Exercises are paired, so do a set with one exercise, then a set with the other exercise in the pair.

Pair #1

DB squat press - 3 x 8

Stand with feet shoulder width apart, hold a set of DB’s, perform a squat, on the way up, press the DB’s over your head.

Crunches - 3 x 15

Pair #2

Pull ups 3 x failure

That’s right, pull ups. If your gym has an assisted pull up machine, use that. If not, lay under a bar with feet planted on the floor and chest under bar. Pull you chest up to the bar and then lower yourself under control. This motion is the opposite of a push up.

Rotational lunges 3 x 8 each side

Hold a medicine ball or DB (about 5 - 8 pounds), perform a lunge and turn the trunk to the side you lunge with (lunge right, twist right, lunge left, twist left).

Bench Dips 3 x 12-15

Sit on a bench, put you hands on each side of your hips with fingers hanging off the edge of the bench. Slide your butt off the bench and lower yourself until your upper arm is parallel to the ground. Then return to start position. Try to keep your back straight and as close as possible to the bench. To increase difficulty, extend legs out fully or put feet on a stability ball.

Supine leg curl 3 x 10

Lay on the ground facing up and place your heels and ankles on a stability ball. Raise your butt in the air and curl the ball into your body. Then push it out.

Try this workout 2 -3 times per week. You should be able to complete it in less than 45 minutes.

Q: Help! I’m getting closer to my goal weight, but the cellulite on my butt and legs doesn’t seem to be disappearing! Is there anything I can do to get rid of this awful-looking “cottage cheese”?

A: First of all, congratulations on getting ever closer to your “bikini body.” It sounds like it won’t be too long before you reach your goal physique!

Cellulite is often referred to as “cottage cheese” or “orange peel” mainly due to its appearance, which looks like dimples or ripples just under the skin. Often “dimples” are thought of as being cute… if only the same could be said of dreaded cellulite!

Predominantly women are affected by cellulite, although a small percentage of men are too. Cellulite is a problem encountered by many womenin fact, around 90% of women suffer from it, to some degree, on their thighs and buttocks. Even “picture-perfect” women you see in movies and magazines suffer from this unsightly “cottage cheese” effect, as you may have seen from magazines such as The Globe, which seem to take great pleasure in displaying particularly unflattering photos of stars who are caught unawares.

There are basically two types of cellulite. Hard cellulite often occurs in the bodies of dancers, runners, or athletes, and this is harder to get rid of as it attaches directly to the muscle tissue. However, this cellulite is often not as visible as soft cellulite. Soft cellulite occurs in larger areas of the body and often “sags” from the body as it’s not as readily attached to the muscle.

The Cause of Cellulite?
Cellulite is a kind of fat tissue just below the surface of the skin. This layer of skin contains bands of connecting tissue that have many fat cells and is surrounded by a liquid that nourishes it and provides an effective waste system. The waste products should be removed, however, because when toxins are trapped in the skin, this connective tissue thickens and gives the dimpling effect of cellulite. This layer also thickens as we age, which can produce the rippling effect of cellulite too.

There is a difference between cellulite and fat, though, in that fat insulates the body and cushions the organs, nerves, and muscles. Cellulite, on the other hand, provides no padding and only occurs in certain areas on the body, such as the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and breasts.

Cellulite is not necessarily a factor of bodyweight. You don’t have to be overweight to have cellulite. Though diet and lifestyle affect cellulite formation, a large part of cellulite is comprised of toxins and fat that build up in the body and can affect women of any size, weight, and body structure.

Usually, cellulite can be attributed to a combination of factors and isn’t usually caused by just one. Below are the most common:

Genetics: does your mother or grandmother suffer from this condition?

Lack of exercise: by following a strength training and cardiovascular program, you’ll be able to lower your bodyfat as well as increase muscle tone, both of which can reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Diet: poor eating habits (including the excess consumption of alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods) can contribute to the formation of cellulite because the toxins they produce get trapped in the fatty tissue.

Insufficient water intake: water helps flush excess toxins from the body. Aim for at least 12 cups of water per day.

Birth control pill: this is because the body’s waste system can’t get rid of the enormous flow of estrogen in the body.

Smoking: you don’t need me to tell you the evils of smoking, but perhaps you didn’t know it can also contribute to cellulite formation. Smoking can weaken the skin due to the constriction of capillaries and damage the connective tissue that causes the dimpling effect of cellulite.

Stress: stress can cause muscles to seize up with tension while also causing the connective tissue that covers that muscle to seize up. Tension also blocks the tissue, preventing proper waste elimination and purification.

Now you know how it’s caused and what it is… But can you get rid of it?
The only surefire way of reducing the appearance of cellulite is through consistent exercise, a healthy diet, and plenty of water to flush out the toxins.

Don’t just rely on long, “slow-and-go” types of cardiovascular exercise alone to get rid of the cellulite. You’ll have to incorporate some strength training into your workouts too to increase the muscle tone and also decrease bodyfat. Many women want to reduce bodyfat but also firm up their problem areasbecoming leaner and firmerweight-training will defiantly help to re-shape your body by adding nice, lean, toned muscle tissue to the places you want to firm up.

A program that targets the lower body may be ideal for you. For instance, you could do lower body strength training twice per week but incorporate different exercises on both days.

Great exercises for glutes and thighs include:

Hamstring curls (on a machine or with a Swiss Ball)
 Step-ups onto a flat exercise bench
 Lungesyou can do a variety of lunges, such as walking lunges, stationary lunges, and split squats
 Squats (barbell or on a Smith Machine)
 Stiff-legged deadlifts (with dumbbells)
 Hyperextensions
 Aim for 15 to 20 reps on each exercise, and do three different exercises on each of your lower body days. 

With regards to diet, losing weight won’t eliminate all cellulite, so don’t try to crash diet. This will cause your body to hold onto the fat and may even worsen the appearance of the cellulite. Aim for a healthy, low-fat lifestyle that incorporates plenty of protein, complex carbohydrates, and some essential fats. And be sure to limit “saturated” fats.

Do the creams, potions, and treatments work for reducing cellulite?
Alleged “anti-cellulite” products include loofah sponges; cactus fibers; special washcloths; horsehair mitts; creams and gels to “dissolve” cellulite; supplements containing vitamins, minerals, and/or herbs; bath liquids, massagers, rubberized pants; exercise books; brushes; rollers; body wraps; and toning lotions. Many salons offer treatment with electrical muscle stimulation, vibrating machines, inflatable hip-high pressurized boots, “hormone” or “enzyme” injections, heating pads, and massage. I won’t go through all these (especially the rubberized pants!), but let’s touch on some of the more popular “solutions.”

Cellulite creams and gels form the bulk of all cellulite treatments offered.

Some of the newer “body lift” creams such as Christian Dior’s Svelte Perfect and Nivea’s Body Skin Firming Lotion are all over the women’s magazines. In fact, though, these are merely temporary solutions at best that work by plumping up the skin, giving it a sleeker appearance.

Endermologie treatments can be carried out at most day spas.

This is the first FDA-approved non-surgical cellulite treatment. This French machine kneads and massages the skin to release cellulite-forming toxins and increase circulation. Sessions run about $100 each, and it usually takes 10 to 15 sessions to see results. After that, it’s recommended you have monthly maintenance sessions. Again, it’s a temporary effect that you’d have to carry on with to continue to see results.

Body wraps are another popular treatment in day spas.

These treatments claim to be able to reduce inches off the waist, hips, thighs, and other areas of the body. Generally these facilities apply a special cream or lotion and then tightly wrap your bodyoften you’re subjected to a heated sauna in your “mummified” state! Wraps do work to reduce some inches off the body; however, it’s just temporary water weight, which is fine for a special event or night out, but it definitely doesn’t reduce bodyfat levels. Losing the fat can only be done through a combination of diet and exercise.

Herbal supplements available in health-food stores.

Supplements such as borage oil, grapeseed extract, and Ginkgo biloba are believed to improve circulation, stimulate fat metabolism, and reduce localized fat storage. These haven’t been clinically proven to work on cellulite, though, and a clinical study carried out in November 1999 on a popular herbal cellulite remedy showed no effect on cellulite or bodyfat levels. Some of the above treatments may help smooth your skin and temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite, but you’ll get much better results by doing some of the strength training aimed at your particular trouble spots and taking another look at your nutrition to see if there’s anything that can be eliminated, such as caffeine.

Don’t underestimate the health benefits of weight training. The results of overall health improvement, metabolism and body toning are tremendous. More and more people are becoming aware of the benefits and finding their way into fitness centers lining up waiting for exercise machines. Lifting weights is no longer a bodybuilder’s hobby. Men, women and young adults alike lift weights and realize the advantages.

The major benefits of a strength program include looking trimmer and more youthful as one ages; increased metabolism and weight management; reduced stress and depression; prevention of the onset of diseases such as arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.

Many people have the notion that lifting weight is only for athletes or people who want to look good at the beach. But, what about the person who would like to pick up a 25 pound bag of dog food or the grandparent who would like to be able to carry his or her grandchild?

One of the greatest myths of weight training is the fear of bulking up or developing large, masculine-looking muscles. Muscles don’t just happen. It’s incredibly difficult for men who want to develop large muscles to do so, let alone for women who have 1/10th the testosterone of a man. If, by exercising hard, a woman develops some muscle size, it will be minimal and will improve her figure. The key to getting stronger is intensity and quality, not quantity. The idea is to break down the muscle fibers so they can rebuild. When muscle rebuilds, it becomes stronger and firmer. Rest the muscles for 24 – 48 hours after a workout is important for the rebuilding process. Eating protein within one hour after working out is the building block to muscle repair.

Be careful that safety is used in weight training so injury does not occur. Start slowly, but with progression. Proper form and technique is essential for safety as well.

Too many people stay stuck at a lower resistance when they could be lifting heavier weight and enjoying more benefits. A good question for a person to ask is, “Could I have lifted more weight, and could I have done it with good form?” On an intensity scale of one to ten, a beginner should be at a five. A seasoned weight trainer should be able to reach an eight and sometimes a ten. A ten is to failure. You won’t reach failure on every workout, but you should try to be comfortable to eventually get to a level ten. Don’t compromise form.

Cardio Workouts or Weight Training - Which Is Best?

At some point in your exercise life, you’ll ask yourself whether you should be focusing more on a cardio-only program, or a weights-only program. Most likely this will be when you hit a plateau in one of them, and feel that the time could be spent in the other type of exercise.

Does it really matter if you only do one type?

Yes, it does.

Let’s take a look at the aims of the two types of exercise:

Cardio Workouts

Cardiovascular exercise mainly aims to develop and strengthen the cardiovascular system (which supplies your body with oxygen) through aerobic training. This means improving the ability of your heart, lungs, and blood vessels to do their job, working together more efficiently.

By improving your aerobic capacity, you increase the efficacy of your cardiovascular system. And research has shown, over and over again, the people who maintain a high level of fitness throughout their life have fuller, more productive lives as they get older. Plus.. they also live longer than non-exercisers.

We could be here all day listing the benefits of cardio exercise: lower blood pressure, lower ‘bad’ cholesterol and higher ‘good’, lower incidence of heart attack and stroke, lower risk of osteoporosis, overall decreased risk of most cancers, increased life span, and much much more.

Weight Training:

As you are aware, weight training strengthens the muscles, and by increasing our muscular strength, your body becomes more able to deal with everyday life, by being stronger, more agile, more flexible, and more able to recover from injuries.

Research has shown that people who do some weight training have many of the same benefits as people who do cardiovascular exercise. Weight training also decreases risk of bone fractures, as the weights help to build bone as well as muscle.

So Which Is Best?

As with many of these “either/or” discussions, the best thing to do is to combine both approaches. By having an exercise routine that uses both components, all aspects of your body will be enhanced and developed to make the most of what you are capable of. Cardio workouts strengthen the lungs and increase stamina. Increased stamina allows you to work longer on weight training. Increase muscle mass from weight training provides better support for your skeleton. A stronger skeleton and better aerobic capacity means that you can go on to do more exercise, and so it continues.
