Confidence is King of the Road

September 30th, 2007

Confidence is more than just sexy. It can save you a ton of money on your next car or truck.

Lots of people hate buying cars. When you get right down to it, the root causes of this fear and loathing aren’t hard to pin down.

1) Fear of the unknown.
2) Buying a car is a confrontational situation.
3) It’s a huge commitment of time and money.

Well, okay, that’s great, but how does that help you? Patience, grasshopper.

While there’s no magical silver bullet to cure all of the above ills, a little confidence can go a long way. If you act uncertain and unsure, chances are you will get taken for a ride. This applies to every step of the process, not just when you’re checking out cars on the showroom floor.

So what do you do? I mean, great, be confident. But what does that mean?

Be decisive. Know exactly what kind of car you want and exactly what you want to pay. Do your homework first and research everything you can find. The Internet is the most powerful research tool ever devised by man. Use it.

Show, don’t tell. Print copies of everything you find. Don’t just tell a dealer that you got a better price quote online. Show them. Don’t just say that you thought your credit was good enough to qualify for a better rate. Show them.

Know thyself. Not everyone handles every situation well. If you know you’re going to have a hard time negotiating and haggling over the price (which you will) then find someone who can. Even if you don’t have a friend or loved one skilled in the art of car buying, you can usually find car buying services listed in the Yellow Pages major cities than can help you out for a small fee.

A little confidence goes a long, long way.

Flood Damage Cars Are Still Around

September 20th, 2007

While the news reports concerning hurricanes, flood damages and
the travesty that was put upon the unfortunate victims have
slowed down, the dangers and hazards are still present.

With reports varying upwards of 600,000 vehicles damaged by
floodwaters, these cars and trucks will most certainly, and
already have, surfaced across the country, waiting on their next
victim.

It’s easy to let your guard down with out much media publicity,
but used car buyers should be aware that these vehicles are
still out in the market, perhaps cross country in states that
are not affected by the floods.

A couple of common issues that have surfaced, that you should be
aware of, is sellers attempting to hide the origin of where
these cars came from. By registering the vehicle in different
states, it creates a paper trail that can be difficult to trace
unless you spend the time for researching.

Another common issue is sellers changing license plate frames or
adding an emblem from another state. This of course is designed
to hide or deceive the potential buyer of what state the car
came from.

The question remains, what steps should a consumer take to
minimize their risk of purchasing one of these damaged vehicles?
The below tips, ideas and suggestions will at least minimize
your risk of purchasing a car or truck that has been involved
with floodwaters.

Check the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s web site at HREF="http://www.nicb.org" rel="nofollow">www.nicb.org, they have compiled
a list of vehicles that have that have been affected by
hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. While this list may not
include every single vehicle, it’s a good place to start with.

Also run an online history report, once again, this database may
not be all-inclusive, but it’s another step in the process of
elimination.

Knowledge Is King, and it can’t have more meaning than in your
quest for a quality used automobile. Following the below
inspection tips will offer some added protection as well, and
perhaps is the most effective means of determining in the
vehicle was involved in floods.

·Inspect for grass and debris around the radiator, underneath
around the frame, front and rear suspension components, etc.

·Check for standing waterlines in the engine compartment, rear
firewall area, and even inside door pockets of the door panels
and interior trim areas.

·Mildew smell inside due to wet carpeting and padding indicate
the possibility water intrusions.

·Inspect connectors and wiring for signs of corrosion,
physically disconnect a few connectors and inspect the
terminals. Corrosion evidence will be a green or white chalk
type substance or rust color.

·Look for rusted bolts and metal components, particularly
underneath seats where water has been standing.

·Inspect for windows fogging up on the inside after the vehicle
has sat overnight, this is an indication that there may be water
underneath the carpet and or carpet padding.

·Inspect trunk area for waterlines, corroded connectors and
wiring. With a keen eye and a little knowledge you can minimize
the risk of spending thousands of dollars on a vehicle that has
potential long-term effects by water damage.

10 Good Reasons for Taking Driving Lessons. A Guide for the Irish Learner Driver

September 16th, 2007

In a driving context, most of the decisions that you take and the techniques that you employ, will have both an economic and a safety impact. The decision to take driving lessons is really a simple one but one that will have far reaching consequences well into the future. Most, if not all, poor or dangerous habits in today’s drivers stem from the lack of professional tuition at the outset. In this second in a series of articles designed to assist today’s learner drivers we will have a look at the benefits in taking Professional Tuition.

1. Taking lessons will greatly improve your chances of staying safe and accident free since providing you retain what you have been taught, you will be probably better than many motorists who have been driving for considerably longer. Lack of sufficient training, or even no training at all which is common in Ireland, will inevitably lead to accidents at a very early stage in the driving career. Accidents are to be avoided at all costs. After all isn’t the safety of the driver, the passengers and other road users the paramount priority?

2. A course of lessons at the start of your driving career and not one month from your Driving Test, will give you the confidence you need to continue the learning process, and will form the foundation for safe motoring.

3. Taking a course of lessons will give you the chance to be accepted by an insurance company for your first Insurance policy. In fact most companies will insist on a minimum number of lessons completed by a recognised school, before a son or daughter will be admitted onto a Parent’s policy.

4. On a very topical note, the Irish Insurer Hibernian, in conjunction with the Institute of Advanced Motorists, has extended its successful Ignition scheme to provisional license holders since January 2005.Learner drivers that pass the one hour driving assessment, will be offered a 21% reduction on their insurance. This is a substantial reduction for any new driver, particularly young males under 25 years of age, and well worth achieving. Just being in the possession of a provisional license will not suffice to pass this test. A course of lessons will be needed in order to achieve the required standard and the test should not be booked until quite a high level of both competence and confidence has been reached.

5. Passing the Department of Transport Driving Test, sooner rather than later, will result in further reductions in already high Insurance costs. Lessons taken just before the Driving Test will not cut it in today’s Test environment; there is just too much to learn if one wants to be successful first time out.

6. The long waiting list for the Irish Driving Test is a great inconvenience for many learner Drivers and also their Driving Instructors. The long wait is accentuated by the huge numbers of learners who do not prepare adequately with a professional school and then are forced to re sit their Test sometimes several times over. Career aspirations can easily be affected if the journey to a full License is overly prolonged.

7. Obtaining a full driving license promptly will speed up the reduction in your insurance premiums via your annual no claims bonus, providing of course you are not involved in any accidents.

8. As a fully licensed Driver you will have much greater opportunity to shop around for a competitive insurance quote, since there are only a very few companies who will insure provisional license holders and then only at a huge premium.

9. As an addition to item number 4 as a fully licensed Driver, you may apply for the more advanced Hibernian Ignition course, providing you are in your first five years of driving .This is a full day course, the cost of which can be recouped, if you pass the practical driving assessment at the end of the day. The reduction in insurance premium for the successful candidate can be upwards of 30%, so again very worthwhile .Drivers in this category should take a refresher course with a driving school to ensure that any bad habits or techniques are eradicated. Once again it is worth pointing out that the length of your driving experience is not a guarantee of success unless you started on the right foot to begin with!

10. If, in the early days of your working life you are unlucky enough to find yourself jobless through either, takeovers, cutbacks or closures, a full Driving License will enable you to pick up an interim job very quickly while you regroup and examine your future options. There is a shortage of drivers to fill current vacancies in Europe, particularly in the commercial sector so there are great opportunities for young qualified drivers who have been well trained.

Both career and promotional opportunities abound for the fully licensed driver in any organisation. Faced with two candidates of similar qualifications, an employer will naturally favour the person with the full license pretty much every time.

Car Clubs Offer Excellent Tips and Deals

September 14th, 2007

Whether you own the car of your dreams or you simply dream about owning the car of your dreams, joining a car club related to that particular car is a must. We have found that car clubs are a great way to network, meet others with similar interests and to get deals on cars and accessories.

Many people think that car clubs are simply for those people who want or have a tricked out ride with all the chrome their car can hold. This is definitely not true. From searching car clubs and information about car clubs, we found clubs available for anything from lowriders, monster trucks and motorcycles to luxury and high end vehicles. It seems that car clubs carry a stigma to be more for teenagers dreaming of owning a tricked out ride whereas they are really for anyone of any age who has a love of cars.

What do you get when you join a car club? This varies from club to club, but we have found a few things that are more prevelant. Many of the clubs have a monthly newsletter that will notify you of new products and accessories, cars for sale and upcoming car events. There is also gear that you can buy related to that car including t-shirts, hats, key chains, travel mugs and water bottles. You typically get a discount on these items if you belong to these clubs. If the club has a website, you can join the forum to share information about things you have done to your car as well as solicit advice from others.

If you are a car collector or are planning to purchase a car, car clubs can also help you find good deals. We know of one man who is a member of the S2000 club. After graduating from college, he decided to downsize in cars for a couple of years. Now that he owns his own business, he wanted to purchase another S2000. Through people he met at the car club he was able to find an awesome deal on a used one.

Car club memberships also make great gifts for the people we know who have everything. We have done this for a father-in-law who just purchased a Mini Cooper and a cousin who is into Lowriders. They both loved the gift and enjoy getting the newsletters and buying car gear for themselves.

So, whether you are driving a luxury car or cruising in your tricked out Honda, there is a car club just waiting for you. You can join for a small fee, but the perks, discounts and networking make it all well worth it. If, on the off chance, you can’t find a car club that fits your needs, consider starting your own. Chances are there are others out there who would love to join the club and swap car tips and information with each other.

Getting That Toyota Radiator Fix

September 11th, 2007

Getting That Toyota Radiator Fix

Toyota is one of today’s top quality car manufacturers in the
world. What first started out as a spin-off of Toyoda Automatic
Loom Works, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of weaving
machinery in the 1930s, Toyota Motor Corporation Ltd. now
produces more than 5.5 million vehicles per year or the
equivalent of one vehicle to every six seconds - making it
Japan’s largest car builder and the world’s third largest
manufacturer of automobiles in unit sales and in net sales.

After six decades in the car manufacturing business, Toyota
continues to be one of the most admired, most popular and most
dependable car makers in the world. Providing a complete line of
powerful, innovatively designed vehicle models ranging from
mini-vehicles to small cars all the way up to the large and
heavy-duty trucks, it compliments these excellent vehicles with
top of the line car parts, including what is considered the
heart of the vehicle cooling system, the radiator.

The car radiator is a technology that has been around almost
since automobiles were first invented. Its primary purpose is
heat dissipation - to keep our vehicles running smoothly by
maintaining the engine’s ideal temperature thus, preventing
overheating.

Like any other car radiator, the Toyota Radiator works as a
heat exchanger used to cool an engine once it reaches operating
temperatures. It does this through convection, a process through
which heat is transferred during the automatic circulation of
fluid. Without an efficient cooling system, your Toyota car is
bound to overheat and to perform poorly. The engine should be
kept in tip-top shape and the car running smoothly by always
properly checking and maintaining your Toyota radiator.

While originally radiators were made of round copper or brass
tubes that were significantly heavy yet were corrosion and
heat-resistant, today’s car radiators are lighter and
aluminum-made. This often makes radiators prone to leaks,
especially when not properly taken cared of. Damage to the
cooling core of the car radiator, split or broken radiator hose,
cracked or broken radiator housing, and/or a small leak running
your car’s radiator dry are the most common causes for radiator
failure.

Usually, your Toyota Radiator problem can
be easily solved with just a phone call, a click of the mouse,
or a short walk or run to the nearby repair shop. But what do
you do when get caught in the middle of nowhere with steam
billowing from the open hood of your car and no help in sight?

Here are some simple survival tips: 1. If it’s a damaged core,
improvise repair by removing the radiator first, and then by
finding the broken section. A pair of pliers will come in handy
to crimp or fold the sections of the core surrounding the
damage. If you have quick-set epoxy or muffler cement, patch the
leaks after allowing the damaged section to dry thoroughly. If
you stem the leak enough without disabling your Toyota radiator,
you can get yourself to a service station. 2. If a coolant hose
is simply split, repair it with whatever heat resistant,
waterproof material you have in your car. Duct tape will work if
wrapped tight enough (electrical tape will not work). No duct
tape? Resourceful drivers have used a glue stick, a potato chip
bag, even a necktie, to patch things up. A broken hose will cost
you more trouble though. You will have to find something that
can bridge the break and that fits snugly inside the hose. A
film can is usually just about the right size, and if you’re
lucky to have one stashed in your bag or in your glove
compartment, you can insert the improvised tube, push the hose
back together, fasten it together as firmly as you can and head
to the nearest service shop you can find. 3. One radiator
problem you might not want to experience is a crack or break in
the car radiator’s housing. This is a major problem and often
there is no way to repair it. The emergency fix is pretty much
the same as for a split hose: try to wrap anything waterproof
around it that can withstand some pressure. You may find
yourself bending or displacing some cores, but that’s okay as
long as they do not split. 4. An empty tank is one of the
easiest radiator problems to fix. A slow leak means that you
just have to keep topping up the fluid level until you can get
the car radiator repaired. Water will do the trick if you don’t
have any coolant. However, as often as it’s been said,
prevention is still better than cure. To reduce your chances of
getting radiator problems, proper maintenance and care of your
Toyota radiator is a must. Regularly clean and clear the
blockages to make sure that your Toyota radiator is free from
leaks. This is the most efficient way for your Toyota radiator
to last you a longer period of time, and to save you the trouble
of spending your hard-earned money in what could have been
unnecessary repairs and replacements.

Lincoln’s Version of Luxury

September 7th, 2007

The Lincoln Continental is a vehicle that is crafted and
manufactured by the Lincoln brand of the Ford Motor Company in
the United States. This is a line of luxury cars, and for most
of its lifetime, the name, Lincoln Continental, has often been
used in reference to the Lincoln flagship that displayed four
doors. This vehicle was initially developed as Edsel Ford’s
personal vehicle. This vehicle has often been rated as one of
the most beautiful vehicles ever crafted the world over.

This vehicle has been substantially updated in the middle of the
1990s decade. It received more rounded lines thus exuding a more
aerodynamic exterior. For 1995, it reigned and received a
reputation as a unique Lincoln vehicle and was recognized as a
luxury car. Its V6 engine was replaced through the addition and
use of the same DOHC Modular V8 that was installed at the rear
of this vehicle. Constant updates were made and in 1998, it
displayed a new exterior. After a year, side airbags were put in
place and the vehicle gained more power. The last of the Lincoln
Continental kind was manufactured in 2002 and was replaced by
the Lincoln Zephyr.

For the last set of changes, the Lincoln Continental delivers
comfort with its fullness that is packed with technology, and
computer electronics that are applied to it. This has allowed
drivers to tailor suspension dampening and steering effort so as
to suit their own personal taste and style in driving. It costs
lesser than the Cadillac and the Lexus luxury sedans and could
consider the Buick Park Avenue as its competitor. For the last
year that it was crafted, it came with the standard features
like leather upholstery, self-leveling rear suspension,
anti-lock brakes, traction control, side impact air bags, dual
front air bags, and a memory system for the driver’s seat and
mirrors. It held a 4.6 liter V8 engine that powers the front
wheels with a four-speed automatic transmission. What was given
as an option is a Vehicle Communication package that includes a
hands-free voice-activated, digital/analog Motorola Timeport
phone, however this requires a Sprint PCS plan. It has
voice-activated news, weather, sports, and stock quotes. With
the Safety and Security Services, or SOS, button, it can summon
emergency roadside assistance and it also activates
automatically if the air bags are deployed.

The Lincoln Continental sports the Lincoln waterfall grille that
blends neatly with the headlamp clusters. It also has a brightly
trimmed front end with massive tail lamps that seem to wrap
around the muscular rear quarters. The front fenders, hood, and
deck lid has been specifically made with a sheet-molding
compound that is very resistant to dents and damages. Overall,
it exudes a round, organic, yet solid and impressive impression.

Lincoln Continental owners and Lincoln owners need not worry
about their Lincoln
Continental parts
and auto parts like engine parts,
hoods, mirrors, and wheels, for these have been made available
on the internet with
Lincoln Parts and Car Parts online store.

Automotive Detailing: How to Clean Automotive Upholstery

September 6th, 2007

Maintaining or restoring the “looks-like-new” condition of their automobiles is a consuming interest for most car owners. Most owners are interested in preserving their investment, and in enjoying the full use of their vehicle as long as possible. Other owners are interested in restoring a vehicle to the best condition possible in order to sell it or get a good trade-in value. Still others are attempting to restore a vehicle as a hobby, joining the many proud owners of classic and antique vehicles. These consumers want quality automotive cleaning products that will enable them to refurbish their autos quickly, with as little effort as possible. One particular problem, especially with older vehicles, is how to clean automotive upholstery. Is it different from furniture upholstery? Can the upholstery be cleaned in place or must it be removed? Is it necessary to use products that are uniquely for these interior automotive fabrics?

Even new vehicles can become soiled. A misplaced cup of coffee, a forgotten and melted crayon, a wad of gum tracked into the car on the driver’s shoe, or a sick puppy can present a daunting cleaning problem. If the problem was neglected when it was fresh, or if it was only partially cleaned and then allowed to age with the car, it may be extremely difficult to remove. It is always best to deal with stains immediately.

By and large, the same product that will clean a leather or vinyl chair should work on a leather or vinyl car interior. Automotive carpeting should respond to the same techniques as household carpet, depending on the fibers used. The same can be said for fabric upholstery. Therefore, the first step in cleaning your car’s interior is to determine what it is made of.

Second, try to determine what may have created the stain. This step may be difficult if the stain has been there for a while or if you have just acquired the car. Spilled cola and grease may leave stains that are similar in color, but they would respond best to different types of spot removers. It is important to choose the correct automotive cleaning products for the job or stain.

Unusual stains should be dealt with first, before an attempt is made to clean and refresh the entire interior surface. Gum or other, similar, sticky substances need careful handling. There are products available now that will freeze them in place, changing their chemical composition, and thus allowing for easy removal by scraping them away.

Other messes, like the above mentioned crayon, also need special handling. Crayon is wax based, but also has pigment. Its removal may need two steps and two entirely different products, depending on how badly it has melted into the fabric. A product specially formulated for crayon removal is a good first step.
Sugar-based food and drink spills on fabric, even old ones, can be removed with a good spot remover. This step should be followed by a thorough steam cleaning. If these stains are on the stitching of vinyl or leather, they may respond to the spot cleaner alone. Grease-based stains should respond to being blotted with a good degreaser, such as Formula 21 Grease Stain Remover.

Once all the unique stains have been dealt with appropriately, give the interior a thorough, all-over cleaning, depending on the upholstery type. Leather and vinyl can be cleaned with a specially formulated product such as Fuller Vinyl and Leather Cleaner. Built-up grime on older seats may also respond to washing with a good degreasing product such as Fulsol All-Purpose Degreaser. Fabric seats and carpets should be able to handle a thorough steam cleaning. Care should be taken to not get the fabric too wet. Because the upholstery and carpet cannot be removed to dry, work slowly in small areas, and only dampen the surface enough to remove the soil. Leaving the doors and or windows open for a while after the cleaning is complete may also hasten the trying time. Check with the manufacturer before treating or steam-cleaning antique fabrics.

With a little pre-planning and care, and with the right automotive detailing products, you can become an expert in how to clean automotive upholstery.

Hybrid Car Models: Are They Worth It?

August 30th, 2007

With gas prices going out of the roof, it is no wonder people are looking toward hybrid cars for their saving grace. Hybrids have been on the market for years and are extremely popular in California and other eco-aware states. However, the average person likely knows very little about hybrid cars, trucks, and SUVs.

The biggest reason most people have bought hybrid car models in the past is because they are so much better for the environment. In fact, they let off much fewer pollutants than the average vehicle. With global warming being a big issue, those who are environmentally concerned are turning to hybrids for part of the answer to the problem.
A bigger reason people today are drawn to hybrid car models however is because they really do get better gas mileage. Since they run partially on electric battery, they burn less fuel both in the city and on the highway. In fact, they can get about 11 mpg more than a traditional identical model of the same car. So, as the world is not likely to see a break in gas prices anytime soon, the hybrid car models are looking better and better each day.

If you are interested in learning more about hybrid car models, hop on the Internet and start researching different models. Almost every major car manufacturer is offering several hybrid models, with more expected to be on the market in the next few years. You can even find big trucks and SUVs made as hybrid car models, so there is literally something for everyone.

Truck Tonneau Covers Shield More Than You Would Think

August 29th, 2007

If you’ve got a truck, adding a tonneau cover to your bed is an absolute must. Not only are tonneaus useful in any situation, they provide loads of essential benefits, including:

• Organized storage for whatever you’re hauling in your truck bed, plus the bonus of keeping a lid on loose items

• Coverage from potentially damaging weather conditions, like rain, snow and extreme sun

• Complete coverage of your payload that keeps your cargo out of sight from potential theft

• An immediate improvement in gas mileage with tight, aerodynamic materials covering your otherwise drag-prone open bed

• Sleek looks that range from smooth leather grain patterns to ultra-custom color matched style

Tonneau Cover Storage Basics

You haul everything from hardware to the occasional load of groceries in the back of your truck. A tonneau cover helps keep a lid on all of it, shielding your cargo from the blowing winds of freeway driving and all kinds of pounding wet weather. It’s an easy way to make sure nothing disappears from your bed while you’re driving or parked.

A guide to protecting your gear from the weather with a tonneau cover

Even simple cover over your gear can help prevent weather damage. Tonneau covers take protection a few steps further though, with some ingenious design features. For instance, most tonneau covers employ strategically-placed weather seals that channel water away from your cargo. And, many models use raised and arched support bows to encourage moisture runoff. While no bed cover is completely water-tight, most will do an outstanding job of keeping your gear high and dry in nasty weather.

Tonneau Security: A Quick Reference

When your cargo is out of sight, it’s out of a would-be thief’s mind. Tonneau covers make the contents of your truck bed a mystery, giving you confidence that your belongings will be right where you left them.

Beyond simple coverage, tonneau covers offer higher levels of security, depending on the model. Most hinged (lift-up) tonneau covers can be fully-secured using a locking tailgate. Hard top and retractable tonneaus generally have secure key locking systems that latch closed at the tailgate.

With a variety of security measures, a good tonneau cover makes your truck bed far more versatile than ever before — ideal for use as a hauler or hiding spot.

Gas Mileage and Tonneau Covers: The Basics

Trucks are getting taller, engines are bigger, payloads are getting deeper and the traffic is thicker than ever. You can probably hear big oil companies laughing with their fistfuls of cash every time the pump takes a big bite from your spending money. A tonneau cover helps you even the score in one of the only ways you can - by prolonging your next trip to the service station.

Open truck beds can be a huge drag on your gas mileage. As air flows over the aerodynamic front end of your vehicle, it can swirl into your bed and catch on your tailgate — stealing several miles off your latest tank.

Covering your truck bed with a tight tonneau cover — even a soft model — stops the tailgate drag. Air hits the taut surface of a hard or soft tonneau cover and continues past your vehicle with nothing to catch. And, it saves you mileage without crazy tailgate removal or potentially damaging open-gate driving.

How much savings? A 5% improvement in fuel economy is the industry-wide accepted number, though up to 10% is possible. Your vehicle could see bigger or smaller effects. Still, the idea is simple: a tonneau cover will save gas and eventually pay for itself.

Great tonneau cover looks: a quick guide

A smooth tonneau cover adds custom truck style to bland uncovered truck beds. Each tonneau cover we offer sports a custom fit to the dimensions of your specific year, make and model. The result is a special fit and exact appearance that was made for your truck.

Tonneau covers can add any level of extra smart appearance to your truck. Soft tonneau covers stretch tight, not just for improved mileage but also for style. With a variety of lid materials, retractable tonneau covers are the kings of the low-profile smooth factor. Hard top tonneau covers are the ultimate in custom looks: molded-over edges, seamless fitting and optional paint matching.

A Guide to the History of Tonneau Covers

Tonneau covers (also known as truck bed covers, bed lids or truck lids) have evolved from a number of versions designed for a variety of uses. Because many crude bed cover designs existed over the years, no one person or company can lay claim as the originator of the tonneau cover.

Soft covers gained prominence while playing an important roll on major speedways. Top-class sport truck racers used these flexible bed covers as a lightweight way to improve their aerodynamics and reduce drag. These racetrack tonneau covers sat flush with the top of the bed and employed the same heavy-duty materials used in today’s soft covers.

Hard top tonneau covers grew in popularity as an alternative to full-size camper shells. These highly-customized truck bed lids, most commonly made from fiberglass, have evolved into tonneaus using a variety of materials and opening mechanisms.

With every vehicle and every lifestyle kept in mind, Andrew Bernhardt hopes that this information will help you find the right tonneau cover to customize your pickup truck. For more information about soft roll up tonneau covers and more to upgrade your vehicle, please visit AutoAnything.com.

Tax Deductions On Car Donation Explained

August 27th, 2007

Any donation you make to help out a worthy cause can also help you with your taxes. If you have an old car parked in your garage and you don’t know what to do with it, car donation is a wonderful way to help a charity. Although the car donation laws have changed, this is still a good way to help yourself and others too.

In 2005, the laws changed regarding tax deductions on boats, vehicles or airplanes that are valued over $500. Now, the charity must provide written documentation or acknowledgement within the 30 days of processing your donation. If the charity gives an exaggerated or false statement, they can be fined or penalized.

Under the January 2005 rules, your tax break is based on how the charity uses the donated vehicle. If the car is sold, the gross sale price can be deducted. If the charity uses the donated car following the new law for “significant” charity work that is tax approved, you’ll be able to deduct the market value of the vehicle. However, some stiff penalties will be charged for falsified documents. The law is watching carefully those charities not following the rules and regulations involved with car donation.

Even though the old laws had some problems, many charities are skeptical about the new car donation laws. A lot of organizations are concerned about what might happen when the responsibility of tax deduction is put under the authority of the charity rather than the donor. Some of them have actually sent a letter to the Treasury Secretary that suggests that people may be discouraged from donating cars if they aren’t aware of the deduction amount that will be allowed. This, they fear will mean that some donors will be lost. Charities feel that donors must be able to weigh the cost of benefit in order to know if it is enough for them.

If you do decide to pursue car donation, you will find out that the process is easy. You can contact most charities by phone or online. It is important to ask the charity you wish to get involved with for some specific and important information. This is necessary in order to avoid complications and also be sure you understand the process. It’s not hard, but does require you to fill out some important information and get the car ready.
