path of php.ini in set to
include the files from the folder where php pear packages
normally installed.

But why PEAR is so useful? PEAR has more than 330 packages
ranging from HTTP authentication to XML web services and
complicated math equations for engineering calculations.
Database management can be done using DB packages, and mail can
be handled using mail packages. There are packages to create the
forms and do their validation automatically. You can also create
and validate the CSS and HTML of your code.

There are more than 25 packages categories like Authentication,
Benchmarking, Caching,Configuration, Console, Database, Date and
Time, Encryption, Event, File Formats, File System, Gtk
Components, HTML,HTTP, Images, Internationalization, Logging,
Mail, Math, Networking,Numbers, Payment, Processing,
Science,Semantic Web, Streams, Structures, System, Text,
Validate, Web Services, XML. Using pear, a less experience
person can handle the any major technical requirement in their
PHP programs.

But PEAR has one major issue with its documentation. Its
documentation is not up to the mark and is probably the weakest
part of the project. Most modules have some documentation
available in the PEAR Manual but much of this is incomplete and
crucially there are no links from the package directory entries
to the documentation for each package. It’s a major short coming
because PEAR has a great deal of excellent code that many
developers are completely unaware of. The documentation normally
created by PHP Documentator.

Some web sites like http://www.zend.com/pear/tutorials/index.php
and
http://www.phpkitchen.com/index.php?/archives/668-PEAR-Tutorials.
html has some good collection of PEAR tutorials.

“God Does Not Play Dice (with the Universe)”

March 9th, 2008

This is the famous quip by Einstein often quoted in the literature. By itself, taken out of context it is difficult to see its meaning. Actually this line was a part of a letter written by Einstein to Max Born to express his dissatisfaction with Quantum Theory. Put in proper context it reads as follows:

“Quantum mechanics is very impressive. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory produces a good deal but it hardly brings us closer to the secret of the Old One. I am at all events convinced that He does not play dice.”

The last three words (put in parentheses in the quote) were not there but implied in the context. ‘Old One’ was the nickname Einstein used for God. He disliked quantum theory for several reasons, one was its probabilistic nature. In any experiment with several possible outcomes the theory can give only the probability of any particular outcome; it cannot predict the outcome. When you throw a dice there is no way of telling what number it will come up with. All one can have is the probability of a certain number showing. Einstein on the other hand firmly believed that any correct and complete theory should be able to predict the outcome with certainty. The reference to the universe comes up because of the question - Why the universe is the way it is? Was it just a probability showing up? If subatomic world is the basis for matter (and hence, for the universe), quantum theory says yes. That is what irritated Einstein. According to him in any physical situation given the same conditions the outcome should always be the same. Not so in quantum theory. No matter how complete our knowledge of a subatomic system, it is not possible to predict with certainty what the results of a measurement will be. Uncertainty is an essential feature of the quantum world.

Another feature of quantum theory that Einstein was vehemently opposed to was ‘action at a distance’, which he called ’spooky’. Formally it is called non-locality in physics and implies that communication between two objects (or persons) can occur without any medium or means of communication. The notion of locality had been so firmly entrenched in physics that it was unthinkable to consider the opposite. Relativity theory stated that nothing could travel faster than light and there cannot be any instantaneous communication. Non-locality meant that information was transmitted from one object to the other instantaneously in some mysterious manner.

Einstein, therefore, maintained till the very end of his life that quantum theory was incomplete. For several years he had an ongoing debate with Neils Bohr each trying to prove the other wrong. Finally he devised the famous EPR thought experiment to prove his point, especially about non-locality. Subsequent investigations based on the thought experiment (theoretical as well as experimental) have proved him wrong. Luckily he never knew. It all happened long after his death.

Dharmbir Rai Sharma is a retired professor with electrical engineering and physics background. He obtained his M.S. degree in physics in India and Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Cornell University. He has taught at universities here and also in Brazil, where he spent sometime. He maintains a website http://www.cosmosebooks.com devoted mainly to philosophy and science.

Computer Backup

March 7th, 2008

It’s happened to most of us; we’ve lost a document or a folder
because there was no computer backup. Whether you lost a few
lines you were typing because of power failure or your entire
system crashed, computer backup is the only way to prevent such
mishaps from destroying your files. Computer backup can be basic
or sophisticated, costly or simply the price of your average
floppy disk. Depending on your needs and the importance of your
files, you will need a computer backup system that reflects your
budget and your lifestyle.

Many computer users prefer to keep it simple and back up their
data with a floppy disk or by copying and pasting documents.
This is the most basic form of computer backup, but it is not
satisfactory for everyone. Floppy disks often wear out, and you
can have files stored on floppy disks for years that might be
not perform if they are stored on old disks. On the other hand,
if you use your files quite frequently, your floppy disk could
wear out, which creates another problem for your floppy disk
storage. If you simply store your document elsewhere on your
computer, it might not survive a complete computer crash,
although minor annoyances should not interfere with your files.
Because of problems with viruses, computer crashes are becoming
a more frequent occurrence for many PC users, and therefore,
computer backup software is the best option for many consumers.

There are many files that are worth the time and investment
involved in obtaining good computer backup software. Examples of
such files are:

Bank records Personal documents Digital photos Address
books Software downloads Special projects

The best computer backup software not only creates a copy of
your documents automatically, but it uses encryption algorithms
to protect your information from unauthorized access and
spyware. Your filename will also be encrypted to protect against
intrusions. Most computer backup software is quite user
friendly, and new files can be added instantly at the click of a
mouse.

In addition to many great features, most computer backup
software will enable you to:

Create new backup programs Select files and folders for
backup Define compression settings Choose target of backup
Store backup info in various locations

The best computer backup programs are not rigid, but allow the
user the flexibility to choose where and how their files will be
stored. You can choose to have everything copied automatically,
or specify which files you wish to have a backup. If you have a
large volume of material to store, you can select compression
settings, which will minimize the size of your documents and
will enable you to store more information. You can also choose
where you want your backup information to be stored, and you can
place the data in various locations automatically, for instance,
in your hard drive, USB stick, Network folder, CD, DVD and
Remote FTP Server. You can also create a simultaneous backup
communication between a remote FTP server and local storage
devices.

Your computer backup software should provide easy user
interface, the option to store your data in multiple versions
and the capability to restore your files to their original
folders. Most programs have a very easy to use help menu, and
many have service lines to help customers who wish to
communicate with an assistant. You can also obtain special
features for your computer backup software, such as a disaster
recovery CD or DVD, which will get your computer back up and
running after a crash. You can have peer to peer backups for
extra protection and virus scanning capabilities that will
safeguard your valuable files against tampering.

Computer backup software varies in prices, and it is worthwhile
to invest in the best program you can afford, especially if your
business depends on valuable files. Don’t let an unexpected
computer crash destroy your valuable data, but invest in
computer backup software today.
