What are You Reflecting?

March 21st, 2008

Have you looked in the mirror lately? I mean, really looked in
the mirror. What did you see? Were you surprised by the image
being reflected back to you? Did it look like you? Did it meet
the image you hold of yourself in your mind?

If it didn’t match, what were the differences? What was the
image telling you?

What do you think the image is that you are projecting out to the
world? Does it match your inner view? How has it changes from a
year ago? 5 years? 10 years?

Think about the image you have of yourself. Has it evolved over
the years as you have? Do you still see yourself in your 20’s
even though you are in your 50’s?

So often, we lock an image in our mind of who we are, never
upgrading it or enhancing it as we change in the world. We
upgrade our technology, cell phones, computers, etc, however we
forget to upgrade our inner view of ourselves.

Think about how much you’ve changed and ask yourself if your
image is really outdated? Is your inner image stuck in the 70’s
and disco, while your outer self approaches the world in the
latest fashions?

Internal imaging is not only about your body image, but it is
about your entire being, mind, body and spirit. Body image is
such a powerful subject in the media of late with actresses
coming forward to speak about their struggles with food and
image.

While the pressure they are under comes so much from their
industry, it is also self imposed. Insecurity about their
appearance existed deep within their being and rattled their
inner foundation long before the external pressure began.

Think about your inner foundation. Is it stable or rickety and
swayed by the latest fashion model to be on the cover of a major
magazine? If you don’t feel stable and sure of yourself and the
image you have of your self, what steps can you take?

First, identify that the image is just that- an image. The image
is not a real thing, but just a picture or idea you took and
filed away in your memory. That snapshot has been subjected to
years of media influence, family and society influences.

The snapshot is no longer a clear picture, its been subjected to
many layers of distortion and became an image that resembles a
digitally enhanced, high-tech animation or caricature. It is no
longer the truth.

After many years of distortion, it requires clarity. Sorting
through the layers may take some time and concentrated effort.
It takes patience and commitment, along with a good dose of
compassion and self nurturing.

As you peel away the layers, each step of the way its important
to clarify the truth. Ask yourself if the image you are seeing
is the core truth for your being. Listen to your intuition.
Feel the answer deep within your belly. Does the belief attached
to that image ring true? Is it your belief or society’s? Is it
your mother’s voice you hear, or maybe another’s?

Then ask what motivates that particular image. Is it motivated
to please mother? Is it motivated to please father’s image of
you? Could it be motivated by attracting attention, or by not
wanting to attract attention? What is the deepest motivator?
Could it be motivated by aloneness and the quest to never be
alone? Could it be motivated by comparison and the need to meet
some fictional inner standard?

Once you have identified your motivators, you can choose to
address the core issues. You can face the emotion that is
connected to the belief and release it, then replace the belief
with a new truth.

You define your own truths. You create your own images. You
define who you are and how you choose to present yourself to the
world. It’s all up to you. You are the creator of your world.
Regain your power from the fears you have held within you. Call
on friends, family, or counseling for assistance in sorting the
facts from the fiction.

You are the only one who knows the truth for you. Others can try
to define it for you and tell you who they want you to be, or you
can look to others who will help you ask questions and uncover
your own truth.

Seek empowerment, not mass media and pre-determined molds to try
to fit in to. Seek your inner path and find the light of your
own truth, then radiate that light out for the world to see.

You are a unique being with your own inner beauty and shining
light. If you recognize it, own it and value it, then so will
others. Let that be the new image you show to the world.

Dealing With Stretch Marks

March 8th, 2008

Stretch marks are something most people suffer from to some extent or other. For some of us the extent is very severe indeed, whereas for other people the case is pretty minor and not particularly noticeable. The other unfortunate thing about stretch marks is that there is absolutely no cure for them. Yes, I’m sorry to say it, but no matter what the latest highly priced creams and lotions promise, they will not get rid of your stretch marks!

However, that’s not to say that the appearance of stretch marks can’t be improved. In fact, there are several different methods that can be used to improve the appearance of stretch marks, ranging from particular creams and topical medications, to laser therapy and even abdominoplasty. Naturally, it’s always better to start with the simplest option, that of topical creams.

There are many over the counter products you can buy which will help your skin stay hydrated, and which will help keep it in good shape. Cocoa butter based creams are particularly good for this. Many people also swear by the use of creams, lotions and oils containing a high quantity of vitamin E. As for slightly stronger topical treatments, many doctors and dermatologists will prescribe Retin A or a similar vitamin A derivative treatment. These have often been shown to be quite effective, but shouldn’t be used by women who are or who are planning to become pregnant.

Laser therapy has also helped improve the appearance of stretch marks in some cases, although it has never been able to completely get rid of them. The only way you can actually get rid of some of your stretch marks is through a procedure like abdominoplasty (better known as a tummy tuck). Similar skin tuck operations can be performed on other areas of the body where the skin is loose too, such as the upper arms and thighs.

However, these procedures are only effective where there is excess skin. This commonly occurs in people who have either given birth or who have lost a lot of weight. Such surgery will also only remove the stretch marks on the skin that is removed, and there will generally be stretch marks remaining. However, tightening the skin can improve the appearance of those stretch marks as well.

The other way of improving your overall skin appearance is through healthy eating and exercise. By maintaining a healthy weight (and avoiding putting on weight quickly) you can avoid the appearance of further stretchmark development. Exercise and healthy eating also helps the skin maintain its tone and elasticity, and ensuring you drink enough water every day will help your skin maintain proper hydration which will keep it looking good too.

Are You Lucky or Unlucky in Life?

February 9th, 2008

In life I find there are two types of people.

There are “lucky” people and then there are those who are perceived as “unlucky”. I am sure that in your expat experiences around the world you have met both kinds and have friends or family back home who are either “lucky” or “unlucky”. Let’s explore the differences between the two?

Maybe the main difference between us lucky or unlucky expats and home-residents is that those who are “lucky” BELIEVE that they are, THINK that they are and EXPECT good and “lucky” things to happen to them. The result is that it does because that is what they are looking for. “Unlucky” people think of themselves this way because of all the bad things that have happened to them in the past. They BELIEVE they are “unlucky”, THINK they are and EXPECT that they will always be that way. Sure, they hope for good things, but expect bad things to happen. As a result bad things happen. It really is that simple, we receive what we expect.

“Lucky” people THINK, BELIEVE and EXPECT. “Unlucky” people also THINK, BELIEVE and EXPECT. So, why are the outcomes different? I believe that the difference is in the THOUGHT behind these words. What you think makes it true for you.

Life flows through us and it is forever changing. Have you explored the idea that it may just be that your destiny is not set in stone from the moment you were born. Could destiny truly be in your hands? Is it possible that HOW you decide to play this day out could determine your destiny for the day, the week and ultimately your future?

Your destiny is right now. What do you want to do with it? Things can be good and you can change things for the better, but this will only happen when you realize that you and only you holds the secret within you. When you wake up in the morning do you expect the worst or the best for the day? Be aware of your thoughts and watch your life unfold.

Your future is right here, right now … in your thought. What thought do you hold at this moment? How are you shaping your destiny?

Bariatric Surgery Contributes to Rise in Body Contouring Procedures in Michiana

November 14th, 2007

Elkhart, IN — A newly released report from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) details statistics and consumer attitudes toward cosmetic surgery in Indiana, and many of the numbers mirror similar trends in Michiana, according to Dr. Ronald Downs and Dr. Patrick Viscardi of The Centre, P.C.

ASAPS reports that 2003 saw a large increase in the number of body contouring procedures, with liposuction being the number one surgical procedure for both women and men. Other body contouring procedures increased by the following percentages: tummy tucks, 42%; lower body lifts, 127%; thigh lifts, 109%; and upper arm lifts, 68%.

“Some of these increases are attributable to the rise in bariatric surgery,” said Dr. Ronald Downs, a member of ASAPS. Bariatric surgery is a relatively new procedure that helps people lose massive amounts of weight. “Such massive weight loss can leave skin sagging, so people choose these body contouring procedures to remove excess skin and fat. We are seeing that bariatric surgery in Michiana is also on the upswing.”

As Indiana consumers continue to become more focused on looks, the facial procedures are also rising. The popularity of Botox in Indiana, for example, contributed to a dramatic rise nationwide in nonsurgical procedures (a 22% increase in 2003). Surgical facial procedures were also up by the following percentages: eyelid surgery in Elkhart and forehead lift in Michiana, 17% each; facelifts, 1% (the number of facelifts on men increased by 23%).

“We are finding that new techniques that help reduce recovery time for many facial procedures contribute to an increase in their popularity,” said Dr. Patrick Viscardi. “Most people find a lengthy recovery period inconvenient and costly. With these new techniques, people are back to their daily lifestyle more quickly.”

The Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank, sponsored by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), is the most comprehensive collection of data available on the number of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. ASAPS is the only organization providing 7-year multi-specialty data on the 38 top cosmetic procedures in Indiana. To see the complete set of ASAPS statistics go to www.surgery.org.

Plastic Surgery Advancements

November 12th, 2007

First the definition of Plastic Surgery is: Surgical repair of congenital or acquired deformities and the restoration of contour to improve the appearance and function of tissue defects. Development of this specialized branch of surgery received impetus from the need to repair gross deformities sustained in World War I. By the grafting of tissue or the use of artificial materials such as silicone, some remarkable restorations have become possible. Severe burns and the removal of fairly extensive skin cancers leave scars that must be covered by skin grafts; breast reconstruction after mastectomy is another application. In addition to correcting a disfigurement, plastic surgery is often needed to restore vital movement and function of tissues that have been destroyed. It is also performed for purely cosmetic purposes, such as improving the shape of a nose, bringing outstanding ears closer to the head, or lifting the skin to erase wrinkles. Modern plastic surgeons often employ CAT scans to produce computer-generated images that are used to plan or simulate complex reconstructive surgeries.

The very first descriptions of skin grafts date back to India circa 800 B.C., where they served to obstruct the facial hole resulting from nose amputations. During the Renaissance, Ambroise Paré developed the art of suture, leaving records in which he describes both the instruments and the technique employed. In the 19th century, new methods for operating were developed, ending earlier rudimentary and painful procedures. However, at that time the Catholic Church was strongly opposed to the advancement of science in general, and specifically opposed remodeling the human form. But in the 20th century, when Europe was confronted with the seriously mutilated faces of soldiers returning from the fronts of WWI, the imperative to repair them grew, and plastic surgery finally gained a respectable place in the medical profession.

Then World War II came and once again, plastic surgeons used their skills to help their countrymen. This led to more plastic surgery advances. Then by the 1950s, plastic surgery was fully integrated into the medical community. In the 1960s, the concept of plastic surgery grew in the consciousness of the American public as more physicians performed plastic surgery procedures. Plus in this decade, silicone started being used in plastic surgery and started becoming a part of our culture. Now in the 1970s, the plastic surgeon became one of the leading medical professions. And in the 1980s, plastic surgery was expanding all over the country. By the 1990s, there thousands of board-certified plastic surgeons and the numbers continue to grow, even today. Now there are thousands of plastic surgeons, offering a variety of plastic surgery procedures to patients not just in the United States, but all over the world.

Plastic surgery were it once was just for the very rich has become affordable for almost all Americans. Plastic surgery has truly come a long way and continues to make advancements in the complexity of procedures performed today.

Botox and Wrinkle Treatments – Do You Need Them To Keep Your Job?

November 9th, 2007

Why do you care about your appearance? Do you look in the mirror and wish you looked younger or better so your partner would find you more attractive? Perhaps you just want to have a skip in your step as you walk down the street feeling fresh and fabulous?

Or is it a little more serious than that?

Are you worried that those laughter lines around your eyes could mean you won’t get that promotion at work, or worse, lose your job altogether?

Well that’s the worry of a growing number of men and women who work in today’s increasingly competitive marketplace. And they’re not just in professions where being beautiful or good looking are traditionally important. More and more people fear that lines will make them look old and tired, which will give their boss the impression that they’re not keeping up, and they’re worried that a younger fresher looking employee will overtake them even though they’re not as experienced.

Worried men are increasingly using wrinkle-reducing Botox injections to hide signs of ageing. They often want Botox to remove lines which they believe could be seen as ‘worry lines’. They are frightened looking older or stressed will be a handicap in the jobs market.

Men want to look fresh faced, young and able to cope with a high-powered job and they now see treatments like Botox as a career investment. Not only that, but pictures of glamorous male celebrities and sport stars mean that guys are increasingly looking for glamour.

It’s interesting to note the degree to which attitudes have changed in terms of what is now considered suitable for men. It’s no longer considered vain for a man to look after his appearance, in fact it’s now becoming unacceptable, not to care.

Many practitioners report that men are increasingly coming through their doors. And they come from all walks of life, from city executives to construction workers. The trend is strongest in Big Cities like New York and London, but has also become apparent in smaller towns and cities.

But it’s not just men who are worried about the effect of their appearance on their careers. A recent survey showed that more than one-in-four women executives would consider cosmetic surgery to improve their career prospects, according to a survey.

The survey of women in the UK showed 28% would consider Botox treatments if they thought it would boost their career prospects. So it’s not just women who want to look good who are having Botox. Those who’d never have thought of it before are now considering it as a career investment.

It’s clearly a recognition of the growing importance of appearance in workplace success today.

It’s hardly surprising that the latest non-surgical treatments like Botox and wrinkle fillers are proving so popular, they are incredibly effective at erasing those offending lines that make us look old and tired. But only if the right treatment is used and used correctly. The treatments aren’t cheap and there are a lot of doctors and nurses jumping on the bandwagon to make money from offering them.

So it’s crucial to stay informed to get a good result and to stay safe. If you are considering ‘investing’ in your appearance, make sure it’s a well informed investment, or your choice could cost you dear, in more ways than one.

Victoria Taylor is an independent investigative journalist who has interviewed doctors, beauticians and surgeons to write “Secrets to Looking Younger” the ultimate guide to the best treatments and safest practitioners to make you look younger.

Waxing Pain — Tips for Withstanding Waxing Discomfort

November 6th, 2007

First, the bad news: waxing hurts. Think of it as having a large Band-Aid ripped off. How much it hurts is largely attributable to an individual’s pain threshold. But, any way you slice it, pulling hairs out from the follicle smarts.

The good news is there are a lot of things you can do to minimize waxing discomfort.

The most important step is to find an experienced, well-trained waxer. A gifted professional will make the procedure as quick and painless as possible. They’ll know tricks to keep you comfortable. If they do a lot of waxing they’re also more likely to use better, more expensive products like Bombshell Wax which includes essential oils and buffering ingredients to make waxing faster, easier, safer and more comfortable. Seek referrals from friends who wax as this is no time to let your fingers do the walking in the Yellow Pages.

Now that you’ve found a reputable waxer and have made an appointment there are a few things you can and should do beforehand. Avoid caffeine, nicotine and sugar for at least two hours prior to treatment as these will increase your sensitivity. Consider taking aspirin, Tylenol, Advil or some other over-the-counter analgesic. Relax and reduce any sources of stress in your life. Try to schedule treatment when you’re most likely to be relaxed. Give yourself time to get to your appointment. Some people find a pre-wax glass of wine or a cocktail helps them to relax and dulls the pain.

When you’re in the room with your waxer communicate any fears or anxieties. Talking through the procedure often helps. Wear loose clothing and take off anything constricting or remotely discomfiting. Ask for a fan if it’s stuffy or hot. Ask for more heat if it’s chilly.

Now that you’re ready to be waxed make sure your waxer applies pressure to or rubs the area that has just been waxed. A good waxer will know this without being told. In addition, there are lots of things you can do to take your mind away from any pain or discomfort your body might be experiencing. Nothing works for everybody but you might experiment with one or more of these techniques:

*Hold a towel or stuffed animal to squeeze

*Suck on mints or hard candy or chew gum

*Focus on why you’re there and the end result of your efforts

*Use breathing and visualization (think Lamaze) strategies to disassociate yourself from the procedure and any discomfort

*Bring a friend for support and distracting chit chat

*Arrange for a foot massage or reflexology during treatment

Remember, the first waxing is always the most difficult. Consistent waxing of a body area will reduce the amount of hair that grows in that spot and will make remaining hairs easier to remove. Subsequent waxings will get progressively easier and less painful.
